01.01.2022 On Tuesday 8th September, Jabalbina staff showed support by attending the BBNAC Family History Stories Project Presentation. The Family History Stories Project was funded through the Federal Government’s Indigenous Languages and Arts Program. BBNAC contracted Ms Jill Bickford to undertake the task of enlisting families who wanted their family stories recorded for historical and cultural purposes.... Jill worked with six families, and comprehensive books have been published on the Douglas, Buchanan, Tayley, Johnson, Kooka and Roberts families. Several of the stories in the books have been translated into Yalanji by Mr Norman Tayley, which adds even more value to these publications. At times the process was distressing for many who took part however, as sad and painful as some stories were, the participants realised the importance of having these stories preserved for future generations. With the permissions of the families, copies of these books will be kept at BBNAC, the Local History Library, Jabalbina and the Queensland State Library. We hope that in the future, further opportunities become available to record more Kuku Yalanji family stories. (To comply with to COVID-19 restriction, limited invitations were sent to attend the presentation).
