15.01.2022 How things have changed from when we grew up, back in the day when outdoor cricket or football kept us entertained for hours. Some of us were even lucky enough to have or know someone with a Commodore 64 or Atari gaming console that also kept us entertained for hours. Today most Australian children now have tablets. More than half of Australian children aged six to 13 own or have access to a tablet device or computer. ... Well at least these devices keep the kids quiet most of the time! .

14.01.2022 Do you use a credit card?? Australia is moving from signature to compulsory PIN for all credit transactions as of tomorrow, yes tomorrow 1 August 2014. As of tomorrow signatures no longer accepted. These changes are applicable to all credit and debit cards across Australia including VISA, AMEX, Diners and MasterCard. The move to PIN is an added security measure which is expected to help minimise fraud in the event of a lost or stolen credit or debit card, making it harder fo...r fraudsters to gain access to your accounts. If you dont know or have a PIN then you better call or visit your bank ASAP.

12.01.2022 Beware: Scammers Move In On MH370, Hoping To Exploit Mystery With Malware Links Scammers are using the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 to hack PCs with malware the ACCCs SCAMwatch has warned. The most common form is video links, with claims that the plane has been found, via social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.... By clicking on the link, you may infect your PC with malware, which can be used to obtain passwords and other confidential details, and allow cyber criminals to gain remote access to your computer. Scammers use a range of tools to trick people under the guise of topical stories or events, such as spam emails with malicious content, selling fake tickets to an event in high demand One example currently doing the rounds says Malaysia Plane (MH-370) Has Been Found Near Bermuda Triangle. BBC News: Recent Video Released!, which goes through to a fake website that asks you to install software. Be carefull people

11.01.2022 Beware energy bill scams on the rise SCAMwatch is warning consumers to be on the lookout for energy billing scams currently doing the rounds. A new phishing email pretending to be from reputable energy companies is currently circulating, which claims you owe money for an outstanding gas or electricity bill. 10.01.2022 Crypto-Ransomware VIRUS - Be warned people, this virus is a real threat. I have had to deal with the effects of this virus on two occasions in the past fortnight where this virus has swept through two large corporate firms in Melbourne. Once activated, within minutes this virus will attack your documents and network shares and render all sorts of files unusable (Word, Excel, PDF, PowerPoint, Image Files and more). If you dont have a recent valid backup or Shadow Copy you c...an kiss your data good bye unless you want to potentially pay the ransom to try and recover your data. Your antivirus software may well be up to date and you think you are safe, well the chances are you are not. Antivirus software does not protect again viruses distributed via emails with ZIP or Archive attachments. For example, Australia Post has warned its customers about fake emails which advise that a "courier" has been unable to deliver a parcel to their address. The email then requests the customer to open attachments which provide information about their package and asks them to go to their local post office to collect the package. The bottom line is, DONT OPEN EMAIL ARCHIVES OR ZIP FILES FROM PEOPLE YOU DONT KNOW OR ARNT EXPECTING AND EMAIL FROM. More info here -> http://www.abc.net.au//fake-auspost-emails-used-in/5795734 Ill post a few links with some prevention software that can help home users protect themselves against this threat. Id also encourage all readers to share this post to their friends and family. I wouldnt normally post something like this, but this is a real talking point at the moment.

09.01.2022 windows-xp-users-here-are-your-upgrade-options Windows XP wont be officially supported for much longer. Sure, you could keep using it it wont just stop working one day. It will just become more insecure over time as Microsoft and everyone else stops supporting it. In a nutshell, Windows XP is old. It doesnt support modern hardware properly and it isnt as secure as modern versions of Windows because it doesnt have User Account Control and other modern security features.... As time goes on, Windows XP will become increasingly insecure and both hardware and software vendors will stop supporting it. Try using modern hardware or software on Windows 98, Windows Me, or even Windows 2000 even Firefox no longer supports Windows 2000. Windows XP is next in line for the chopping block. Where You Can Go From Here Perhaps youve heard about how awkward Windows 8 can be on traditional computers If youre using Windows XP, were assuming youre not using one of Microsofts Windows XP tablets. Or perhaps youre perfectly happy with your existing software and just use your computer for very basic things, so you dont see the point in paying Microsoft an upgrade fee. Here are your options: Windows 7: If youre still using Windows XP, theres a good chance you wont want to go through the shock of upgrading to Windows 8. Windows 7 isnt the latest, but its the most widely used version of Windows and will be supported until January 14, 2020. Even today, many businesses are upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 not Windows 8. If youre a typical home user, getting Windows 7 may take a bit of extra footwork. New computers come with Windows 8, and your local PC store probably doesnt sell Windows 7. If you want to get a boxed copy of Windows 7 to upgrade to, you may want to get it online boxed copies of Windows 7 are still sold on websites like Amazon, although you probably wont find them in many PC stores. Windows 8: Windows 8 can be rather awkward on traditional PCs without touch screens, especially at first. That said, its not completely unbearable. It actually offers many desktop features that are an upgrade over Windows 7 and you can hide much of the new Modern environment. Windows 8 has the advantage of being easier to find. You can go into any computer shop and buy a boxed copy of Windows 8 or a new computer with Windows 8. Microsoft even sells Windows 8 in downloadable form. The other option is to go for an Apple MAC

03.01.2022 Dont rush to jump to Windows 10. When youre running a small business, the most important thing you need from your computers is stability. Its more important that theyre reliably doing their jobs than it is to have them running the latest and greatest version of Windows. Unless your line of work demands that you immediately make the move to Windows 10, sit back and let others forge the way Before you take the plunge youll also need to check whether all your business soft...ware plays nicely with Windows 10. Most businesses rely on an Office suite and accounting package, but you might also depend on Point of Sale software, Customer Relationship Management, remote desktop tools, cloud backup software or audio and video editing suites. If you cant live without it, you need to be sure it can run smoothly on Windows 10. Also think about hardware you might need new software and drivers for printers, scanners, USB dongles, Point of Sale hardware and other devices that you rely on to run your business
