20.01.2022 Today, Mercy Health is celebrating an exciting discovery, by researchers at Mercy Hospital for Women (and the University of Melbourne) who have identified a nov...el protein measurable in the bloodstream that could predict which expecting women are at risk of stillbirth. Stillbirth is a devastating tragedy that claims 1 in every 130 pregnancies in Australia. This means that every single day, 6-7 families lose their baby to stillbirth. Worldwide, 3 million pregnancies end in stillbirth ever year. The results of this important research were released internationally in a paper, Circulating SPINT1 is a biomarker of pregnancies with poor placental function and fetal growth restriction, published in Nature journal on 15 May. 01.01.2022 SISTER THERESE: A LIFETIME OF LEARNING AND TEACHING "Knowledge is no weight to carry, get as much of it as you can!" After nearly 60 years as an educator, these... words from a former mentor while completing her training at the Catherine McCauley College have never left Sr Therese Masterson, who this week was recognised with the prestigious, Docemus award for her lifetime of contribution to Catholic education in Cairns. Sr Therese is at the end of a long line of teachers trained in the proud tradition of the Religious Sisters of Mercy. She arrived at the St Monicas College in 1959 driven by a thirst of knowledge and a desire to teach others in science. It might have seemed an unlikely path for the young woman who had grown up in Mossman and never even studied science at school. "The Russians put Sputnik up in 57 and that started the drive for science teachers," she explains. It set Sr Therese on the course of a rewarding and at times, perplexing career which transcended a period when the value of womens education had still not been fully realised. "I loved teaching science, opening kids minds and challenging them to think differently," she said. Sr Therese said she had few regrets about her 60-year career in Catholic education but admitted she still prayed for young women who may have left her care feeling theyd been harshly treated or not understood. "They were growing up, and they had an idea about freedom and not much sense about responsibility for themselves. "When youve been around young people all these years you have to own that there are some who you didnt treat as well as you might or you didnt understand their circumstances."
