23.01.2022 #WeedsWednesday Serrated tussock Serrated tussock is a perennial, drought resistant, highly invasive grass. It is highly adapted to a range of environments, see...ds prolifically and is difficult and costly to control. Serrated tussock can infest agricultural land ranging from highly arable and fertile areas through to steep and non-arable areas with low fertility. Serrated tussock seeds are also a serious contaminant of hay and grain. Farm machinery such as slashers, vehicles and tractors can readily transport seed to clean areas. For control measures, visit: http://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/Details/123

17.01.2022 August mid-month National Climate Outlook A drier than average September is more likely across much of the eastern half of mainland Australia, the south-west of... WA and the Northern Territory, with parts of the south-east having a greater than 80 per cent chance of a drier than average month. For the remainder of the country there are roughly equal chances of a wetter or drier than average September. The rainfall outlook for spring 2018 indicates that a drier than average three months is more likely for southern inland NSW, VIC, parts of central QLD, southern SA, south-west WA and TAS. There is no strong tendency towards either wetter or drier than average conditions for much of remainder of the country. The temperature outlook for September to November 2018 indicates that daytime temperatures are more likely to be warmer than average for Australia. Similarly, night-time temperatures are also likely to be warmer than average for most areas, except for parts of northern Australia and the southeast of the mainland. 12.01.2022 I thought I would also use this graphical example of how severe and critical the drought is across vast areas of Australia. I dont think I have ever seen it t...his bad, at this time of year before in my 20 years of covering weather in some form. This charts is called the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (showing the anomalies in June) and is an indicator of whether something is containing live green vegetation or not. I dont think there is anything more that needs to be said, its tough out there and little hope really on the horizon But for those in the big cities who have the ability to turn taps on, this drought will affect you too, with water restrictions possible, definitely increase in the cost of fresh produce and meat supplies if there is no rain in the coming few months/year. Fingers crossed that things change soon

08.01.2022 The SKN webpage has been updated to include a list of Iconic Publications - papers that were game changers for the professional development and understanding of... soils amongst our members. We hope you find some new insights here too. "Holmes, Arthur (1965). Principles of Physical Geology. Second Edition. Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd, Melbourne. Comment: On reading this, it was like a light going on for explaining the distribution of soils in Central West NSW. It provided a logical basis for understanding the distribution of soils in Central West NSW. It explained that lithology was insufficient to explain soil distributions, it was also necessary to know about the palaeogeography and origins of the rock materials. It also brought into question the practice of simply using lithology alone to predict soil distribution which gained some currency in the late 1990s." http://www.nswskn.com/iconic-publications/

08.01.2022 A good, quick, cheap test for protein in the soil could also be used as a test for available nitrogen. The process measures a protein known as glomalin. Glomali...n is generally believed to be produced by a common soil microorganism that has a beneficial relationship with plant roots. The tongue-twisting name for this organism is arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. See more

07.01.2022 Study shows that fertilizer throws communities of microbes on leaves off-balance. Implications for food plants are massive, as weve really domesticated the he...ll out of our food. To this end, the microbiomes story comes full circle in agriculture. Where to next? One thing resonates with me, we dont need to be dosing our plants with an army of probiotics, less is more.
