20.01.2022 BRISBANE'S RECORDED HISTORY dates from 1799, when Matthew Flinders explored Moreton Bay on an expedition from Port Jackson, although the region had long been occupied by the Yugara and Turrbal aboriginal tribes. A permanent settlement in the region was not founded until 1823, when New South Wales Governor Thomas Brisbane was petitioned by free settlers in Sydney to send their worst convicts elsewhere and the area chosen became the city of Brisbane. In 1824, the first convict... colony was established at Redcliffe Point. In 1838, the area was opened up for free settlers, as distinct from convicts. The town was conceived initially as a penal colony for British convicts sent from Sydney. Its suitability for fishing, farming, timbering, and other occupations, however, caused it to be opened to free settlement in 1838. An early group of Lutheran missionaries from Germany were granted land in what is now the north side suburb of Nundah. The town became a municipality in 1859 and a consolidated metropolitan area in 1924. Brisbane encountered major flooding disasters in 1893, 1974 and 2011. Significant numbers of US troops were stationed in Brisbane during World War II. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Brisbane

19.01.2022 Media Statement Premier and Minister for Trade The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk Wednesday, August 05, 2020 Queensland border closed... Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced the border with New South Wales will close. As of 1am, Saturday August 8, all visitors will be denied entry except for rare exemptions, and returning Queenslanders will have to pay for 14 days mandatory hotel quarantine. Queenslands Chief Health Officer has declared all of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory as hotspots. The Premier said the hard border closure put Queenslanders first. I said that when the moment came, I would not hesitate, the Premier said. That moment has arrived. Victoria hasnt improved as we hoped and I wont wait for New South Wales to get any worse. I will not risk our states economic recovery by allowing COVID to spread. I will do everything I can to protect Queenslanders and the economy. Only residents of border communities and essential workers, such as truck drivers, will be able to cross the border. Exemptions including for compassionate reasons - will be limited. Passes for border communities will be for those with proof of address and photo ID. The Premier said providing notice gave people time to plan. Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles said recent examples showed a blatant disregard for the law. The selfish and reckless actions of a few people are putting the safety of our community at risk and threatening to undo all of the good work of Queenslanders so far, Mr Miles said. I urge Queenslanders not to travel interstate; the risks are too great. Stay in Queensland and stay safe. The Premier said the border closure would be reviewed at the end of the month. 10.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW THIS TREE KILLS NATIVE BEES? It may look very pretty, but it's flowers are toxic to native stingless bees. It is the African tulip tree, and is con...sidered to be a serious environmental weed. It's fast growing and it out-competes native vegetation. Biosecurity Queensland recommends that if you have one in your garden, you can help by removing it and then treat the stumps with herbicide. Biosecurity Queensland

08.01.2022 UPDATED TO INCLUDE FULL ARTICLE - A staple of north Brisbane dining culture which disappeared for more than a year is back in business. Nundah food icon Mary Kios closed the doors to her 12-year-old deli at Toombul shopping centre in January 2019 much to the devastation of her legion of customers. But after relentless enquiries from patrons about where she would go to next, she launched a new-look deli at Stafford last week.... The store has seen the return of Ms Kios extensive range of Mediterranean foods including charcuterie meats and boutique cheeses and gourmet condiments, and importantly he famous home-cooked sauces and stocks. North Brisbane food icon Mary Kios has just launched a new deli at Stafford. In all that time I was closed I had customers constantly calling me, asking me if I had found a new site yet, Ms Kios said. I would go shopping (and people would stop me), it was the most amazing thing Ive ever seen. She said she decided to make the move to the 240 Stafford Rd, Stafford after she was approached by facility managers to take up a tenancy. For the 18 months I didnt have my shop I wasnt happy. All I wanted to do was go back... your customers become your family. Shes been open for barely a week and already she says she has been inundated. Im seeing a lot new (customers), but a lot of old ones too. Its wonderful, Im alive. This is my life. She said she was excited to create a delightful epicurean ambience with all the high quality selections of local and international foods I previously enjoyed trading. I plan to also incorporate Indigenous foods to the extensive new and old favourites menu. After a short opening and settling in period cheese and wine tastings, featuring both imported and local products, will be a regular feature. A daughter of Greek migrant parents, Ms Kios learnt the secret to incomparable customer service from a young agae. My parents first business was in Kelvin Grove, she said, reflecting on the general store which they opened in 1954 which then included a milk bar, snack bar, lolly counter and a host of groceries. I moved into corporate catering in August 1974 when the industry was still in its infancy. Mary K Catering, she said, served prime minsters, cabinet ministers, lord mayors, property developers, banks and rock stars as well as corporate heads. A development of all the boardroom lunches and cocktail parties we catered for saw us as the exclusive caterers for Queensland Newspapers in their Expo 88 pavilion. https://www.couriermail.com.au//360aacb22385673c5ad0bef0c0

07.01.2022 Like many of our favourite annual events, fireworks spectacular Riverfire is firmly off the cards for 2020and considering we avoid it like the plague most years because of the crowds, were definitely not surprised it didnt make the new socially distanced Brisbane Festival cut. But if youre one of the avid fans who stakes out a grassy vantage point by mid-morning every year, youll be happy to know that you dont have to accept a September without any light-related enterta...inment. Brisbane Festival has found another way for us to enjoy the skies, with the Sunsuper Night Sky set to light up the city skyline during September. Acting as a literal light at the end of the tunnel, the show will be a large-scale laser, light and sound extravaganza, with beams of light shining up from over a dozen buildings across the city, all designed by acclaimed audio-visual artist Robin Fox. As if that wasnt enough, the show is set to an ethereal soundtrack, which you can catch by tuning in to Triple M while the lights are ablaze. Bonus, instead of a one-off event, the Sunsuper Night Sky will be a weekly occurrence over the course of the festival, which means you can catch the interconnecting and pulsing laser beam experience every Friday and Saturday night between September 426, from 7pm to 9pm. If youre up to it, you can glimpse the show from several self-guided viewing trails across the city, with trail maps downloadable from here in September. Personally, we recommend finding a table somewhere with a view for the ultimate experienceglass of bubbly optional. Love a good view? Gaze at the Story Bridge from one of these pop up igloo bars.
