15.01.2022 Another report this week of an Australian business falling victim to cyber attack via emails. This could easily have resulted in the company data being locked up and held for ransome. But in this case they lost A$77k and are not expected to recover it. Some good tips near the end of the article for spotting some of the signs of an attack. https://ia.acs.org.au//ice-rink-loses--77k-in-email-scam.h

13.01.2022 Leon Compton of ABC Northern Tasmania did an excellent article on how to handle the myriad of passwords we now find ourselves trying to keep track of. How do we handle this problem? Do you just use one difficult to guess password on many sites? Surely there must be a better way! Maybe you think some of your on-line accounts dont hold any useful information for hackers. Think again. Listen to Leon and get some very good tips from his interviewee, Gareth Willis from the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Information Security Association. https://www.abc.net.au//how-do-you-avoid-being-ha/12010692

11.01.2022 Alex receives an email from a regular contact. It has a file attached which is an invoice, the subject line is Invoice 20756. The body of the email looks good, spelling and grammar all check out and Alex is addressed personally rather than just Hello. Additionally the email from address is the regular email address of the sender. Alex wasnt necessarily expecting an invoice but another staff member may have purchased from that company. Based on that Alex goes ahead an opens the attached invoice. What do you think? The Invoice:

10.01.2022 If Ransom-ware hits your business what disaster recovery systems do you have in place to ensure your business is not crippled to the point of collapse? Toll Group, a large Australian courier, suffered such an attack which had the potential to bring this large company to their knees. Read about it here: https://ia.acs.org.au//toll-group-recovers-after-ransomwar They did not pay the ransom and are restoring their systems. My bet is they have good, tested regular backups of th...eir critical systems in place. Have you prepared for the day when you click on an email link which turns out to be a malicious attack? Speak to us about how we can help ensure you never have to pay to get your data unencrypted. See more

07.01.2022 This is a really important topic for small business owners, one we often ignore because of lack of knowledge, hoping it wont affect us. But there are some simple strategies we can employ to reduce the risks of being hit and/or reduce the impact if we are hit. We will be presenting this workshop at the paranaple Centre.

02.01.2022 Creating Better Passwords In our digital world one of the most common security devices we use is the password. It used to be a reasonable security solution but it is no longer a good solution in itself. One of the reasons it has lessened in its usefulness is because we often create and use weak passwords and re-use them. By re-using I mean using the same password on several accounts or websites. We probably all realise that using a short word as a password is a bad idea. You ...Continue reading
