24.01.2022 Thank you for stopping by and supporting my new adventure. My new practice will be officially opening very soon. I am looking forward to bringing a dynamic and child centred practice to the Albury Wodonga region. I have expertise and completed further studies within the area of paediatric feeding including diagnosis of tongue, lip and cheek ties. I have completed studies in oral myology and have worked with premature infants through to adults in the areas of feeding, behavioural feeding and aversions as well as adult dysphagia. I look forward to sharing information regarding speech pathology, upcoming events, current research as well as little tips, tricks and guest posts along the way! Happy 2019 and again a warm welcome.

24.01.2022 Successful swallowing involves 26 muscles and 6 paired cranial nerves. It is crucial that all work in perfect harmony to successfully move food and fluids through our bodies. It is a complex task that is vital for nutrition and health.

23.01.2022 Feeding Tube Awareness Week (4th -8th February). Enteral feeding is where an infant or child requires partial or all of their nutrition through a tube. Tubes are either placed through their nose, mouth or stomach, the tube bypasses the oral pathways and is directly placed into the stomach or small intestine. Tube feeding can be used for a short period of time or for more sustained periods depending on why the tube is required. ... Some babies and children can have food through their mouth and through their tube. Having a feeding tube does not impact on a child’s physical activity. Children can still play, climb, roll and do the things other children love to do! Families and Carers can be trained to use a feeding tube. Formula, Breast milk and blended foods can all be nutrition sources for an enteral feeding tube. #tubefeeding #feedingtubeawarenessweek

23.01.2022 Yucky foods....?! What exactly are yucky foods? I teach the children and families I work with to respect all food and the places they hold in our diets. You may not enjoy a food based on many reasons including taste, texture, colour or past experience to name a few. However, labelling food as good, bad, yucky can allow unhealthy relationships with food to develop. I encourage children to explore all foods and label them in different ways such as colours or shapes. ... All foods have a place in your child’s life and restricting foods and labelling them can only exacerbate food relationship problems. Since when is cake yucky anyway??!

21.01.2022 The barely eaten lunch! Children are starting back at school and kinder this week. It might be a new experience for your child and this can impact on the amount of food they are consuming during their time at their learning space. It is completely okay if they haven’t touched anything or only eaten a small amount of food. ... It can be a new physical space, new or a larger amount of peers than previously experienced and new educators. This can increase little ones anxiety and when anxiety increases, appetite levels decrease. Here are some simple tips to navigate this transition period; Try not put pressure on your child to eat all of the food in their lunchbox. Try not have them finish the food in their lunchbox when they get home. Consider increasing breakfast quantity. Consider an earlier dinner or a healthy snack straight after school or kinder as they may be hungry when they get home. Continue to pack the foods you know your child generally enjoys and try not to ask what do you want in your lunchbox at this stage as they may feel like that food at that particular time but not another.

07.01.2022 Let’s chat about lunchboxes! Over the past few years there has been a huge increase in the variety of lunchboxes and food containers. Some are incredibly simple, others more complex. It can be overwhelming choosing new things for your children’s eating adventures. ... Consider if your child can open and close all of the containers, Including zips, clips and lids. Start preparing your child’s lunches in their lunchboxes now. Allow them plenty of time to become familiar and practice opening, closing and putting away their things. Show them what they typically may eat first. Consider the foods you know your child currently enjoys. If you know they like a vegemite sandwich, keep it consistent for them. Starting school can be a big enough adventure without changing their regular foods.
