16.01.2022 The ATO has announced that it will be closely examining claims for work-related car expenses this tax time as part of a broader focus on work-related expenses. The ATO is particularly concerned about taxpayers claiming for things they are not entitled to, such as private trips, trips they didnt make, and car expenses that their employer paid for or reimbursed. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said more than 3.75 million people made a work-related car expense claim in 201...6-17, totalling about $8.8 billion. Each year approximately 870,000 people claimed the maximum amount under the cents-per-kilometre. The ATO is concerned that some taxpayers mistakenly believe that this is a standard deduction they are entitled to, without needing to provide any evidence of having travelled that distance, or even having undertaken any travel at all. The Assistant Commissioner said that the ATOs ability to identify claims that are unusual has improved due to enhancements in technology and data analytics. 10.01.2022 Did you know superannuation contributions need to be listed on pay slips? Its a common error we see. Pay slips need to include: the amount of super contribu...tions made during the pay period (or the contribution amount that needs to be made) the name and/or number of the superannuation fund the contributions were made to. If youre an employer, dont forget that staff didnt give me their super fund details isnt an excuse for not meeting these obligations. Under the superannuation guarantee, employers have to pay super contributions of 9.5% of an employees ordinary time earnings when an employee is paid $450 or more before tax in a month and is: over 18 years, or under 18 years and works over 30 hours a week. This applies to full-time and part-time employees and some casual employees, and includes temporary residents. Remember while superannuation needs to be on each pay slip, it has to be paid at least every 3 months. Find out more https://www.fairwork.gov.au/pay/tax-and-superannuation
