23.01.2022 The 14th-20th of July is Diabetes Awareness week. Diabetes affects 1.2 million Australians aged 18 years and over and is most common in men living in rural and remote areas, such as Griffith. There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes ... Type two diabetes is the most common condition I see in my clinic and the most prevalent form of diabetes found in the world, accounting for 85% of all cases of diabetes, so this is what Ill be focusing on in todays article. What is Type Two Diabetes? According to Diabetes Australia, Type Two Diabetes is diagnosed when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, the insulin you do produce doesnt work effectively or your body doesnt respond to insulin effectively (insulin resistance). It develops over a long period of time and can often go undetected for years. It is estimated that one in every four Australians with Type 2 diabetes dont even know they have it. Who is at risk of Type Two Diabetes? There are a number of reasons someone may be at high risk of diabetes, this includes having a family history of diabetes, being over the age of 55 years, having high blood pressure or overweight, being of pacific island, Indian or Chinese backgrounds or have been previously diagnosed with poly cystic ovarian syndrome. How do I reduce my risk of Type Two Diabetes? You can reduce your risk of diabetes by maintaining a healthy weight, doing regular physical activity, making healthier food choices, maintaining your blood pressure and cholesterol level and not smoking. These can be challenging to do alone so talk to your health care professional who can help guide you through these changes. See more

21.01.2022 Bread and gluten is often demonised in the media as being the cause of all health conditions and inflammation, but this isnt the case. What is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat, rye, spelt and barley. ... It is the part of flour that makes dough elastic and helps bread to rise; this is why gluten free products are often dense. Should you avoid gluten? No, you shouldnt avoid gluten unless you have coeliac disease; gluten sensitivity or a doctor or dietitian has recommended a gluten free diet for a specific health reason. But I become bloated when I have bread, it has to be the gluten This is the most common myth I bust in my clinic, a lot of people wrongly self-diagnose themselves as gluten sensitive but in actual fact they have a sensitivity to Fructan. Fructan is a FODMAP, which is a short chain carbohydrate that is poorly absorbed by the gut in some people. This means that this carbohydrate molecule travels down to the lower GI tract and is fermented by our gut bacteria, which produce gas, bloating and other IBS like symptoms. How do I know? It is important that if you suspect something is going on with your gut, you talk to your GP. They will rule out any serious medical issues, such as coeliac disease and refer you to a Dietitian for a low FODMAP diet, were your dietitian will be able to lead you through the process and help find out exactly what you are reacting too. The most important thing is that you dont follow a Low FODMAP diet for greater than 4 months as it can negatively influence your healthy gut bacteria. In summery, grains that contain \gluten can be an important source of vitamins, minerals, fibre and resistant starch and shouldnt be avoided unless medically recommended. See more

18.01.2022 I have a lot of people in my life with Coeliac Disease (not just clients, but family too) and trying to find a good gluten free pasta is a mission! This gluten free pasta is a combination of rice and maize flour. It cooks really well, it won't turn to mush if you over cook it slightly, like I so often do. It is suitable for people on a low FODMAP diet or suffering from wheat allergies or coeliac disease. ... Nutritionally, it's similar to normal wheat pasta. I wouldn't recommend having it everyday but it sure hits the spot when you want pasta and cant have the traditional gluten containing pasta. See more

A recent study tested the immediate impact of music on self-reported mood and physiological markers (cortisol and EEG/brain waves) in clinically depressed individually found most peoples physiological markers (brainwaves and cortisol) improved almost instantly, even before the individuals reported feeling better themselves. . An additional study fo...und that talking to a music therapist weekly plus 30 minutes of prescribed music daily showed improvements in depression, distress, self-esteem and mood. . . 16.01.2022 Pineapples arent just delicious they are also the source of an important digestive enzyme BROMELAIN. Bromelain is sources from the pineapple core only and preliminary studies have shown it may have the ability to reduce swelling, bruising and pain associated with injury and surgery. It could also be useful in treating tendinitis, sprains and other muscle injuries. However its important to remember that canned or frozen pineapple pieces often have the core removed and therefore dont contain any of these amazing health benefiting enzyme; for this reason always choose fresh pineapple that hasnt been cored or juices made from the whole fruit including the stem.

15.01.2022 Sources of Zinc Seafood, lean meat, poultry, eggs, legumes whole grains and milk products are good sources of zinc, but red meat and oysters are the best sources of zinc. This is why vegetarian and vegans are at high risk of zinc deficiency. It is also important to remember that a number of cereals in Australia have been fortified with zinc, unfortunately, if a product has been fortified with a number of different vitamins and minerals, they often fight for absorption ...and arent that effective in increasing your zinc levels. Foods rich in Zinc Oysters, 100g - 20.25mg Sundried tomatoes, 50g - 7.5mg Lamb, 100g cooked 10mg Beef, 100g cooked 8.2mg Rice bubbles (fortified with zinc), 100g 7.8mg Cocoa powder, 20g 1.7mg Crab, 100g - 6.52mg Cashews, 50g 2.7mg Pine nuts, 50g 2.5mg Turkey, 100g cooked- 3.6mg Remember that this information is not to be used in place of a qualified health professional, please talk to your dietitian or GP before making any rapid diet changes. 13.01.2022 How strong was your coffee this morning? Winter makes keeping motivated hard sometimes, but keeping up regular habits is important for both your mind and body. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive try to keep your caffeine intake to less than 300mg per day (1 standard cafe style coffee or two instant cups). ... This also goes for men and women that are naturally a little more anxious or stressed then normal. Having greater than 300mg of caffeine often leads to an increase in foggy thinking, jitteriness and an inability to focus. 01.01.2022 In 2015 WAO recommended probiotic use in: A) Pregnant women at high risk of having children a hold with allergies. B) Women who are breast feeding a child at high risk of allergies. C) Infants at high risk of allergies. ... Why do we recommend probiotics in these women and children? - Studies have shown that consuming lactobacillus rhamnosus species in late pregnancy reduces the risk of the child developing atopic eczema by 22% -Studies have shown a promising benefit of L.reuteri DSM 17938 for breastfed infants with colic. Having this particular strain for 21-28 days significantly reduced crying episodes during the day. Probiotics during pregnancy still needs to be explored further and if you are considering taking a supplement please talk to your healthcare professional as they type and dose should be tailored to you. #dietitian #pharmacy #health #pregnancy #dietitian #nutrition #probiotics #needmoreevidence See more
