16.01.2022 Weekend Wonders || Alpacas are cute and gentle. I love alpacas - there may be a personal bias here, but I doubt that. A funny fact about alpacas is that female alpacas tend to queue for the loo together. I guess this does not just happen in the human world! *giggle* Images are taken during a farmstay at Eaglewood B&B and Alpaca Stud in Murrumbateman NSW. 08.01.2022 Happy Penguin Awareness Day! Today we celebrate these cute waddling creatures. We are all familiar with the Fairy penguins here in Australia - the tiny blue penguins, also known to be the smallest penguins in the world. However, between February to March, a vagrant penguin may decide to take a visit along Australia's southern coastline. Vagrant penguins could be of species such as Royal penguins, Macaronie penguins, Rockhopper penguins etc. These vagrant penguins originate fr...om subantarctic islands, and usually seek refuge on a quiet beach to allow their feathers to moult. This is very important as penguins are heavily reliant on the warmth and waterproofing provided by their feathers. Our little Fairy penguins usually moult in their burrows, however their distant cousins tend to moult in the open air. If you are ever so lucky to spot a penguin that stands above ~43cm tall (approx. size of a Fairy penguin) between February and March, it is likely to be a vagrant penguin. Admire it from afar as getting too close would stress them out. There has been occasions of people returning moulting penguins into the ocean, thinking they're being helpful, when in fact could put the penguins in life-threatening situations. If unsure, do call your local wildlife conservation department. 08.01.2022 itto Shells are made of bamboo fibre, PBAT and PLA. We now know what PBAT is, but what is PLA? Short for polylactic acid, PLA is a plant-based polymer, produced by fermentation of a carbohydrate source such as cornstarch. This means that PLA is made of renewable sources. ... It can be 100% composted in an industrial facility, releasing no toxins at all into the environment. That said, PLA can only be broken down under specific conditions, such as humidity and temperature. Many products containing PLA are claimed to be home-compostable, but in actual fact, they can only be home-composted if the composting temperature reaches 60C. Due to its rigid and brittle nature, it is commonly combined with other types of plastic such as PBAT to increase its strength and flexibility. PBAT is also added to PLA to lessen the time needed for the product to biodegrade.
