24.01.2022 Easy Sugar Swaps to Save Your Teeth Most children (and many adults) enjoy a sugary treat, but with the risk of tooth decay, it is worth exploring how to reduce your family’s sugar consumption. https://www.ismiledentalclinic.com.au/easy-sugar-swaps-to-/

24.01.2022 Did you know? The average amount of money left by the tooth fairy in 1950 was 25 cents. In 1988 it was $1.00, the going rate now is $2.00.

23.01.2022 Straws can save your teeth! Did you know that soft drinks and fruit juices are the biggest culprits of tooth decay in children. This is due to the erosive effect of citric acid, which destroys the tooth enamel. Getting your child to drink through a straw means it bypasses the teeth and instead goes onto the tongue and roof of your mouth. Also limiting fruit juice to meal times, when they produce more saliva, will help to reduce the effects of harmful acid attacks.

23.01.2022 Sugar and nutrition Everything you eat and drink can have a major effect on the health of your teeth and gums. Tooth decay is a diet-related disease that commonly develops in response to our consumption of sugar. Sugar from the foods and drinks we consume is taken up by decay-causing bacteria that live on the surfaces of our teeth. These bacteria process the sugar, turning it into acid which is then excreted on the surface of our teeth where it draws out minerals from the too...th. If this process happens over and over, without any effort to prevent or stop the disease process, it can eventually result in the formation of tooth decay. The following link will help you break down your sugar consumption to help prevent tooth decay. https://www.ada.org.au//Ora/You-are-what-you-eat-and-drink

22.01.2022 What are chalky teeth? Chronic chalky teeth is a symptom of hypomineralization, a condition characterized by decreased mineral content in the mouth leading to exposed Dentine. That chalky feeling is a product of your enamel lacking mineral content, thus making your teeth more prone to cracking. This chronic condition will sometimes leave white spots on your teeth. You must be wary of the fact that your teeths strength is compromised, and will often lead to sensitivity when c...onsuming cold foods and drinks. Thats why chalky teeth are no joke any time sensitivity to temperature is an issue, the integrity of your teeth are compromised. By not properly treating chalky teeth, you risk breakage and increased pain. If you are experiencing any issues or concerns please contact us on 6925 5511

22.01.2022 Can Dental Hygiene Affect Fertility? Inadequate dental hygiene can affect fertility in both sexes. Gum disease and tooth decay have been linked with poor sperm health and sperm quality in men, while in women poor dental health may increase the time needed to conceive. Most of the research into the connection between dental health and fertility focuses on periodontal disease or gum disease. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection and can easily develop if you fail to brush and floss properly and do not visit your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings.

22.01.2022 Did you know? Women may be more susceptible to oral health problems because of the unique hormonal changes they experience. Hormones affect not only the blood supply to the gum tissue but also the body's response to the toxins (poisons) that result from plaque buildup. As a result of these changes, women are more prone to the development of periodontal disease at certain stages of their lives, as well as to other oral health problems. When Are Women More at Risk for Oral Health Problems? There are five situations in a women's life during which hormone fluctuations make them more susceptible to oral health problems during puberty, at certain points in the monthly menstrual cycle, when using birth control pills, during pregnancy, and at menopause.

20.01.2022 Socially-distanced team-bonding over table tennis!! No matter how you do it, it is always a great activity!

20.01.2022 What is an Intra-oral camera? Intra-oral cameras allow dental practitioners to see clear, accurate images of the mouth. Shaped like a wand, the camera can magnify images on a computer screen in real time. This enables patients to clearly see what the dentist is doing or referring to. In addition, the intra-oral camera can provide a detailed view of hard to see areas in the mouth. This helps to accurately identify problems such as a fractured tooth.

20.01.2022 Dr Sanabary and Dr Ghazy are participating in Movember this is their moustache progress photo so far! We are looking forward to seeing how they are looking at the end of the month!

19.01.2022 Milk and hard cheese encourage saliva production, which neutralise the acid in your mouth and helps prevent staining. Also, the calcium and other nutrients protect tooth enamel from eroding. Raw broccoli and celery are fibrous veggies, which help to clean your teeth while you munch, although this is not a replacement for your toothbrush or your preventative care visits with your hygienist

19.01.2022 Are you or your kids getting enough calcium in your diet? Calcium is important for building healthy teeth, jaws and bones, and for maintaining their health and function throughout your life. It also helps systems such as the nerves, muscles and heart to function. If you're not taking in enough calcium in food and drink, your body will instead take it from your bones and teeth. This can cause them to deteriorate over time, making teeth more vulnerable to damage from tooth decay and injuries, or leading to conditions such as osteoporosis.

19.01.2022 How neuromuscular dentistry can help with TMJ Your temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw, and when this joint is misaligned, it causes unwanted responses in the nerves and muscles around the joint, creating a problem called TMJ syndrome. https://www.ismiledentalclinic.com.au/tmj-treatment-wagga/

18.01.2022 What do I do if one of my orthodontic brackets comes loose? Temporarily reattach loose braces with a small piece of orthodontic wax. Alternatively, place the wax over the braces to provide a cushion. See your orthodontist as soon as possible. If the problem is a loose band, save it and call your orthodontist for an appointment to have it recemented or replaced (and to have missing spacers replaced).

18.01.2022 Tongue-tie treatments in Paediatric Dentistry. Tongue-tie is referred to as an embryological remnant of the tissue in the midline between the undersurface of the tongue and floor of the mouth. This tissue is known to inhibit the normal flexible movements of the tongue. The attachments of this tissue can be normal or multiple variants of the normal. Many a times, tongue-tie presents with subtle signs which explains why more than frequently the condition is missed on evaluation... and subsequent diagnosis by various professionals. Most common pointer that brings parents or the providers to check for the tongue-tie is speech alteration. Children with tongue-tie are unable to pronounce some of the speech sounds such as, CH, S, M, K, G, N, G, T, D, N, L , R, Z. They might stutter and may also be observed to avoid certain talking situations and words. Apart from speech alteration, there are many other signs and symptoms that start to surface from birth. These signs are divided into: baby’s signs and mother’s signs and experiences. See more

17.01.2022 What to Do If You Chip a Tooth A chipped tooth damages tooth enamel and increases the risk of infection and decay. While it might not be a dental emergency, it does require restorative treatment. Here is what to do if you chip a tooth. https://www.ismiledentalclinic.com.au/what-to-do-if-you-ch/

16.01.2022 Did you know? Tooth enamel is the hardest biological material. Even though its very thin, enamel is the hardest natural substance. In fact, it is harder than gold, silver and steel!

16.01.2022 Folklore from many parts of the world tells us that when children lose a baby tooth, they should place it underneath their pillow and the Tooth Fairy will visit while they are asleep, to take that lost tooth and leave a small payment, especially if those teeth have been kept very clean and shiny. So what might the Tooth Fairy do with these teeth? Send them up into the night sky to become stars Use as bricks for their white Tooth Fairy Castle They grind the teeth to make... magical fairy dust for all the fairies Make necklaces for all the other fairies Or perhaps it’s a secret so that the Tooth Fairy cannot tell us? 16.01.2022 Welcome to the iSmile family! We would like to introduce to you our new Front office coordinator June Duncan who is starting on Monday.

14.01.2022 Myth busted! I dont need to worry about baby tooth health since theyll fall out anyway. This is not true. In fact, baby teeth should be cared for in the same manner as adult teeth. Remember, oral health has a huge impact on your overall health and well-being! Primary teeth can become infected and damaged baby teeth can permanently harm other permanent teeth.

14.01.2022 What Is Tartar? Even if you take great care of your teeth at home, you still have bacteria in your mouth. They mix with proteins and food byproducts to form a sticky film called dental plaque. This gunk coats your teeth, gets under your gum line, and sticks to fillings or other dental work. Plaque carries bacteria that can damage tooth enamel and lead to cavities. But if you remove plaque regularly, you can prevent permanent tooth decay and gum disease. Bigger problems arise, however, if plaque stays on your teeth and hardens into tartar. Tartar, also called calculus, forms below and above the gum line. It is rough and porous and can lead to receding gums and gum disease. It must be removed with special tools in the dentist's office.

13.01.2022 What is Direct restoration? Direct restorations can be used when the broken part of the tooth is small and can be done in tooth coloured materials, which not only fix your tooth to the normal shape and strength but also improve the appearance of your smile. At iSmile our dentists are passionate about conservative dentistry so we do tooth- coloured restorations (composite resin) on the front and the back teeth as they require less tooth removal during preparation and preserve... the remaining tooth structure. These materials require experience and artistry and our dentists are keeping up to date through continuing education in this field and using the latest techniques and materials. For any concerns or for more information or to book an appointment please contact us on (02) 6925 5511 or [email protected] and materials.

11.01.2022 Why Does My Child Have Cavities Despite Regular Brushing? A very common concern with parents is children having cavities at young age despite the fact that they have been brushing regularly. We understand that dental cavities (tooth decay) are a multi-factorial disease that originates primarily due to lack of oral hygiene combined with other common factors such as high sugar diet and many more. It has been known that children’s pattern of brushing is mostly quick, inadequate ...and unassisted by adults. Young children have not mastered the brushing technique and miss on tough to reach areas such as those in between the teeth and close to gum lines. These are the areas where bacteria reside and dwell on food that keeps getting stuck in. In order to avoid this potential cause of cavities, brushing in children is recommended to be done, assisted or supervised by an adult until the age of ten to twelve years. Once all the permanent teeth have set in, children can be allowed to brush independently with occasional guidance and supervision. See more

09.01.2022 Learn the Different Ways Saliva Reflects Your Health Most people take saliva for granted and swallow it without even thinking about it, but it can provide valuable information about your oral health and overall health. Each day, we swallow nearly two litres of saliva, and it’s a liquid that has important properties. Spit has buffers neutralising acids, reducing your risk of tooth decay. It washes away food particles and bacteria, helping to prevent gum disease. However, there are lots of reasons why you may not produce enough high-quality saliva. https://www.ismiledentalclinic.com.au/learn-the-different-/

07.01.2022 This week, the 3rd-9th of August, is Dental Health week. This year the ADA is focusing on How much sugar is in your trolley. The focus of this years campaign is on the harm sugar does to oral health, aiming to help Australians to get sugar savvy. The campaign includes recommended daily sugar consumption levels, advice on reading food labels, and spells out the effect sugar has on our teeth. This information is reinforced with three main sugar messages:... Consume no more than 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of free sugar per day as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Choose foods with less than 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams. Look out for hidden sugars when purchasing foods and drinks.

06.01.2022 How Snacking Can Affect Your Teeth Snacking can help maintain energy levels but it's worth being mindful as to how snacks can harm your dental health. This is because choosing the wrong type of food can increase the risk of acid erosion. Foods that are high in carbohydrates or sugars, or which are naturally acidic will erode your tooth enamel more quickly. When this happens, you may find your teeth become increasingly sensitive and in the worst case they may begin to look more translucent at the biting edges or will appear a darker colour. Normally your teeth have a protective layer of opaque tooth enamel but when it thins due to acid erosion, it exposes more of the naturally darker tooth colour contained in the dentin underneath enamel. https://www.ismiledentalclinic.com.au/how-snacking-can-aff/

05.01.2022 A warm welcome to our new front office coordinator Vicky, we look forward to you all meeting her on your next visit to iSmile!

05.01.2022 At iSmile we believe your gum health is the key for a healthy fresh mouth and that is why we have a dedicated hygienist to provide tailored treatment and maintenance program for your gum health. Redness, swelling, bleeding and bad smell can all be signs for gum disease (gingivitis). If you notice any discomfort or bleeding when you brush or floss it can be an indication of underlying gum problem which needs to be addressed sooner than later to prevent it from getting worse. I...f left untreated this gum disease can progress into a more aggressive form called (periodontitis). It is a deep infection inside the gum that eats the bone and the supporting tissues away and eventually causing tooth loss. Our clinicians are very experienced in prevention, early detection and treatment of these gum diseases and can help you regaining your gum health and retaining your teeth for as long as possible. Patient comfort is very important to us and thats why we use the latest dental equipment which makes gum treatment a much more comfortable experience than before. For any concerns or for more information or to book an appointment please contact us on (02) 6925 5511 or [email protected]

04.01.2022 Does Brushing Harder Clean your teeth Better? Brushing harder is counterproductive. The harder you brush, the more trauma the tooth enamel and gum tissue endure. It can eventually lead to other problems such as gum recession. Brush gently for two minutes, twice daily with a soft-bristled brush.

03.01.2022 Did you know? A tooth is not a static and dead portion of the skeleton, It continuously adjusts and responds to physiological processes. Just like tree rings, we can look at 'tooth rings': continuously growing layers of tissue on the dental root surface. These rings are a faithful archive of an individual's physiological experiences and stressors from pregnancies and illnesses to incarcerations and menopause that all leave a distinctive permanent mark
