12.01.2022 Another long one but I wanted to update you on the latest from last night's meeting of the National Cabinet. You might have seen the Prime Minister announce s...ome of these changes this morning, but I'll run through them quickly again. For the first time in Australian history, DFAT has upgraded its travel advice to a level four for the entire world. This effectively means a ban on international travel for Australian citizens and a warning to return home if you're currently overseas. It's only going to get harder to travel and re-enter Australia, and we don't want anyone getting stuck. Non-essential indoor gatherings must be capped at 100 people. This will apply to venues such as pubs, restaurants and cinemas, as well as private functions, weddings and parties. That's in addition to the existing ban on non-essential outdoor gatherings of more than 500 people. A lot of venues have already been proactive, and we are very grateful for their quick thinking and action. I trust that people will do the right thing and adhere to this advice for everyone's sake. But if we have to enforce these measures, we will. Under the State of Emergency declared on Monday, venues that fail to comply with these new directions face fines of up to $100,000. People who don't comply face fines of up to $20,000. I sincerely hope that we don't have to issue a single penalty. But we need people to take this seriously. We've also had to make a tough call on Anzac Day events. We will honour the day with formalities but without crowds. From today, much stricter guidelines are being introduced at aged care facilities recognising the fact that older people are at far greater risk. Visits to aged care residents will only be allowed for a short duration and by a maximum of two people per day, except for palliative care. Responsibility for these new limitations will sit with the Commonwealth Government. Some of these changes will be inconvenient. I get it. But we wouldn't be asking you to do this if it wasn't absolutely necessary. We'll all have plenty more chances to go out and enjoy ourselves. But we don't get another chance at flattening the curve and potentially saving thousands of lives. One more thing. I know I've said it a fair bit recently, but this stockpiling and hoarding we're seeing across the state has got to stop. The major supermarkets have all assured me there is plenty for everyone but not if people are buying ten or twenty times the normal amount. Family and friends can drop off supplies if you become unwell or have to self-isolate. Neighbours, charities and delivery services are all on hand to help. No-one will be left to fend for themselves during this pandemic. No-one will go without. And no-one needs six months' worth of tinned chickpeas or pasta sitting in the cupboard. We need to fight COVID-19 not each other. Because Victorians are better than this. I know we are.
