25.01.2022 Bushfires can create their own weather, generating ‘pyrocumulonimbus’ clouds and storms. These clouds can cause dangerous and unpredictable changes in fire behaviour, making the fire more difficult and hazardous to fight. So, how do they form?... 1. A plume of hot, turbulent air and smoke rises. 2. Turbulence mixes cooler air into the plume, causing it to broaden and cool as it rises. 3. When the plume rises high enough, low atmospheric pressure causes its air to cool and cloud to form. 4. In an unstable atmosphere a thunderstorm can develop: pyrocumulonimbus cloud. 5. Rain in the cloud evaporates and cools when it comes into contact with dry air, producing a downburst. 6. Lightning may be produced and can ignite new fires. Find out more, including how our scientists are working to be able to predict them, in our blog: http://ow.ly/3t1i50x8nM6 For the latest fire weather warnings see http://ow.ly/tbTN50x8nz8, and follow advice from emergency services NSW Rural Fire Service Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES ABC Emergency

23.01.2022 Will Your Heating Be Safe This Winter CHECK YOUR HEATERS TO AVOID FIRE RISK As the cooler weather approaches, here are some precautions that you can take to pr...event the potential for your heating to cause a fire. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and reduce the risk of fire, make sure you have your gas heater serviced by a professional at least every 2 years. Make sure your wood fired heating is free of build-up and obstructions and have you chimney cleaned annually. ALWAYS make sure you turn heaters off before leaving home or going to bed and never leave portable heaters unattended. Interconnected smoke alarms, located in all living and sleeping areas of the home, can save lives in the event of a fire. https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/fires-in-the-home See more

Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Stay indoors and away from windows. * If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Despite responding to all 000 calls as usual, you might notice that we will be less active around town going forward as we will no longer be: - Training on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, - Conducting meetings,... - Participating in ceremonies, - Undertaking community education, and - Opening up the fire station for school or Scout Groups (which we will miss the most). Until this all passes we will continue to be there when you need us!

12.01.2022 POSTPONED - WALKING OFF THE WAR WITHIN Sadly tomorrow's event has been postponed Here is some information that they have just posted... It is with disappointment that we are announcing the cancellation of tomorrow’s Walking Off The War Within (WOTWW) event in Mildura. As a result of advice given today from the Australian Chief Medical Officer - that events and gatherings of more than 500 people should be cancelled the team has decided to cancel tomorrow’s event with the view of holding it in the future when we are in a position to do so. Currently, Mildura has 800+ people registered and over 100 supporters and spectators attending the day. We are thrilled with these numbers and support however fit into the category that the Government is making decisions about.
