05.01.2022 6 Things to know about engineered hardwood flooring Why would I choose engineered timber flooring? Engineered boards have been designed to minimise the inherent problems of solid wood, namely the expansion and contraction that causes bowing and cupping.... Is an engineered wood floor cheaper than solid wood? Probably a bit, if you compare the completed cost of the job that is by the time you install, sand, stain, finish a solid comparable species on site. Engineered typically comes prefinished. Can I lay engineered boards over concrete? Direct stick over concrete slab is the most typical floor installation we come across with our engineered boards. If the moisture content is more than 5.5 per cent, a waterproof membrane is recommended; and if the deviation is more than +/-3mm over a 3 metre radius, a self-leveling compound may be required. Grinding of the slab or ply sheeting are alternative solutions. Will I be able to sand and recoat? Engineered boards come in multiple thicknesses so if you want to sand your floors back Id recommend the thickest lamella at 6mm. You could get about 20 refinish sands out of that. If you want to change the whole colour of the board you need to sand more deeply so you may get three to four sands. How easy is it to install? Installation is similar to that of solid wood, typically glue and secret nail. Engineered boards also come with a click system that locks the boards together and allows them to be floated over a foam mat. Installation over an acoustic membrane is often a solution for apartment owners who need to adhere to body corporate rules on noise reduction.
