25.01.2022 Wonderful news for all regional Victorians.
24.01.2022 Exciting stuff, right here in Ballarat from Gekko Systems.
23.01.2022 It’s good to be home.
23.01.2022 Melbourne’s laneways aren’t very busy right now, but the day will come when they burst back to life. And when they do, they’ll look fantastic. Working for Victoria is funding more than 150 workers to give 40 of the city’s famous laneways a major makeover. Most of the workers designers, music producers, lighting specialists, technicians will come from a sector which has been amongst the hardest hit by the pandemic.... Westwood Lane off Bourke Street will be the first cab of the rank this is an image of what to expect created by Ogilvy Australia and Vandal. Working for Victoria is about providing opportunities for people in jobs that produce a real community benefit. If you’re looking for work, or you’re a business looking for the right people for your workforce, head to vic.gov.au/workingforvictoria. 23.01.2022 Builders have now been appointed for upgrades at Ararat Primary School 800. Searle Bros Building Contractors will be transforming old sports facilities at the school to ensure local students have access to great spaces to keep them fit and healthy. Works will include drainage upgrades to the oval and remediation of its surface, as well as new synthetic turf for the school’s outdoor courts.
22.01.2022 I visited The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity today with Dan Andrews to announce $155 million for a new Australian Institute for Infectious Disease. A visionary project that will confirm and enhance our place as a world leader in medical research, create thousands of jobs, and improve and save lives It will be the biggest infectious disease research centre in the Southern Hemisphere with next generation laboratories, high containment facilities, a robotic ...bio bank facility and what our scientists and research community need for world class training and simulation. A cross disciplinary Centre for Infections Disease Modelling will help better predict disease patterns. And we will have greater capacity for early-stage clinical trails to quickly develop vaccines and treatments. Thank you project partners for your leadership and vision. #vicbudget Burnet Institute Walter and Eliza Hall Institute Murdoch Children's Research Institute The University of Melbourne
21.01.2022 Three years ago, Sean Barker made a decision. Sitting in a Western Australian prison nearing the end of his latest spell inside, Sean decided he was not going to go back. He was going to change his life. Sean moved to Victoria and linked up with the Willum Warrain community organisation in Hastings, rediscovering community connections and the stability that those sorts of links can bring.... When an outreach job at Willum Warrain funded by Working for Victoria came up earlier this year, he jumped at the chance. Now he combines his job with study Sean ultimately wants to work as a lawyer so that he can help other Aboriginal people. On Fridays, I head off for a day of connecting with the elders in Frankston, Hastings, Rosebud and everywhere in between, dropping off food, toiletries, jumpers and PPE and having a yarn to see how they’re going, Sean says. Out of all the jobs I’ve done in my life, by far, this is the most important. Keeping people connected to mob is something I feel honoured to do. The importance of work shines through in the ABC’s story on Sean you can see it here tinyurl.com/yxq8xyv6. Aboriginal organisations across the state have experienced a surge in demand for services due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Through Working for Victoria, we’re proud to have backed 29 Aboriginal organisations to employ more than 130 people to help address this demand. tinyurl.com/y4bn66pt
21.01.2022 Business chambers and trader groups play a vital role in supporting their local business communities - small businesses, micro-businesses and sole traders across Victoria - and that’s why we are supporting them. 20.01.2022 Live from The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity with big news.
20.01.2022 The global pandemic has meant our hospitality industry has had to close its doors, depriving us of the way of life that we love so much. Now we’ll help take the indoors out into to the open air as Victorians embrace a new way of gathering together under a new COVID Normal. Major cities like New York and London have led the way in transforming footpaths and roads to whole new experiences, aided by proactive planning and licensing regulations. ... Melbourne and Victoria will apply the best overseas experience to create a new, exciting model for outdoor entertainment as the weather begins to warm up. The Victorian Government’s Outdoor Eating and Entertainment Package will provide $87.5 million to councils and businesses outside of Melbourne’s CBD to make widespread outdoor dining safe, practical and a reality this summer. $58 million will go towards grants of up to $5,000 to help hospitality businesses pay for the practical things that will make this plan work umbrellas, outdoor furniture, screens and other equipment. We’ll also invest in training, advertising, and the other supports businesses will need as we take our café culture outdoors. 20.01.2022 This is how one commercial tenant and landlord worked through their COVID-related rent problems, guided by the Victorian Small Business Commission free mediation service. The situation is real, the names are not. Before the pandemic, Amelie’s family-owned café had been thriving. But after the café’s turnover plummeted, Amelie could no longer pay full rent and other expenses under the terms of her lease. ... Early discussions with landlord Marc about rent relief had gone nowhere. Marc said that he needed the rent payments to pay the mortgage on the property. Negotiations broke down the dispute seemed destined for a courtroom showdown. Then Amelie visited the Victorian Small Business Commission website, where she learned about the VSBC’s free mediation service for commercial landlords and tenants. That same day, Amelie lodged an application with the VSBC for help. The VSBC quickly got in touch with Marc, re-opening communication between the parties. But they still could not reach an agreement. The VSBC progressed the dispute to mediation. An independent mediator guided Amelie and Marc in exploring options that they had not previously considered. Eventually, Amelie agreed to pay an amount of rent she could afford and that was acceptable to Marc, enabling both to have confidence they will be able to get through to the other side of the pandemic.
20.01.2022 Great work everybody, especially those who are still under stricter restrictions. I want you to have no doubt that we are eternally grateful for all the hard work that you are doing to keep all of Victoria and Australia safe from this virus. From midnight, regional Victoria is moving to the third step, meaning that we can get back to enjoying the wonderful things that regional Victoria has to offer.... We are not there yet, but we are winning the fight - keep fighting.

16.01.2022 We understand that young people have been doing it really tough during lockdown. With COVID impacting heavily on opportunities for work and education, it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. That’s why we’ve got to focus on the little things to see this through.
16.01.2022 We are giving the brightest minds in Victoria the funding and support they need to make discoveries and breakthroughs that change lives, save lives and drive the future of Victoria’s economy. With Premier Dan Andrews I visited the National Drug Discovery Centre at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute to see first-hand the ground-breaking research being undertaken at the facility and to announce a landmark $2 billion for the Breakthrough Victoria Fund to ensure Victoria remains at ...the forefront of research and innovation. This is an investment that delivers certainty for industry and will create a pipeline of more than 15,700 jobs. Their advanced robotic high-throughput screening is helping fast-track the discovery of new medicines and discover more effective treatments for a range of conditions. It’s just one example of the world-class research being done right here in Melbourne and as Victoria recovers from the pandemic and rebuilds its economy, the Labor Government is driving further investment in our research and development sector. Victoria’s medical research sector supports more than 30,000 jobs across institutes, universities and industry, with more than 40 per cent of Australian-based biotechnology and medical technology companies calling Melbourne home. The establishment of the Breakthrough Victoria Fund complements the $210 million boost to medical research and new Australian Institute for Infectious Disease which also received funding in this year’s Budget. #vicbudget

13.01.2022 Congratulations to Professor Mike Xie, winner of the 2020 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in Physical Science. Prof Xie is recognised globally for his major contributions to the development and worldwide use of a technology known as Evolutionary Structural Optimisation (ESO) and Bi-directional ESO (BESO). Inspired by naturally occurring structures such as bones, shells and trees, ESO/BESO is now widely used in engineering, architecture, biomedicine and materials sc...ience. The organic and strikingly elegant shapes produced by ESO/BESO have been used in landmark buildings around the world. Among its many practical applications, ESO/BESO can be used to reduce the weight of cars and aircraft, significantly reducing the amount of fuel used by transport. Companies like Boeing and Arup have collaborated with Prof Xie to design and manufacture lightweight, high-performance components. His team also designs and fabricates new composite materials with special properties, such as biomedical implants for surgery patients and body armour for soldiers. RMIT University veski

10.01.2022 Meet Associate Professor David Anderson. David has spent his career taking breakthroughs from the lab and turning them into better tests, vaccines and therapies. Right now, he is leading projects at the Burnet Institute and separately in collaboration with the Doherty, where teams of scientists are working hard to help win the fight against COVID-19. One of his projects is called the COVID-19 QUIK-pass test. It’s a pin prick blood test that measures a patient’s immunity in... under 30 minutes. When someone gets vaccinated for (or survives) measles, they become immune for the rest of their life but COVID-19 immunity is different. It seems to wear off after a few months. Even with an effective vaccine, our immunity will probably wane over time, so we’ll need a test like QUIK-pass to check when a booster shoot is due. The Doherty team has successfully made an early prototype, and David and his team at the Burnet are working to scale up this new tech into a widely available, easy to use point-of-care product. David’s team is also working to create a test to show if someone has had COVID-19 recently, using a new approach that improves on traditional methods that haven’t worked well for COVID-19. Having a fast and accurate test would mean more efficient contact tracing, tracking down mystery cases and allowing people to return to work or school more quickly. Victoria’s world-leading medical researchers are throwing everything they have at beating COVID-19, and we’re proud to support them. 09.01.2022 Congratulations to Professor Kay Crossley, recipient of the 2020 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in Life Science. Professor Crossley's research has revolutionised how we manage hip and knee pain. She’s a world leader in the development of non-surgical, exercise-based treatments that not only address these incredibly common conditions, but also help to treat the chronic health issues that often co-exist with them, such as mental health disorders and cardiovascular d...isease. Her efforts have transformed the treatment of hip and knee pain conditions that would traditionally see people sent for expensive imaging, injections and surgeries. These traditional interventions are not only costly, they also carry risks, and only treat one part of a larger problem. In the four years since she began as the inaugural Director of the La Trobe University Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre, Professor Crossley has produced more than 200 research papers per year and led the centre to become one of the world’s leading institutions of its kind. Her work has helped countless people in Victoria and around the world to manage debilitating hip and knee pain and live happier, healthier lives. As the winner of the Victoria Prize, Prof Crossley receives $50,000 to support her important research. #VicPrize veski
08.01.2022 Tonight’s Maddie’s Match between St Kilda Football Club and Richmond FC is more than a football match - it is also a night to honour the legacy of Maddie Riewoldt and to raise awareness of bone marrow failure syndromes (BMFS). BMFS are a collection of medical conditions where the bone marrow stops working leading to serious infection and illness. It mainly affects young people, like Maddie, aged 17 to 40. About 160 young Australians are diagnosed with the condition every year.... Sadly, more than half will die from the disease. We’re supporting Maddie Riewoldt's Vision in its mission to better understand bone marrow failure syndromes and one day find a cure through clinical research and the establishment of the Australian Marrow Failure Biobank. Collecting clinical data sets with biological sample sets is the most effective way to better understand these rare diseases and crucially improve treatment options. 06.01.2022 The Victorian Government is starting work on the largest revitalisation of CBD laneways in Melbourne’s history, helping jobseekers get back to work and supporting the reopening of the city’s businesses. The CBD itself will also be reinvigorated as iconic laneways become homes of public art as part of a creativ...e revival of our city. At Russell Place today I was excited to meet renowned local artist Kaff-eine and watch her street art piece take shape.
05.01.2022 This week we’ve extended the Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme. This means the Victorian Small Business Commission’s free mediation service will be available until 31 December to help tenants and their landlords to resolve lease disputes. Rent increases as well as evictions for commercial tenants where pandemic-related rent relief has been sought will continue to be banned until the end of the year.... Since March, the VSBC has fielded more than 10,000 rent-related enquiries from small business tenants and landlords. Of those matters that went to mediation, almost 90 per cent resulted in tenants and landlords reaching common ground. To further support local businesses, new regulations require commercial landlords to provide rent relief in proportion with the fall in turnover being experienced by eligible tenants. Previously, proportionality was just one of several factors to be considered during negotiations on rent relief. The VSBC will also be able to issue binding rent reduction orders in situations where landlords refuse to respond to tenants or engage in negotiations in good faith. It shouldn’t come to this, of course. We have extended these emergency commercial rent arrangements to help small businesses trade through to COVID Normal and we expect that all parties will do the right thing. See more at https://vsbc.vic.gov.au

03.01.2022 The pandemic has knocked about our small business community and as we start to emerge on the other side, we’ll continue to provide them with practical support. The Andrews Labor Government’s commitment to pay all small business supplier invoices within 10 business days the fastest government payments timeline in Australia will continue beyond the coronavirus pandemic. The new payment terms will apply to all new contracts under $3 million entered from 1 January 2021.... 02.01.2022 This is Annabel. Earlier this year she found herself without a job after having to move to be with her family due to the coronavirus pandemic. At 23, she had just completed her studies in public relations at university and she was trying to find work close to home at Merrijig, between Mansfield and Mt Buller.... A relative told her about the Youth Employment Program (YEP), which is part of our Working for Victoria initiative and she applied. Now Annabel is working full-time in administration in the property team at Mt Buller. The job is offering her valuable experience and the flexibility to work on-site and at home. Annabel is happy to be in work and making a contribution to her corner of the world. Being able to secure my position at Mt Buller has been a tremendous relief, she says. Having a full-time position close to home in regional Victoria has been a bit of a shining beacon in what has been a really challenging year. Annabel has it right it’s been a year like no other and we’re determined to help as many young people as we can to get a foot in the door and on the road to a fulfilling career. 02.01.2022 A great afternoon to join Maree Edwards MP in my old home town of Castlemaine for a really important announcement. We know there’s been a surge in demand for critical services during the pandemic and that’s why we’re supporting many frontline services with additional employees. As part of our Working for Victoria Fund, an extra eight people are being employed at CHIRP Community Health in Castlemaine.... These new employees will allow CHIRP to better support members of the community, including people with a disability or who are homeless. The boost will also help to provide counselling and case management to an increased number of people who need mental health and alcohol and other drug support. CHIRP’s new administrative assistant Elly says the opportunity is enabling her to learn and giving her experience within her local community. I now have stability for my family in a time where job security has been hit hard, she says. Our Working for Victoria initiative supports jobseekers, and helps employers find good workers quickly.
