24.01.2022 Our thoughts are with the loved ones of Hannah Clarke and her three beautiful children - Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey - who will be laid to rest in Brisbane today Last Friday at our IWD Luncheon, Chair Vicki Tiegs dedicated her speech to remembering the lives of Hannah and her children, and had this powerful message for us all: "Lets not mention the names of the people who perpetrated these unspeakable acts. Lets keep saying the names of the women and children who lost their lives. Remember their names. Speak their names. Hopefully the next name we have to say, isnt a loved one or someone we know."
23.01.2022 Maggie Sydenham is the winner of our Beryl Lewis Scholarship for Older Women in 2020! At 77, Maggie has held numerous occupations in a 50-year working life, mostly in health and the arts. She even self-published her book Getting Older, Getting Better, a light-hearted self-help book for seniors Maggie is planning to use this scholarship to continue her studies, pursuing an Honours and a PhD. ... 18.01.2022 The inspiring Denise Willis was awarded the Aunty Mary Davis Scholarship for Indigenous Women this year Denise is a proud indigenous women who has worked with the Illawarra Aboriginal community for more than 35 years. Speaking about her work as the Aboriginal Education Officer at Illawarra High School where shes supported many indgenous students to complete the HSC and go onto further education, Denise said: ... 17.01.2022 This year, our winner of the Kerryn McCann Scholarship for Women (Sports) is Sarah Carli Sarah has been motivated by Olympian Kerryn McCann since she spoke at a Little Athletics in Wollongong when Sarah was just 12. "I will always remember Kerryn saying that she never won many races until she was 17 or 18. Knowing you dont always have to win everything when you are really young to be a successful athlete is something that I have always kept with me." ... In 2011, at 16, Sarah placed second in the womens 400m hurdles at the World Youth Championships. 13.01.2022 Each year at our annual IWD event, the Illawarra Mercury’s amazing Sylvia Liber photographs the event. Today we congratulate Sylvia on winning her 5th Walkley for her photo titled ‘Strength and Resilience’. The winning photo is part of the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre’s upcoming exhibition of Sylvia’s full Strength and Resilience photo essay. ... The exhibition launch will be held on Wednesday, 25th of November and is the catalyst for a campaign to establish an Australian first Domestic and Family Violence Trauma Recovery centre. Congrats Sylvia and well done Illawarra Mercury for getting behind the campaign!

07.01.2022 The IWD Creative Spirit 2020 Scholarship was awarded to Corrine (Kittie) Zingler-Hunprhies In 2015, Kittie began making dolls under the name Kittipilla. Despite facing health struggles, she remained dedicated to her craft. Through her work she has helped to raise awareness of Endometriosis by creating Maneki-Neko (Lucky Cats); raised funds for Save the Tasmanian Devil Project with her Australian native Travel Buddies; worked with Mindful Generations and ITSOWEL to help cre...ate the Italian Sensory kit for locals with dementia; and raised funds for WIRES during the NSW bushfires. 06.01.2022 We love to see Illawarra locals doing amazing things Rose Valley resident Maria Baden has been featured in Ros Horins new documentary Rosemarys Way. The film follows Keyan-born Rosemary Kariuki as she empowers migrant women out of cultural silos to connect with each other and the wider Australian society. Maria lives and works with her husband on a Wagyu beef farm and hosts some of the migrant women in the film. ... She said the film gives voice to those on the margins; voices we are barely aware of in mainstream Australia. The film has also been announced as a finalist for the 2020 Documentary Australia Foundation Award as part of the 67th Sydney Film Festival: Virtual Edition & Awards

04.01.2022 This year, the Cate Stevenson Scholarship (Education, Business and Community Service) was awarded to Beatrice Kabahire and Anastazia Niyitunga Both of these women were forced to flee their homes in Zambia and Burundi to refugee camps. The duo knew the difficulties many other local women from refugee camps face in achieving employment, and devised the idea of starting their own cleaning business. Today, their businesses now provides work opportunities to 8 women, 7 of whom ...are from a refugee background We couldnt think of more deserving winners. 04.01.2022 At this year’s IWD event, we introduced our warrior woman and Committee member Angie Howes who had been through cancer and gone into remission. Not long after our event, Angie received the news that cancer had returned. Today she is doing well with only a couple more chemo sessions to go. She is passionate about sharing her experience so others monitor their health and agreed to be the 2020 Relay for Life Ambassador with her amazing son Oscar.
