25.01.2022 *** Student achievement Thursday*** This month it gives us great pleasure to celebrate the efforts and dedication of our student Hafidh Al-Rawahy, all the way from Oman. He has a very impressive resume; he has completed his bachelor degree in Computer Science from University of Washington, Seattle, and Masters in Information Systems from London School of Economics, London. Before retiring Hafidh worked for the government of Oman in Civil Aviation. Now he dedicates his time i...n pursuit of knowledge and serving the mosque. Hafidh is currently completing his Master of Islamic Studies with Charles Sturt University, averaging High Distinction to Distinction. What makes him stand out is not only his commitment to his studies, despite the time difference and logistics of taking online studies abroad, but his community service and voluntary work in one of Oman’s iconic mosques, "Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque", which dominates the skyline of Muscat. The mosque provides an amazing splendour of Islamic architecture and art, and it is open to non-Muslim tourists and residents. Hafidh dedicates his effort and time at the Islamic Information Center, which is part of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque educational facilities. One of Hafidh’s roles is to give travellers and visitors a better understanding of the beautiful architecture of the mosque but also to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about Islam, promoting understanding between people of different faiths and culture. This allows visitors to have a first-hand experience of Islam as the religion of peace, mercy, and understanding between different cultures. Mosques in Oman are closed due to covid-19 precautions, however that has not kept Hafidh away from finding ways to still serve the mosque; he has been involved in developing and printing resources such as booklets and pamphlets in different languages and on various aspects of Islamic teachings. Through his studies at Charles Sturt University, he has been able to better serve the community. On behalf of ISRA we commend your efforts and dedication to both your education and your community work in Oman. See more

20.01.2022 NAIDOC week is an opportunity to reflect on the First Nations people, to acknowledge and commemorate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal peoples. As ISRA we recognise that this land was not without people, this terra was not nullius. This land was, is, and will always be traditional Aboriginal land. We should also remember that historically, Muslims have connections engaging with first nations peoples. Dr Salih Yucel has written an article about this topic, feel free to check it out https://journal.equinoxpub.com/CIS/article/view/9637

19.01.2022 *Student Achievement Thursdays* Alia Qureshi is a wonderful example of how seeking knowledge can be a consistent driver in life. In 2015 Alia completed a 10 year Shariah course at Daar Aisha, so Alia had a strong grounding in Islamic knowledge at this point. But she always dreamed of understanding the Quran in its pure Arabic form. After being blessed with a 2nd grandchild, Alia travelled back home to visit her family in Pakistan. On the first day of her return to Australia,... she received an email congratulating her on her acceptance into the Master of Classical Arabic course. She was very puzzled as she never enrolled in the course. To her surprise Alia’s husband, who was well aware of her strong desire and determination to learn the Quran, enrolled Alia in the course while she was away. She has been so grateful to him ever since. Alia was not very computer literate but thought the course significantly enhanced her computer skills. While studying the Master of Classical Arabic, Alia was blessed with having her 4th and 5th grandchildren, and despite being committed with her growing family, she managed to complete her Master of Classical Arabic at age 58. Alia is still actively involved in seeking knowledge. She regularly attends lectures, and teaches her friends and family the knowledge she has gained. Mashallah we are so proud of all your success Alia. It seems you were meant to do this course. Inspired by Alia’s story? Make 2021 the year of learning Arabic, the language of the Quran. Enrol in the Master of Classical Arabic TODAY More info: https://study.csu.edu.au//islamic-/master-classical-arabic To enrol: https://study.csu.edu.au/start-your-application If you have knowledge of Arabic, you may qualify for RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) for subject(s) in the course. For any questions, email Rahil at [email protected]

17.01.2022 Dr Suleyman Sertkaya brought to our attention the dwelling of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in tonight's webinar on Fiqh al-Sirah. These images are an attempted replica of the Prophet's (pbuh) home. As you can see, it is extremely humble, especially when his home could have easily been much more luxurious in the Medinah era. But he (pbuh) chose a humble dwelling such as this.

17.01.2022 We are living in crazy times. Islamic principles always reinforce the importance of maintaining ties with loved ones, and to love for your brother or sister what you love for yourself. On behalf of ISRA Australia, we encourage you check in on those that you know, and spread the positivity.

14.01.2022 Most countries overestimate the Muslim population. The French think that 31% of their population is Muslim when it is actually 7.5%. In Australia, the Muslim population is estimated to be 12% when it is actually 2.4% (Source: Ipsos MORI). This overestimation has many implications, mainly feeling the 'threat' that a minority is 'taking over'. This can easily manifest itself in the form of Islamophobia and other hostile actions which seek to eliminate the group at hand.

07.01.2022 Death. Sometimes you watch people die slowly through cancer or some other terminal illness. Sometimes it hits you out of nowhere through an accident or some oth...er sudden tragedy. Tonight hits hard. Dr Alaa Radwan, who was an orphan himself, passed away in a sudden car accident a few hours ago leaving behind an expecting young wife and 2 young children. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon. They just recently moved right next to the Masjid. His wife is the sister of our marketing director at Yaqeen, and the daughter of 2 pillars of our Valley Ranch community. This was a family man that exuded a great sense of love to everyone around him. Gentle, loving, and focused. May Allah accept him as a Shaheed, and make it easy for his widow and 2 (soon to be 3 inshaAllah) children that have been left behind. May Allah unite them all in Jannatul Firdaws, and allow his memory and example to stay with them in this dunya. Ameen The Janaza will be at VRIC tomorrow after Asr inshaAllah. Please join us if you can. Please keep them in your duas, and reflect on this beautiful post by his wife Noor Alkurdi that Sh. Yaser found from last year: "Prophet Muhammad pbuh said: "What actions are most excellent? To gladden the heart of human beings, to feed the hungry, to help the afflicted, to lighten the sorrow of the sorrowful, and to remove the sufferings of the injured. (Bukhari) A beautiful story narrated by my husband: This afternoon was a typical one-I was rushing down the hospital hallways from one OR to the next in my scrub cap and cowboy boots. When suddenly I heard someone call out "doctor, doctor, doctor!!" I finally looked back and saw an old white man in his 70s or so. He walked up to me and in very broken Arabic said, Assalam Alaikum. I replied yet still unsure who he was. He then said you probably don't even remember me but about a year ago my wife was in this hospital battling terminal cancer. One day I was in the chapel and you walked in with your cowboy boots and your surgery cap with the skulls-(which was a shockingly accurate description). You said hello to me and noticed that I was crying so you walked over and handed me the box of tissues. Then you walked away and you put a rug on the floor-and prayed. I had never ever seen anyone pray a complete prayer before. I knew it was Islamic from a few second clip on TV but it was my first time witnessing the whole prayer. He then said I remember you just sat there afterwards and held your hands up in what looked like supplication. Then you came up to me again and told me you prayed for me and whatever was causing me to cry". At this point I finally recalled the story, amazed by the thorough detail given by the man. He then said it was just such a beautiful moment for me and it led me to google Islam and research it and 5 months ago I converted to Islam... I was frozen and overwhelmed with emotion and embraced the man. He said that he had been making regular visits to the hospital and nursing stations to thank the nurses that took care of his wife and to hopefully find me too. And today he found me and Im so glad he did. I have been an attending at this hospital for 2 years now and only once in that period was I called in to operate late until 2am which happened to be the same night I found the man in the chapel, the same night that Allah chose for this man to be saved. Alhamdulilah Allah chose me for this story. I am humbled and eternally grateful. ******** Let this be a lesson in humanity for us all-to be human and kind, to be caring and compassionate. This story reminds us that something that we might consider small or insignificant or routine might have a huge impact on someone elses life. It reminds us of the importance of our salah and how just merely performing our religious duties and obligations and having Muslim character is the most beautiful and rewarding way to reach someone. I ask Allah swt to accept from us all, strengthen our iman and make us amongst the rightful ambassadors of Islam. Ameen." UPDATE WITH LAUNCHGOOD CAMPAIGN FOR HIS FAMILY. 05.01.2022 The fact that Allah swt made a good word charity gives it more weight than if it was just a good deed . Imagine if this hadith said "a good word is a good deed for which we'll be rewarded" or something similar. It doesn't hold the same weight When we consider that our good words are charity it brings our minds: - Bringing happiness to someone, which in turn brings happiness to ourselves and others - Increased motivation to say good words because they're not just go...od deeds but charity - Sometimes good words are hard when in a challenging situation but the outcome is definitely worth it in this life and the next - The Mercy of Allah (God) that there are so many forms of charity so everyone can give charity, not only those with wealth. May Allah allow only good words to come from us and may we appreciate the blessing to be able to give charity through good words. Jummah Mubarakah from the ISRA team! See more

02.01.2022 We're so proud of Nayma Bilal for being a voice for Muslim women. Nayma is a volunteer at ISRA. She is also a mentee in ISRA's Muslim Women's Leadership Program, currently being mentored by Dr Juliana Jamaluddin. "That's one of the most upsetting parts about media representation; when the media is focused so heavily on representing Muslims as terrorists and as bad people," the 19-year-old told the ABC. "It creates this unconscious bias in people's minds when they are interacting with Muslims."
