25.01.2022 I don't think I'm the only one to have lost a bit of my mojo over the past few months. Turns out, I found joy in quite a few things. Drawing pictures for my first book, HUM. Hearing that it puts a smile on the face of others, and it's helping them.... Playing in the collaborative design 'sandpit' on the #Neverdonebefore facilitation festival with heaps of other facilitators. Getting perspectives and viewpoints from New Zealand, the Ukraine, Montana and Queensland in my walkshops. Swapping notes with Leanne HughesLeanne Hughes on her #FirstTimeFacilitator podcast. Being part of #vid19, a bold idea created from Julia Steel's lounge room. And my conversations about online and face-to-face facilitation with Rebecca Sutherns in Canada (watch #3 below). I wonder what's brought you joy? I bet if you reflected, you can find some too amidst uncertainty. #wonder #facilitation ##onlinefacilitation #book #workshops #joy https://vimeo.com/455430149

25.01.2022 Yay! Looks like free transcripts & captions now available on zoom! This should save heaps of time watching & time coding workshop recordings. As @Jan says, a a huge plus for accessibility! #zoomupdate #transcripts #captions #accessibility

24.01.2022 A weary council manager told me that it felt like they were on the edge of a precipice last week. A whole lot of engagement projects had been put on hold, waiting for public health restrictions to be lifted. They can’t be delayed any longer.... I wonder if you know what community and stakeholder workshops have been put on hold in your organisation until restrictions on physical gatherings lift. If you’re on a precipice are you: Teetering on the edge? Managing to bridge the gap - just. Airborne, carried by a bunch of balloons, which could burst at any moment? Standing back, more confident, on solid ground? More in my blog and I'd love to hear what you think. http://bit.ly/on-the-precipice #engagement #communityengagement #stakeholderengagement #workshops #government #localgovernment

24.01.2022 Great opportunity for anyone in a social enterprise or who works with one: Centre for Social Impact Swinburne Social Startup Studio team have launched 'The Clinics' to offer up to 16 hours of one-on-one advice to Victorian social enterprises impacted by the bushfires and COVID-19. Social enterprise advisors are also being recruited. https://www.socialstartupstudio.com.au/looking-for-help/... #socialimpact #socialenterprise #startupstudio

22.01.2022 Love this, thanks for bringing it to my attention Leanne Hughes. Muddy is amazingly helpful http://bit.ly/Muddyszoomexplainer #zoom #update #explainer

21.01.2022 I was surprised to discover that I've got two things in common with Michelle and Barak Obama. Both involve cars. A good one and one that had seen better days.... What does this have to do with meetings and workshops? It's about warning signs, maintenance and keeping things humming. More in my blog. I'd love to hear what you think. https://bit.ly/warning-signs-meetings-and-workshops #onlinemeetings #onlineworkshops #onlinefacilitation #transition #newnormal #change #hum

21.01.2022 It’s been a week of serendipity as I’ve ventured further afield since the end of lockdown. I’ve made discoveries in conversations and interactions with total strangers in unexpected places. More in my blog and I'd love to hear what you think! https://bit.ly/diving-beneath-the-surface-with-strangers... #curiosity #serendipity #connection #conversations #wonder

20.01.2022 What do fishbowls and trios have in common? They work better on the screen than in the room. More in my blog and I'd love to hear what you think!... http://bit.ly/two-things-that-work-better-on-the-screen #facilitation #onlinefacilitation #workshops #digitfacilitation #bestofbothworlds

19.01.2022 Day 42? 43? #lockdown #2.

19.01.2022 A workshop with a mixed purpose feels a bit the same as a mixed business store. There’s too much on the agenda and we get distracted and don’t have time to explore any of the ‘purposes’ in a meaningful way. More in my blog and I'd love to know what you think. http://bit.ly/mixed-business... #purpose #workshops #workshopdesign #facilitation #engagement #masterclass #backstagepass #training

19.01.2022 Is time on your side when facilitating workshops? We may not be able to control time, but we can make better use of it. More in my blog and I'd love to know what you think.... http://bit.ly/time_blog #workshops #workshopdesign #facilitation #time #backstagepass

18.01.2022 A common complaint about Australian films is that the scripts feel under developed and rushed. It’s the same with workshops. Effort up front makes for less effort in the room. More in my blog and I'd love to know what you think.... http://bit.ly/workshop-or-workout #workshops #workshopdesign #facilitation #masterclass #backstagepass

17.01.2022 What might seem obvious to one, is news to another in our transition to our 'new normal'. More in my blog. I'd love to hear what you think. https://bit.ly/driving-lessons-blog... #transition #digitalmeetings #onlinemeetings #facilitation #change

16.01.2022 Best of both worlds: conversations about facilitation. What does facilitation look like after several months of the ‘new normal’? I'd love to hear how you're going, blending face-to-face and online facilitation techniques to suit context and purpose.... Like me, perhaps there are things you miss about face-to-face workshops. There are also many things I don't miss (stale muffin anyone?). There are aspects of online facilitation that I love, and things that frustrate me. I don't think it's a case of one or the other, 'either or'. I think we can have the best of both worlds. We’re all learning together. I reckon if we approach this new working world with a little wonder and curiosity, we’ll be inspired, rather than overwhelmed. If you don't facilitate workshops, I bet you have been a participant. What do you love about face-to-face workshops? What do you love about online workshops? I'd love to hear. 13.01.2022 No matter how familiar we are with online meeting platforms, things will go wrong and mistakes will happen. More in my blog and I'd love to hear what you think. https://bit.ly/the-blame-game-blog... #onlinemeetings #transition #virtualfacilitation #facilitation

13.01.2022 Just off a behind the scenes call with the crew watching in amazement as Myriam Hadnes weaves together the last threads of this amazing Never Done Before facilitation festival on 20 November Look what pass holders get - a virtual learning journal - check out the clip below. It's on FRIDAY - this FRIDAY for 24 hours.... Time’s running out to get your pass, the last few are available here: https://neverdonebefore.org/pass/ #Facilitation #Workshops #NeverDoneBefore

13.01.2022 Without a 'why', there can be a big gap between your sense of purpose and that of your participants in a workshop. More in my blog and I'd love to know what you think. http://bit.ly/thewhygap... #workshops #workshopdesign #facilitation #engagement #masterclass #backstagepass #training

13.01.2022 Fun playing with a global group of facilitators this morning, testing out the new break out room feature on Zoom. Check out the pix: "let participants choose room"!!!! Our generous host, Jan Keck, set things up beautifully for a fun session. I love how he shared his screen to show us what he was doing, and the jamboard to gather what we loved, how we might use this feature, what questions we have and ideas for improvement. ... Lots of potential. One of the biggest issues will be if participants have installed zoom, the latest version or do they usually just click on a link and access the web version. I'd like to set up an experiment with people who facilitate #communityengagement to see what we'd need to take into account - eg every room has a facilitator, limit time spent in rooms, etiquette when entering and leaving rooms, etc.,. Anyone up for it? Now, I'll do my usual morning routine.....will be a challenge to meditate and do morning pages after being online since 5am!

11.01.2022 Whether it's driving a car or transitioning to working online, we all learn at different stages and speeds. More in my blog and I'd love to hear what you think. https://bit.ly/may-i-see-your-licence... #onlinemeetings #facilitation #transition #digitalmeetings

11.01.2022 This week, I park the platforms and talk a bit about some facilitation fundamentals. Good facilitation allows us to: Connect so we can collaborate.... Participate in purposeful activities that get productive outcomes. Sustain our energy. Create a safe space for robust conversations. 11.01.2022 Attempts to replicate what facilitators did in the room, on the screen, don't always work well. We can do creative activities differently. 05.01.2022 It's a wrap on this month's backstage lunch and learn. What do YOU think a tennis ball has to do with workshop design? Have a guess below. 05.01.2022 I can't believe I'm going to be part of #neverdonebefore global facilitation festival. I'm on Friday 20 November at 2pm (AEST). Come play with perspective, connection and meaning with Show what matters - a unique process that broadens and deepens engagement. We don’t just have to ask people what they think. Ask them to shoot and share photos to show what they think. It’s never been easier. Love to see a few friendly faces there if you can make it.... Still time to grab your pass - it's on for 24 hours and is an amazing line up. https://neverdonebefore.org/ #walkshop #showwhatmatters #photography #connection #engagement

04.01.2022 Last week, I shared a short story about the stoicism of Joan during Melbourne’s long, winter lockdown. She must be one of the few people alive to have lived through two pandemics. The response to the story was wonderful. More in my blog and I'd love to hear what you think! https://bit.ly/still-warms-the-plates... #curiosity #endurance #resilience #stoicism #acceptance

03.01.2022 What does it mean to be a facilitator? In preparation of the #NeverDoneBefore FacilitationFestival, I am interviewing our hosts/ speakers/ facilitators about their drivers, their passion and plans for the festival. 02.01.2022 Attempts to replicate what we did in the room, on the screen, don’t always work well. It underlines the fact that we aren’t in person, more than it actually helps us, as Rebecca Sutherns points out in riff #3 in our Best of Both Worlds conversations on facilitation. Rather than attempting to translate and put up with poor facsimiles of in person experiences, it’s more about leveraging what’s great about the digital experience.... #onlinefacilitation #digitalfacilitation #facilitation #bestofbothworlds #fusion #curiousity #wonder https://vimeo.com/455183483 Checkc out riffs 1, 2 and 3 here https://bit.ly/bestofbothworldsriff//bestofbothworldsriffs

01.01.2022 Because I live in Melbourne I can't get a hair cut, go to the movies, sit in a cafe or go to a friend's house - for very good reasons. Because I live in Melbourne, I get the first copy of #UNITE, straight from the author - at a social distance of course. 'Unusual times call for exceptional leadership, where our task is to replace fear and overwhelm with hope and action.'... Julia Steel created the #vid19conference that shared amazing ideas from 172 thinkers and experts with the world - just when we needed it. Unite brings together 13 of those courageous messages. Julia thinks big and helps others, like me take important steps. I did my first ever online conference talk at #vid19. It also made me buy a proper microphone! #leadership #courage #hope #Action https://vimeo.com/464894662 Order the book: https://bit.ly/orderunitethebook

01.01.2022 Just like with any workshop, how we blend face-to-face and online facilitation techniques goes back to our purpose. More in my blog and I'd love to hear what you think. http://bit.ly/benefits-and-trade-offs... #facilitation #onlinemeetings #onlinefacilitation #transition

01.01.2022 I solve seemingly intractable problems when swimming laps. That’s ‘aqua profunda’. We stretch and move to stop us getting physically jammed up. 01.01.2022 In this new, uncertain world, facilitators are like fusion chefs, bringing together the best of both worlds, from face-to-face and online facilitation.
