20.01.2022 Foam Rolling How does it work and is it good for me? The popularity of Foam Rolling has certainly grown within the health and fitness industry in recent years. With recent social restrictions in place, Foam Rolling is an easy technique you can complete in the space of your own home. ... Research has shown Foam Rolling can temporarily: - Improve flexibility and mobility - Reduce pain - Reduce stiffness There have been numerous theories into how Foam Rolling actually works. Original suggestions relating to breaking up or removing adhesions in the connective tissue called your Fascia have since been scrutinised. Thus, the most promising theory at this stage relates to your Nervous System! It is believed Foam Rolling provides a sensory input to your body which adjusts the volume of danger signals travelling to your brain. This effectively helps to suppress pain globally (the super technical term for this theory is Descending modulation through Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Control). In addition, this theory is supported by an interesting study which found rolling your hamstring muscles (back of the thigh) resulted in increased movement of the shoulder! Moreover, another recent theory explaining the effects of foam rolling relates to the effects of using agitation or heat which reduces the build up of liquids (another very technical term called Thixotropy). This may help to explain the local effects of the technique. Take Home Message! Foam rolling can help to relieve pain and increase movement in the comfort of your own home. Just remember, these effects may be temporary, so it is important is to use it as a tool to help you exercise. See more

13.01.2022 You can’t go from zero to 60 as soon as things open up! As restrictions start to ease across Australia, what are you going to be rushing back to? Maybe the gym or sporting activities? ... If so, be careful and wise! too much strain on your body from not playing sport or being in the gym for the past 3 months can cause damage to your body. You might ask WHY? Exercise researchers and physicians have some blunt advice for those of us aiming to return to regular exercise now, after months spent sheltering at home during the coronavirus pandemic. As we have been staying at home and sitting around the last few months, the risk of harm to our body skyrockets when we abruptly increase the amount or intensity of our workouts. Physiotherapist Julie Campbell states We would have lost condition and strength as well as mobility, and if you go back and hit the weights as we did, then wham, bam, we're potentially looking at an injury!. There are steps we can take to ease our way back into regular exercise safely without damaging our bodies. Most involve patience. Starting slow then gradually revving up reps and sets is key to reduce injury. TIPS take 30 per cent off your weights for the first few sessions before adding 10 per cent each week thereafter do a few more reps and stretches but don't push it too hard in the first few sessions, as you may injure yourself and be off another few weeks and that's no fun! look after your form, check your posture, and remember it's a marathon, not a sprint, and ease yourself back in If you have any questions or concerns about your readiness for exercise, give us a call or book a consultation via our website!
