23.01.2022 Poem: Miss Doris Maude Walker Remembered. By Judy Dixon silver strands of soft hair are loosely clasped in tortoiseshell combs a grey grey flannel dress... falls limply draping her substantial spirit enshrouded in black academic folds this stubborn character facing war weathering disaster subduing conflict fighting poverty is dignity and strength unyielding and resolute her stern serene stance shields and guides her Ivanhoe school warm and sympathetic tears fill her glistening eyes as she sings from within a chain of hymns an unmoving column of sweet and sound foundation she upholds School Queen God and Country assured in deep belief of their value she faces faces faces life's thorns honestly calmly without pretentiousness (Contributed to the Grammarians Association Bulletin 1975).

23.01.2022 There are always girls at the School who are daughters or grand daughters of other past students? Do you know any? In 1985 there were five girls photographed who were grand daughters of Old Girls.

22.01.2022 We hope everyone is safe today. Here is another reminiscence to (hopefully) distract you from the current circumstance: "Boys and girls attended the school until Ivanhoe Grammar School was established in 1915 in the St James' Parish Hall. There were only a small number of students, some of whom were boarders!".

21.01.2022 Who still has their Craft Bucket? Who still has their pair of scissors with a name tag on them? Who is using their skills from Junior and Senior Craft to make a Face Mask ??? Let us know. In the meantime here is a pattern for you to follow: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au//Design%20and%20preparation%20

18.01.2022 Performances of music and drama have been common. In 1950 a play called "She stoops to conquer" involved a relatively large cast. Acknowledgements include the Headmaster and Staff of Ivanhoe Grammar School and also the Rev Hudson and members of the St James' Dramatic Club. What performances were you involved with ??

17.01.2022 In 1935 the School Magazine reports that a Nursery Kindergarten was opened for children aged 3 - 7 years. There was apparently an amount of Modern equipment and also a slide, sand pit, garden beds and lawn.

14.01.2022 And did you know that Elspeth Dean later became Mother Superior of the Anglican Community of the Holy Name, located at Retreat House in Cheltenham??? How interesting!

12.01.2022 First in a series: Reminiscing with the past! Did you know that the school was first established by Miss Frances Lowe in 1903 in a house at the corner of Sherwood Road and Marshall St in Ivanhoe. Miss Lowe called her school "Cooerwull".

12.01.2022 Miss Marion Valerie Beers was the Principal in 1969 and 1970. The next Principal was Mr Glyn France, who was Principal from 1971 - 1977. Mr France was noted for broadening the curriculum and improving the academic results.

11.01.2022 Continuing our series: Negotiations between Miss Lowe and the St James' Vestry for the transition of Cooerwull from a private girls' school to a fully recognised Church of England School continued over a number of years. In 1922 the school was purchased from Miss Lowe. The school commenced as Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School in February 1923 with 99 students.

11.01.2022 Continuing the reminiscences: In the following years the school was led by Miss Bevington (until 1926), Miss Bedford (1927) and Miss Knox (1928). During this time a student named Elspeth Dean and her sister Hazel attended the school. Are there any Elspeth Dean Award winners out there? The Elspeth Dean Memorial Prize is awarded each year by the Old Grammarians' Association.

10.01.2022 In 1945 the School Magazine reports that on 5 May the opening of the Junior School Building occurred. This was important as there was such a shortage of space that the Parish Hall had been used for classes. Who remembers the Junior School in its original location?

10.01.2022 Reunions postponed: Friday 17 April. Class of 1985 and Class of 1990.

07.01.2022 Do you recall Mrs Hurry, who taught Craft? There was a proposal in 1963 to establish a course to assist in the training of new Craft teachers at the School. 03.01.2022 Miss Pike was the Principal from 1963 - 1968. This followed Miss Walker, who was the Headmistress for 33 years. Miss Pike introduced some new ideas to the school. One of these was the teaching of Home Economics. Who remembers their Home Eco classes ???

03.01.2022 Mary Vinnecombe worked at the School from 1929 until she passed away in 1954. In this time she taught Geography and was extensively involved with other programs, including editing the School Magazine, which in 1953 was renamed the Golden Mitre. Mary Vinnecombe was also the first Oswald House mistress. Another of her important roles was to look after the school projector.

02.01.2022 Here is a contribution from Esther. It is a poem written about Martin Troy. We thank Esther for this contribution. In memoriam: Martin Troy Morning, love! Oh, morning, Martin! How does your garden grow?... His blue, red and yellow roses stand Quite spritely, all in a row. The Junior School, the teacher on duty Stops to take in the smell, Of freshly pruned trees and bushes, clipped Before turning inside, at the bell. The girls are a-playing with buckets and spades While Martin makes his way round; They chatter and wave at a friendly face Standing side by side with a mound Of mulch, of spawning, nourished soil By Martins own pair of hands, He distributes the fertile food for the plants And tends with a lively command. The rose garden blooms in the springtime, And the teachers are treated in turn To their own petalled rose, as a gesture From a man always showing concern For the wellbeing of students and nature, For the staff and the parents and friends, Who visit on days and take in with awe The gardens he lovingly tends. On hot summer days, near the gym in the school, Girls gather and stutter and shout, For the cool lemon icy poles, raspberry, too Our Martin distributes about. The same in July at the birthday Of Ivanhoe Girls every year, Chocolate cake comes, and girls snake around For a slice and a hug and a cheer. Always so conscious, aware and in motion A beloved and dedicated chum, For 32 years he created a world, All praise for his natural green thumb. While tragedy struck in Januarys heat Its only so fittingly so, That Martin did leave us, a peaceful, proud man In the grounds of his dear Ivanhoe. A treasure, a master, a man of his trade, In overalls green, he did stand; Well all miss that smile in the morning, Our Martin, the King of the Land.

01.01.2022 Continuing the series. Information based on a previously published text: "Pictures of a School". In 1907, when the pupils numbered thirty-six, Miss Lowe leased and later purchased the property "Hillsley" at the corner of Noel St and Upper Heidelberg Road.
