25.01.2022 'Man up', 'Such a wuss', 'Stop being a wimp' are things people say to shame men for straying from outdated norms of masculinity like aggression, self-reliance and hypersexuality. Some men who conform to these behaviours might feel the need to mistreat marginalised groups through street harassment and other forms of harm to assert their power - and that's when these expectations become toxic. The pressure to appear ‘manly’ not only has detrimental effects on men’s mental heal...th and discourages them from embracing their feelings and emotions, but it also dampens efforts to fight for gender equality. Check out our graphics below to get a glimpse of what constitutes Masculinity, the harmful effects of Toxic Masculinity, and what the emerging Masculinity is in today's society. #masculinity #toxicmasculinity #manbox #gendernorms #genderstereotype #streetharassment #malementalhealth #streetharassment #patriarchy #itsnotacompliment #melbourne #victoria

24.01.2022 We deal with so much harassment and everyday sexism that it can be hard not to believe what we're told. What are some of the sexist comments you hear on the regular, or that you tell yourself? Repost from @unwomen ... 24.01.2022 DAY 1 OF 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM Tarana Burke is one of the most influential activists of our time. She created the Me Too movement in 2006 to talk about just how prevalent sexual assault and abuse is. The movement gained international attention in 2017 when actress Alyssa Milano tweeted the hashtag #MeToo to talk about her experience of sexual abuse. Burke was named Time’s Person of the Year in 2017. #16daysofactivism #activist #activism #feminist #feminism #endsexism #endstreetharassment #genderequality #equalityforall #endgenderviolence #ourvoice #ourstories #ourvoicesmatter #globalactivism #streetharassment #stopstreetharassment #saferstreets #respect #itsnotacompliment #melbourne #victoria

23.01.2022 DAY 3 OF 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM If you consider yourself an intersectional feminist, you have Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw to thank. Crenshaw is an American lawyer, civil rights advocate, philosopher, and founder/leading scholar of critical race theory. She first presented the theory of intersectionality in a paper entitled Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics in 1989. ...This paper argues that black womanhood cannot be understood from the lens of being a woman or being a black person independently, but rather that the two interact with each other in a way that cannot be separated. 20.01.2022 Street harassment can be a traumatic experience that leaves people feeling vulnerable and powerless. If you have experienced street harassment, what would you do if you could be there for yourself at the time it happened? It could be assertively calling out the harassers, or telling yourself it was not your fault that people violated your boundaries. 17.01.2022 Sexism affects us everywhere, everyday. It's comments thrown at us when we walk down the street, the eyes watching our every move, the hands that grab our bodies. It comes in comments about our race or our sexuality. Dealing with everyday sexism and street harassment is a lot! It stacks up and weighs us down quickly. It's okay to be tired. It's okay to need a break. We are here to help carry the load. #sexism #everydaysexism #streetharassment #onlineharassment #feminism #feminist #intersectionality #intersectionalfeminist #itsnotacompliment

10.01.2022 A landmark survey by @planinternational has found that 65% of Australian young women and girls have experienced online violence. 1 in 5 of these women and girls feared for their safety as a result. The answer to this violence is not as simple as 'log out'. Social media platforms have increasingly become our main tool for connecting with friends and family, as well as activism and sharing news stories. If we lose our ability to navigate social media safely, we lose our connect...ion with the world. 10.01.2022 DAY 2 OF 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM Unity Dow is a Botswana judge, human rights activist, and writer. She has been a strong voice for women’s rights. Most notably, she fought and won a case against the Attorney General of Botswana to establish that children can claim Botswana citizenship from their mothers, not just their fathers. 06.01.2022 There is no game. If she says no, don't, stop, leave me alone, go away, or anything else along those lines, assume she means what she says. 06.01.2022 While street harassment can be intersectional, many experiences are an expression of gender based violence. If we are able to stamp out violence against women, a large portion of street harassment will stop as well. 01.01.2022 Masks and social distancing have not stopped street harassment. Our boundaries continue to be violated, even when there is the possibility for the perpetrator to contract a deadly virus. 01.01.2022 Today starts @unwomen 16 Days of Activism against gender based violence. From the 25th of November to the 10th of December, It’s Not A Compliment will be highlighting 16 activists and their work against all forms of gendered violence. Street harassment is just one type of gendered violence and we must take a stand against the all forms of this inequality. Together, let’s #orangetheworld #16daysofactivism #16days #genderequality #equality #equalityforall #ourvoices #day1 #activism #itsnotacompliment #stopstreetharassment #melbourne #Victoria

01.01.2022 No one should feel like street harassment is a part of growing up. Sadly, these stories from Student Voice Network and Girls Uniform Agenda show why unfortunately it is. It is deeply troubling and simply intolerable that so many can experience harassment as early as school, and we can never stress enough that no matter how someone might be dressed - they are never asking for it. In these situations, the one to blame is always the perpetrator. #itsneverokay #thisisstreetharassment #streetharassment #sexualharassment #uniform #schooluniform #femalestudents #stopfetishisingschooluniform #girl #teenagegirl #awareness #story #streetharassmentstory #itsnotacompliment #melbourne #victoria

01.01.2022 What is masculinity to you? We tend to put masculinity in a box with rigid guidelines: strong, brave, big, hard, loud, tough. When we put men into this box, we restrict their ability to be a person, to be vulnerable, to be soft, scared, or sad. Jai Tao from the Men's Project believes that these guidelines for masculinity are outdated. Our current society no longer reflects the boxes that we are placed in. Can we redefine masculinity? #feminism #patriarchy #masculinity #toxicmasculinity #stopsexism #itsnotacompliment
