24.01.2022 ITPA recently committed to ensuring that our application process (you can become an associate member for free, here: https://www.itpa.org.au/join/) is not gender-binary. As you can see from the following screen-grab, we have achieved this in two ways: * Firstly, this field is not compulsory. Whilst knowing the gender balance of our organisation is helpful in planning our strategies and services, we dont force people to give us this data if they dont wish to.... * Although its not perfect (were limited to some degree by the platform our website is based on, but are working on upgrades to help here), we believe that this form now allows those who do not identify with being strictly male or female to provide an alternate response. Although this may seem to only be a tiny change, we believe that by fully embracing the diversity of our community, we can better serve our membership and the industry as a whole.

22.01.2022 As an IT Professional (particularly if you work in a security-related role), privacy is something that you need to have a good understanding of if you want to offer appropriate services to your employer and/or customers. Salinger Privacy are running a webinar to provide important information on privacy for IT Professionals. Details are available here: https://www.salingerprivacy.com.au//privacy-for-it-profes/... The webinar is normally $99 to attend - but ITPA financial members can attend for free!

21.01.2022 Its been a busy time for both ITPA and the industry at large. The EGM was held late April and voted to continue the work, and the changing world is presenting plenty of challenges for us all. https://www.itpa.org.au/news/presidents-message-may-2020/

20.01.2022 It is 12 months since the TOLA (Telecommunications and Other Legislation Amendments) laws were passed in an effort to break ubiquitous online encryption. Despite widespread criticism of the proposed laws by industry and community, the laws passed anyway, with the consultation process followed by government seen as many to be a sham. InnovationAus are running a survey to determine how people believe it has impacted them and their employers in the way they do business locally a...nd globally. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HHZB8PP

20.01.2022 October 2020 NSW Catchup - @Sydney Sabre social catchup We’ve scored a deal with Sydney Sabre https://sydneysabre.com/ to run a pizza-slash-sabre-fencing social event for our members on 6pm Friday 30 October. If you don’t know what sabre fencing is, here’s a short Youtube primer https://youtu.be/sqinvvppLk8 . If you do know what fencing is, then you know it will be a motivating opportunity to get out, get moving again, connect with your peers and perhaps hit them as well. F...rom 1.5 metres away. The agenda will be the same as it usually is, but in a slightly different order: get a crash course in sabre, fence some bouts, eat pizza and socialise, then onto general discussions about IT over drinks at the pub (the Empire and the Annandale are on the other side of the street). Details: Time and Date: 6pm Friday 30 October Session details: 6pm-7pm crash course; 7pm-8pm bouts and pizza; 8pm onwards to the pub. Location: Sydney Sabre, 1/112-116 Parramatta Road, Stanmore 2048 Cost: $49 for ITPA professional members, $65 for non-members. Transport: There is parking on-site, accessed from Corunna Lane. 19.01.2022 https://www.itnews.com.au//nbn-co-floats-its-own-netflix-t This is an appalling idea. It is an attack on net neutrality, and needs to be treated as such. The #NBN is meant to be a content-agnostic Layer 2 network. The failure of their commercial model is reason for them to re-evaluate things within their remit, not outside of it.

08.01.2022 The latest Intel CPU vulnerability has been named "Plundervolt". What is it, and should you be worried? Were glad you asked. The tl;dr - it allows an attacker with local root/admin rights (so it isnt directly remotely executable) to manipulate CPU voltage to change the contents of the secure data store (SGX) within certain Intel CPUs. This could then, in theory, be used to crack encryption keys from data that was present at the time of the attack. Thankfully in our increasi...ngly online world where many workloads are virtualised, virtual workloads cant be used to carry out the attack either - so taking advantage of this vulnerability will be hard. Intel have released fixes, details in the story. https://www.zdnet.com//new-plundervolt-attack-impacts-int/

07.01.2022 Electronic Voting is often looked at with suspicion, with concerns that the system can be manipulated or valuable data extracted from them. Swiss authorities are about to start a public intrusion test on their e-voting system (offering prize money to people who manage to exploit bugs or vulnerabilities in the system), in the hope that they can offer a truly safe and secure e- voting system for future elections. https://www.itpro.co.uk//swiss-government-invites-hackers-... With concerns over hacking and manipulation of voting data in recent times (alleged Russian interference in US voting for example), could Switzerlands learnings from this lead to more secure online and electronic voting in the future in Switzerland and abroad?
