24.01.2022 Christmas food guide - know what is safe for your hound! With all that yummy festive food around, we want your hound to be safe. RAWHIDE IS NOT SAFE - PLEASE LEAVE THEM IN THE SHOPS... Rawhide is NOT made of dehydrated meat and it is NOT a by-product of the beef industry. Rawhide is a highly processed by-product of the leather industry. It’s usually made from cows, but depending on the country it’s manufactured, pigs, sheep, horses etc. could be used. First, the hide is preserved with a chemical bath to stop the skin from degrading before it can be processed. Next, the hides are soaked and treated with either an ash-lye solution or a sodium sulphide lime to remove the hair and fat. Then, more chemicals are added that puff the hide and make it easier to split into layers. The top grain is made into leather products, while the inner soft part of the hide is used to make rawhide treats. The inner layer of hide is washed in bleach, hydrogen peroxide or chemicals to remove the smell of rotten leather and whiten it. Finally, they are flavoured, coloured and made into festive shapes. This often involves coatings of chemicals, including titanium oxide and sodium benzoate. Rawhide isn’t digestible (in fact, it can swell up in your dog’s stomach) and larger pieces can get stuck your dog’s oesophagus or other parts of their digestive tract causing choking or intestinal blockages. Please leave rawhide in the shop where it belongs or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away for later, then dispatch in the bin! If you want to try something your hounds will LOVE, remember IWaG's partnership with Pluto and Ally Treatery where you can purchase scrumptious treats without wheat fillers, added sodium and other preservatives. https://www.plutoandallytreatery.com References: The Dangers of Rawhide Chews for Dogs (Vet-Approved Advice) (petful.com) Rawhide Bones: The Good, The Bad And The Downright Dangerous CanineJournal.com Why Rawhide Is Dangerous For Your Dog! | Dogs Naturally (dogsnaturallymagazine.com) The Dangers of Rawhide Dog Chew Toys | The Bark

23.01.2022 Happy Hound in Home Update - Alley Tentative little Alley took a while to come out of her shell and bond with her foster Dad, but his patient commitment paid off and when he adopted her in May, he told us "she's a different dog". Six months later, and Alley's Dad says she's grown in confidence.... Alley loves Mr Lion, a toy that she carries around the house, and patiently puts up with her playful cousin - a Rottweiler puppy. Alley also has a cheeky side that's starting to emerge. She gets on the lounge when her Dad's out and thinks he doesn't know and she's just started getting on his bed when she think's he's not watching! Alley's Dad told us she is always by his side and "It's me and Alley forever". Thinking about adding a greyhound to your family? 22.01.2022 Handsome blue brindle boy, Joey, has been adopted. Joey was fostered in Hervey Bay, so it was a long drive back to Brisbane for Joey and his new Dad but they were all smiles. Joey had a good first nights sleep before deciding 5am was enough of a sleep in.... Yesterday, Joey enjoyed playing with his new squeaky toys for a while before disappearing. When his Dad went looking he found Joey in the bedroom....on the human bed! Greyt work Joey. Congratulations Joey! Thinking about adding a greyhound to your family? 19.01.2022 Handsome big black boy, Davey, has been adopted after just 2 weeks in foster care! Davey had a couple of meet and greets with his new family, which includes greyhounds Axel and Storm, and they couldn't wait to welcome him into their home. His new Mum told us Davey's a beautiful boy inside and out.... Davey spent the morning giving lots of kisses and carrying his toys around the house before settling down in the bedroom for a nap with Axel, Storm and his new Dad. Then it was time for a walk so he could meet the neighbours and share some snuggles. For the post walk nap, Davey didn't hesitate to join Storm on Mum and Dad's bed. Congratulations Davey! 14.01.2022 Handsome fawn boy, Yogi, has been adopted. As a senior boy, Yogi was a bit unsettled when he first arrived in foster care, eating little and struggling to conquer stairs. However, with the help of his foster families, including other hounds, Yogi has come so far. He loves the smells coming out of the kitchen, so much so he will try to join in and 'help'. Yogi is a super affectionate and loving boy who loves cuddle time. He's a greyt listener who almost always does what he's a...sked. Yogi's forever family celebrated his adoption with a new martingale collar before he jumped into the car and made himself very comfortable for the trip to his forever home! Congratulations Yogi! 13.01.2022 IWaG has two lovely girls needing 'foster to adopt' homes as soon as possible. Molly and Xena are affectionate black girls who are sadly experiencing serious separation anxiety. Each girl needs a special home where they can receive the support they need to gain confidence and independence. Molly and Xena need homes where:... - They are only dogs, - At least one adult, or dog savvy older teenager, is home all the time, - A family member, friend or neighbour can dog sit if all members of the home need to go out. IWaG will provide Molly and Xena's families with specialist separation anxiety training from Vanessa Jones of Ruff Diamonds Dog Services. Training is conducted remotely, so there's no need to travel, however, you will need to participate in Zoom meetings and have the ability to: - Record Molly/Xena when you leave the room (there are apps available to do this), - Record training sessions and send them to Vanessa. Separation Anxiety In Dogs Decoded training requires a commitment of at least 8 weeks and will include: - An initial 1 hour Zoom assessment, - Daily training plans that you will need to video each day and send to Vanessa, - A weekly, half hour Zoom call. Click on the photos of our beautiful girls for more information on each. If you think you could help Molly or Xena, please give IWaG a call on 0421 298 970. 08.01.2022 Gorgeous black boy Moe joined the IWaG family on Sunday when he arrived at his foster home. It was a huge day for Moe and his foster family who drove from Gatton to Lismore to pick him up. After lots of exploring and sniffing in the yard at his foster home, it was time for dinner. Moe had restless first night, but his foster Dad said he had a much more settled second night. Moe's foster Mum told us "He's warming up to us nicely and is proving to be quite the goof ball".... 07.01.2022 It's heating up in SEQ with forecast temperatures over 30 degrees. As well as air temperature, it’s important to keep in mind the humidity level and ground temperature when deciding if it’s safe to walk your hound. Even if it is pleasant for us, your dog is closer to the hot ground, meaning their body can heat up more quickly.... At just 25 degrees outside, asphalt can reach 52 degrees and skin can burn in just one minute at that temperature. Test the surface temperature before allowing your dog to walk on it by placing your hand flat on the surface. If you can’t comfortably hold it there for 5 to 10 seconds, then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Keep in mind that surfaces such as asphalt and concrete soak up heat all day and only cool at a certain rate after sunset, meaning they could still be too hot for your dog to walk on in the evening. Natural grass is the coolest surface for your dog to walk on, while synthetic grass is one of the hottest. It’s also important to monitor your dog during a walk for signs of discomfort. Even if you have tested the ground surface, your dog could be telling you it’s too hot for them if they are: walking differently, walking faster or slower, pulling towards another surface eg from footpath onto the grass limping, stopping to lick their paws. Dogs don’t always know their limits, so be careful to end the walk before they overheat. Signs of overheating include: excessive panting or salivation, rapid or difficulty breathing. After a walk, ensure your dog has a sheltered, cool place to rest and plenty of fresh water. Dogs cool down from bottom to top, that is from their feet up, so you can help cool them down by wiping or spraying water on their feet, stomach, chest and under their armpits. If you think your hound (or any of your fur-family) is suffering from heat stroke, contact your vet immediately. Signs of heatstroke include: excessive panting or salivation, rapid or difficulty breathing. appearing confused, a lack of co-ordination, weakness, glazed eyes, vomiting or diarrhea.
