25.01.2022 Imitation, or the ability to copy others, is an important skill for children to develop. It helps them to learn to do the things they see others doing, and learn new words and ultimately communicate. Many of us as adults also learn from watching then doing. Imitation is a gradual process that is critical for learning to talk, play, interact with others and make sense of the world around us. But did you know that imitation begins as a baby? * Newborns imitate facial expressi...ons, * at 3-4 months babies start to imitate sounds, * after 6 months babies start to imitate actions like holding a bottle or pushing a ball * around 9-12 months babies start to imitate using simple toys like putting a block in a box, * around 12 months toddlers imitate gestures such as waving, pointing, and clapping, * at this time they also start to imitate words If your child is late to talk, have a look at their interactions with you and see whether they are imitating your facial expressions, sounds, gestures, and routines in songs and play. 24.01.2022 It is R U Ok day. This is so important right now during this difficult time. As parents we are busy worrying about our kids who are struggling with being at home; our parents, some of whom can’t get the support we’d like to give them; our family and friends; and the wider community. It can be a lot of worry to carry alone and sometimes we forget to check in on how we are feeling. Perhaps today is a good opportunity to stop and take time to think about how we are true my feeling in these unprecedented & difficult times. If someone asks you RUOK? Take the opportunity to look after yourself and acknowledge if you’re finding it tough.

23.01.2022 Praise and encouragement boosts self-esteem, confidence, and makes kids feel good about themselves. During a busy day we often forget to give praise and may find ourselves providing more negative feedback than positive. We want to ensure we provide at least 4:1 four positives to every negative. Praise needs to be specific, not just good boy or good girl. Kids like to hear exactly what they did, or said, that was good. This helps them recognise what the positive behaviou...r is so they can repeat it. They are more likely to repeat behaviour that earns consistent praise. For example: I like the way you unpacked your school bag and threw the rubbish in the bin; That was really kind to ask how your sister felt; Its great how you asked for ..politely, I love it when you say please; Well done finding a tidy spot for all your toys to go away neatly. It is also great to provide praise or encouragement for effort, even if the end result isnt exactly what you wanted. For example: Im proud of how much effort you put into sounding out the words, You worked so hard on that piece of work, well done, That took a lot of courage to start the new class, Im proud of you and your courage. Try to make your praise dependent on your childs behaviour, rather than your feelings. You might find that the more you look for good behaviour to praise, the more positive youll feel (and the more good behaviour youll see).

23.01.2022 Just finished listening to this podcast. Some really valuable tips for those working on literacy. Posted @withregram @speechpathaus This week on the podcast, Anneke Flinn from chats to Alison Clarke about the important role speech pathologists play in literacy intervention, including useful resources. #speechpathaus #SpeakUp4CommRights #communication #SLPeeps #slp2b #ECSLP #slt #slt2b #slp #slpbloggers #language #speech #voice #fluency #speechpathology #speechtherapy #signlanguage #StandUp4HumanRights #WeSpeechies #disability #NDIS #blogging #podcast #stuttering #education #learning #professionaldevelopment #tbi #functionalassessment

22.01.2022 First day of online sessions: I have had so much fun. I cant believe how engaged the kids have been. We have worked on speech sounds, literacy skills and receptive and expressive language. 22.01.2022 I am so excited to be back in the studio offering face to face sessions. After half a day of cleaning and (sadly) putting away toys that cant be easily cleaned, the studio is ready. I am really looking forward to seeing all the families again.

22.01.2022 Happy St Patricks Day. Weve built a Leprechaun Trap, full of gold, and are hoping to catch a Leprechaun tonight. Hope he likes the bed inside and the snacks weve provided. Not sure what well do with him if we catch one May the luck of the Irish be with you on St Paddys Day. #stpatricksday Patricksday #ivanhoevillage #earlychildhoodeducation #melbournekids #crafting

20.01.2022 Sequencing skills is the ability to logically order language, thoughts, information and actions. We take these skills for granted in everyday life eg when completing your to do list, when stacking the dishwasher, when getting dressed. Kids learn basic sequencing skills early on and they continue to develop over time. Difficulties with sequencing can result in difficulties with a number of skills: Sequencing skills are important for children of all ages. It allows them to:... *Understand patterns in the world so as to make sense of it *Ordering speech sounds to talk or sing *Play with figurines/dolls and act a familiar scene *Organised themselves to follow daily routines *Dress themselves correctly *Get ready for school *Playing a game with others *Follow spoken or written directions *Be able to predict what will happen next *Write a word, sentence or whole story *Tell a story in logical order *Follow maths equations *Understand how to tell the time *Follow the storyline in a book or TV *Learning to code The language we use includes: first, next, then, last, firstly, secondly, thirdly, finally, beginning, middle, end, before, after, small, medium, big, bigger, biggest etc. #manninghammums #darebinmums #nillumbikwithkids #banyulenillumbikkids #ivanhoevillage #ivanhoe #melbourne #localbusiness #earlychildhoodeducation

20.01.2022 Give your self-permission to leave the to do list aside for a period of time each day, and play with your kids. If you cant find a small chunk of time, take small breaks to interact, play and connect with your kids. Our lives these days just seem so busy. Often we go through each day with a long to do list and find ourselves never having enough time to do everything, creating pressure, stress and often frustration. We can get so busy trying to conquer the to do list ...that we forget to prioritise our children and just play with them. Playing together is not only beneficial for children but research shows that playing helps adults reduce/relieve stress, improves brain function, stimulates the mind, provides exercise, improves relationships and can even make you feel young again. For children the benefits are learning team work, social skills, cooperation, turn taking, new language, and of course improved relationships with their family. #ivanhoe #ivanhoevillage #speechtherapy #childdevelopment #mumlife #earlyliteracy #earlydevelopment #rosanna #alphington See more

20.01.2022 The key to successful speech therapy is the child and their parents. A huge Well Done to all the parents and the kids who have worked hard over the past year to achieve their speech, language and literacy goals As a Speech Pathologist my role is to provide parents and caregivers with all the knowledge, skills and resources to practice their child's speech goals at home. Parents are integral in setting the child's goals, identifying challenges and track...ing the success, as they know their child the best. Within the sessions the children, parents and I play together so parents can carry over the activities at home. I give parents the knowledge, written information and resources (picture cards, activity sheets, games) to carry on the practice at home. If you are not having the opportunity to see what your child is doing in speech therapy, or don't know how to work through the goals at home, your child's progress will be slow. The key to success is the child and their parents. #manninghammums #darebinmums #numbikwithkids #ivanhoemums #banyulenilumbikkids #ivanhoevillage #ivanhoe #melbourne #localbusiness #earlychildhood #eastivanhoevillage #eaglemont #banyulebusiness #darebinbusiness #earlyintervention #childdevelopment #toddlertips #toddlerhacks #languagedevelopment #playbasedlearning #earlyintervention #receptivelanguage #expressivelanguage

19.01.2022 I have just finished Accidental Counsellor offered online over 3 nights with psychologists from Life Line. Many people have struggled with recent restrictions in Melbourne and felt extremely isolated from family, friends and their local community. In addition distant learning at home has created additional stresses for many families. As a Speech Pathologist I often get to hear about these daily challenges families face. This course has helped me refresh my listening skills t...o be able to further support my families. If you, or anyone you know is struggling, don’t forget Life Line is a free call : 13 11 14 #manninghammums #darebinmums #numbikwithkids #ivanhoemums #banyulenilumbikkids #ivanhoevillage #ivanhoe #melbourne #localbusiness #earlychildhood #eastivanhoevillage #eaglemont #banyulebusiness #darebinbusiness

19.01.2022 Learning about repeated patterns. First was recording shadows throughout the day on a piece of paper, then we used the Spirograph, then we used a Creator kit to make this battery powered device that draws repeated circles. Then we did repeated patterns with coding (well I didnt, my daughter & husband did). Now weve got to find some repeating patterns in nature.

19.01.2022 This is important information if you have any concerns about your little one. If you have concerns talk to your little ones teacher or seek assessment by a qualified professional

19.01.2022 This lock down feels harder than the last. The school age kids are struggling with motivation for learning at home and their parents are tired from nagging; the preschoolers just want to go to the park; the parents with new bubs feel like they are missing out on sharing their beautiful bubs with family & friends and all of us want to go back to normality. Stay strong, we will get through this together.

18.01.2022 An early Christmas present for me to celebrate finishing my online training for certification in Sounds Write. Loving these decodable readers and Victorian cursive letters to support literacy skill development. ... Sounds Write is a systematic linguistics phonics approach to teaching children to read and write. It beings with the sounds in out spoken language and moves from the sounds to the written word (not written word to the sounds). Conceptual knowledge required for reading and writing: * all sounds are represented (encoded) by symbols; * each sounds may be represented (spelled) by a 1, 2, 3 or 4 letter spelling. * sounds may be spelled in more than one way. *many spellings represent more than one sound. Three key skills required to read and write: *blending, *segmenting * manipulation of sounds in words.

18.01.2022 It has been a difficult year and it seems that the end of the school year is just as challenging for tired kids and parents alike. Be kind to yourselves, your kids, and others as the end is school year rolls around and Christmas planning intensifies.

18.01.2022 Good luck to all the parents starting home schooling Wednesday. What I have learnt from home schooling so far: *A structured timetable makes a huge difference, *Try to keep each session around 40 min, 20 30 min breaks with physical activity between sessions helps concertation, *A reward (strong reinforcer) at the end of the day helps motivation (I use time on technology),... *Use a motivator chart. Get 1 star for good effort per session. Earn 4-5 stars for the end of day reward, *No technology during the day (unless it is schooling). It can be hard to drag the kids off and get them to refocus, *Pack a lunchbox with snacks then at lunch time send the kids off for a picnic/outside and have an hour to yourself, *Start the day with exercise (online or outside) to get their brains and bodies ready, *Expect your kids to treat you as they would treat their class teacher expect respect, *Some lessons sent by the teacher may need you to provide a lot of teaching, others will be easy, *Be kind to yourself. Teaching at home can be hard work. No one expects perfection, *Some days will be great, others will be challenging thats ok, everyone else is having hard days too, *Do something for yourself, if possible, free from kids interrupting, ******Have some wine ready at the end of the day (most important)**********+*+++ See more

17.01.2022 Happy international womens day - I want to make a special call out to all the amazing mums, grandmothers, aunties, sisters, & friends who fight everyday for their children who have special needs.

17.01.2022 For those of you who have kids struggling with this period of staying at home: You are not alone. Many families are finding their kids behavior has deteriorated, they are anxious, feeling a bit lonely, or for the younger ones, confused as to why they cant go to the park. Learning at home also hasnt been easy for many families. Hopefully this resource might help. Check it out.

16.01.2022 Chalk fun with physical activity

12.01.2022 Let us not forget those courageous people who left the safety and comfort of their homes to fight for justice & human rights overseas. Let us also remember their families and friends at home who lived with hope that their loved ones would return to them unharmed.

12.01.2022 Today (8 September) is International Literacy Day. The theme for International Literacy Day in 2020 is ‘Literacy teaching and learning in the #COVID19 crisis and beyond’. As professionals in supporting children with communication difficulties, speech pathologists are a key part of any literacy team. This is because speech pathologists understand the importance of literacy and the clear link that exists between language, speech and reading. Strong oral language skills (including speaking and listening skills) underpin the ability to read.

11.01.2022 On those cold rainy days, get some exercise indoors by building an obstacle course. Use anything you can find such as pillows, cushions, chairs, boxes, books, hoola-hoops, blankets. Use your imaginations and pretend you are in a dog show, horse show, a dragon fighting evils, a fairy flying over the land.anything your child can think of. You can build in language by asking your child to go over, under, around, in, out, next to, through and expand by saying first, next, last. This is great for learning new language and concentrating and attending to verbal directions. Most importantly have fun!

10.01.2022 Wishing you all a safe and happy Easter. This is my familys bunny Little Peter who is enjoying eating the pot plants which I brought home from my studio.

09.01.2022 I had a really fun online session today with a wonderful 4 year old. He told me he had been practicing his speech homework and progressed to show me how good his hoola -hooping was. I think he thought I had been teaching him hoola hoop skills

09.01.2022 I seem to have forgotten a lot of information I learnt as a child

07.01.2022 I’m hoping all the kids who returned to school this week are doing well, and not missing their parents too much . 06.01.2022 This a FREE app that may be good for little ones learning to read or those early readers who are struggling.

06.01.2022 The Floor is Lava This has been so popular since I’ve returned to the studio. There are a few versions 1. Normal floor is lava 2. Chase someone around the obstacle course- first one to touch the other person’s back wins....but listen out for the call of ‘reverse’ 3. Pick up an object from the hoops when they are called eg. Farm animal, book, vehicle. First one to get all four objects and back to the start wins ... What ideas can I add to this?? #manninghammums #darebinmums #numbikwithkids #ivanhoemums #banyulenilumbikkids #ivanhoevillage #ivanhoe #melbourne #earlychildhood #eastivanhoevillage #eaglemont #banyulebusiness #speechpathology #gamesforkids

04.01.2022 Late talkers are children between the ages of 18 30 mths who have a reduced vocabulary and sentence structure for what is expected for their age. They may also have a reduced understanding of language and use a smaller repertoire of speech sounds compared to peers. All other skills are developing normally such as play skills, social skills, motor skills and thinking skills. *18 months uses less than 20 words *24 months less than 50 words and no two word combinations (Paul 1...991; Rescorla, 1989) Late talkers may be at risk for developing language and/or literacy difficulties as they age. It is recommended if you are concerned that you get a speech pathology assessment.

04.01.2022 Were about to give this a go this morning (the recorded one from yesterday as I think its UK time). A great way to start a daily routine. I will however be wearing my PJs

03.01.2022 This is sound advice. If your child suddenly starts to stutter, and it lasts longer than 2-3 months, or comes and goes throughout the week, it is worth seeking a speech pathologists opinion. If there is a family history of stuttering, children are at more risk of developing life long stuttering if it is not treated early. https://theconversation.com/the-most-important-thing-for-a-

02.01.2022 This is truly beautiful and hopefully provides some cheer in this difficult time.

02.01.2022 Love these guys:Drs Chris and Xand van Tulleken of CBBCs Operation Ouch. If your kids are feeling worried, watch this together and discuss. Longer version on Newsrounds website here https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/51861089

02.01.2022 Ivanhoe Speech Therapy is now providing fun and flexible online sessions. It is important to us that families stay safe and healthy and sadly our studio is temporarily closed. Online sessions will involve playing lots of fun interactive games in the comfort of your own home (inside or outside). The benefits of online sessions include:... Convenience find a time that works with your family routine Monday Friday 10am-6pm; Continuing with your speech therapy or classroom goals; Interacting with someone else while at home; Breaking up any boredom that has crept in; Having something to look forward to; Preparing your child for a future where teleconferencing is the norm; Helping to support my small business in these desperate times. I can also provide creative & fun ideas on how to tackle home-schooling. Ive spent a week practicing on my daughter and we had a lot of fun. Call me today to find out how online sessions will work for you. 0439392329

02.01.2022 I encourage every parent to read to their child daily, right up to grade 6 ( unless they wont let you any more). Reading to your child helps you connect, share a common interest, have something to look forward to doing together, and models the enjoyment that can be derived from reading. If you read a book that is slightly above your childs reading abilities, it will help them with new vocabulary, knowledge about the world around them, grammatical structures, inferences, ...predictions and a better understanding about the structure of narratives. This in turn assists reading comprehension and written skills, particularly if you discuss what you have read and what may happen next. This organization ReadAloud has some great free information and resources. https://www.read aloud.org/July2018/DisconnecttoConnect_parenthandout.jpg

02.01.2022 Physical activity within a speech therapy session is crucial to support learning for children of all ages. This is especially true for children who have been sitting at school all day, younger children who do not yet have the motor skills to sit still, children who prefer physical activity over more stationary activities such as reading, colouring and drawing and children whose concentration is poor. Movement does however benefit all children. Studies show that children who... are more active demonstrate better focus and concentration, faster cognitive processing (thinking skills), and more successful memory retention than children who spend a lot of time sitting still. Further studies show that movement and exercise improves alertness, attention and motivation, and helps to build new brain cells to help store, recall and understand information. This is particularly important in speech therapy when children are learning new sounds, vocabulary, language structure and function, literacy skills, play skills and socialisation skills. These wobble cushions are excellent to keep children moving in a session and refocus their energies into learning. I have found children of all ages, and sometimes their parents, really enjoy using them as stepping stones and challenging themselves to get all the way around the room without touching the ground.

01.01.2022 To all the mums, step mums, grandmas, aunties, and mother figures providing love and care to others, have a wonderful day. May you feel appreciated and loved.
