25.01.2022 'Man up', 'Such a wuss', 'Stop being a wimp' are things people say to shame men for straying from outdated norms of masculinity like aggression, self-reliance and hypersexuality. Some men who conform to these behaviours might feel the need to mistreat marginalised groups through street harassment and other forms of harm to assert their power - and that's when these expectations become toxic. The pressure to appear ‘manly’ not only has detrimental effects on men’s mental heal...th and discourages them from embracing their feelings and emotions, but it also dampens efforts to fight for gender equality. Crenshaw is an American lawyer, civil rights advocate, philosopher, and founder/leading scholar of critical race theory. She first presented the theory of intersectionality in a paper entitled Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics in 1989. ...This paper argues that black womanhood cannot be understood from the lens of being a woman or being a black person independently, but rather that the two interact with each other in a way that cannot be separated.
