24.01.2022 What can children learn from playing in sand? Sand play promotes physical development. Large muscle skills develop as children dig, pour, sift, scoop, and clean up spills with brush and dustpan. Eye-hand coordination and small muscle control improve as children learn to manipulate sand accessories. Sand play also promotes social skills. When children work together at the sand table they are faced with real problems that require sharing, compromising, and negotiating. A gro...up may engage in dramatic play as they "cook," construct roadways, dig tunnels, or create a zoo for rubber animals. As children take on roles associated with their dramatic play, they learn important social skills such as empathy and perspective taking. Mathematical concepts can be developed during sand play by providing children with measuring spoons and cups, containers in a variety of sizes and shapes, balance scales, or counting bears. As you observe children's sand play, use mathematical terms like more/less; many/few; empty/full; heavy/light. Then challenge children to count how many scoops it takes to fill a container. Sequence accessories by size. Develop science concepts by suspending a funnel or pendulum above the sand table. Provide magnets and buried treasure. Use ropes and pulleys to move buckets of sand. Punch holes in a plastic bottle, fill it with sand, and observe. Then try different sizes and placement of holes. . . #sandplay #jackandjillkindergarten #berowra #longdaycare #preschool #education #learnthroughplay

24.01.2022 . Our preschool room has been very busy learning about the weather over the last few weeks. One of the things made were these beautiful wind charms using some recycled paper towel rolls, beads, string, crate paper, and a plastic needle. The class thread their beads onto a piece of string (some using patterns created over the last few weeks). What are some of the benefits behind threading?... 21.01.2022 From octagonal stop signs and rectangular doors, to triangular roofs and circular wheelsshapes are everywhere. Learning shapes not only helps children identify and organise visual information, it helps them learn skills in other curriculum areas including reading, math, and science. For example, an early step in understanding numbers and letters is to recognise their shape. Learning shapes also helps children understand other signs and symbols. A fun way to help your child ...learn shapes is to make a shape hunt game. Cut a shape out of paper and have fun searching your house or neighborhood for objects that match that shape. Or, gather a number of different objects, and help your toddler sort them into piles according to shape. . . . #shapes #jackandjillkindergarten #berowra #education #learningthroughplay

20.01.2022 A big thank you to Konnie who came in and did this amazing Red Cabbage experiment. The Sugar Gliders absolutely loved it. Below is how you can recreate this experiment at home. . . .... Method Peel off three or four big cabbage leaves and put them in a blender filled one-half full with water. Blend the mixture on high until you have purple cabbage juice. Pour the purplish cabbage liquid through a strainer to filter out all of the big chunks of cabbage. Save the liquid for the experiments to follow. Set out three glasses, side by side. Fill each glass three-fourths full with cabbage juice. Add a little vinegar to the first glass of cabbage juice. Stir with a spoon and notice the color change to red, which indicates that vinegar is classified as an acid. All acids will turn red when mixed with cabbage juice. In the second glass, add a teaspoon of washing soda or laundry detergent. Notice how the liquid turns green, indicating that this chemical is a base. Keep the two glasses of red (acid) and green (base) liquid for future reference. Fill the third glass of purple cabbage juice to show the color of a neutral solution. What you will notice, the purple cabbage juice turns red when it mixes with something acidic and turns green when it mixes with something basic. Red cabbage juice is considered to be an indicator because it shows us something about the chemical composition of other substances. What is it about cabbage that causes this to happen? Red cabbage contains a water-soluble pigment called anthocyanin that changes color when it is mixed with an acid or a base. The pigment turns red in acidic environments with a pH less than 7 and the pigment turns bluish-green in alkaline (basic) environments with a pH greater than 7. Happy experimenting #nationalscienceweek #jackandjillkindergarten #berowra #longdaycare #science #scienceexperiments @ Jack and Jill Kindergarten Berowra

20.01.2022 Blocks are openended play materials; there is no right or wrong way to build with them. Sometimes children start with an idea of what they want to make, at other times, the three dimensional design grows as children place blocks together randomly or in patterns. The creations built in blocks are often reminiscent of things they have seen, and so they will begin to name what they build: a house, road or railway train. In block area, children play together and share experience...s. One child's idea of how to build something may differ from another's, so they learn to respect different ideas and learn from each other. As children build together they solve problems and enjoy the benefits of cooperation. Some of the benefits behind block play are: Leads children to make use of physical principles (making towers of blocks for balance, creating supported bridges). Involves children in making a sequence. Involves classifying and sorting objects by size, shape and function (placing blocks of the same size together). Leads children to utilize emergent reading and writing skills (making signs for building). Provides children to demonstrate pride in accomplishments and develop a positive self confidence. Involves the use of mathematical operations such as addition, subtractions and fractions #jackandjillkindergarten #berowra #longdaycare #preschool #blockplay #construction #creative #education #learnthroughplay #creations @ Jack and Jill Kindergarten Berowra

17.01.2022 . . . Building blocks is one of the best educational toys for all ages, that develops multiple skills in a child.... Benefits of buildingblocks include: 1. Hand eye coordination The child has to learn to place the block on the block tower in such a way that does not topple the tower. 2. Teaches kids early math and engineering skills through hands on learning. Kids definitely learn better when they can feel objects and the best way to learn geometric shapes is to feel each and every corner. They learn how heavy the blocks are and then they learn exactly how to place the block in order for it not to fall. 3. Spatial awareness 4. Improves fine motor skills 5. Enhances logical thinking capability it provides mental stimulation and teaches kids cause and effect. For example, if she places the block too close to the edge the tower topples over. . . . #construction #jackandjillkindergarten #berowra #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #learningthroughplay #creative #education

13.01.2022 While every day can be Tree Day, we dedicate celebration of Schools/preschools Tree Day and National Tree Day to the last Friday in July. It's a day to venture outdoors, get to know your community and, most importantly, have fun! Trees are natural carbon sequesters meaning they absorb and capture carbon from our atmosphere. The timber they produce is also an important, environmentally friendly building material because it stores carbon and is a renewable resource. So it's i...mportant we continue to plant trees and look after our natural environment. Being in nature is also good for your health and wellbeing! Having a dedicated day to plant a tree (or more) gets us all out and into our beautiful landscapes. Here at Jack and Jill today we planted three native trees. #nationaltreeday #native #berowra #jackandjillkindergarten #sustainability @ Jack and Jill Kindergarten Berowra

12.01.2022 Here in our 0-1 year old room our amazing Educators have set up this great colour recognition experience. Colour, it’s one of the most noticeable attributes of the world around us. For babies and small children, understanding colour is an essential building block they will use for learning in all areas of their life. By teaching your child about colour (including shades, tones and hues), you will also be helping them to use colour as a means of creative expression in all as...pects of life. Sorting and grouping things together is an important cognitive skill. It teaches your toddler to notice similarities and differences, learn to categorise, and develops early literacy and numeracy skills. Use description words to talk about how things are the same and different i.e. colour, size, shape, what it is used for, made out of, or what category it belongs to e.g. animals, vehicles, tools, clothes, etc. Describing objects and looking for similarities and differences helps develop the language to classify, sort and group things. #colour #colourrecognition #jackandjillkindergarten #berowra #learnthroughplay #educating

10.01.2022 This week were very excited to see how much one of our cauliflowers have started to grow. This sparked many conversations with our three older classrooms. What are some benefits behind gardening with children: Gardening is a terrific way to get children involved with nature. It has the power to teach children about the beauty of flowers and vegetables, whilst also teaching them valuable life lessons like patience and self-confidence.... Gardening provides a great introduction to the environment around them. Children can learn about many different flowers, fruits and vegetables, can physically feel them in their own hands, and can even smell them. This sensory introduction is concrete and solid, and will leave them feeling good. Gardening also teaches our children responsibility. If we don’t water our plants, they will die. Our children must take note of that, and factor in the weather so that they can water the plants accordingly. . . #jackandjillkindergarten #sustainability #longdaycare #preschool #learnthroughplay #gardening #gardenplay #greenthumb

08.01.2022 . . Children have a willingness to learn. It is part of growing. At different stages, children are able to complete more tasks of self-help. It is easier for you to do these tasks yourself, but then it doesn’t teach the child how to do them. By you completing the task, yes it gets done quicker but a lost opportunity to foster independence in yourlittle one. It is important for developmentto encourage self-help skills in children. Ways to encourage self-help skills for tod...dlers * Visual schedule of the steps involved. * Reward chart: Use this in the beginning stages so your child sees what they have completed. * Small steps: Breaking down the task into smaller steps. This helps them master one part before moving on to another step. This also gives them a sense of accomplishment and makes them want to do more. * Routine: Having the same routine will help them learn faster. * Consistency: Keep instructions short and simple. * Pretend Play: Children can practice these skills with dolls or stuffed animals. * Allow enough time:If a child is rushed and not successful they will then be less likely to do this task in the future. 04.01.2022 . . Our Sugar Gliders have been busy over this week learning how to spell their names and letter recognition. By using a variety fun experiences to engage and challenge the children’s pre literacy skills. ... The first stage of learning names occurs when children start torecognize them! Young children begin to recognise the shape of their initial letter and often identify that first letter as MY NAME! They might find that initial letter in other places (separate from their names), point to it and say, Look! There’s my name! even if it is just the one letter. 04.01.2022 Today one of our Sugar Glider children came to kindy with two special books. These books were about a special celebration that his family celebrate called Hanukkah. Hanukkah, (Hebrew: Dedication) also spelled anukka, Chanukah, or Chanukkah, also called Feast of Dedication, Festival of Lights, or Feast of the Maccabees, Jewish festival that begins on Kislev 25 (in December, according to the Gregorian calendar) and is celebrated for eight days. During group time we discovere...d a special dish they like to make called "Latkes". We researched the ingredients and made them for the Sugar Gliders to enjoy before lunch, served traditionally with sour cream or apple sauce. In the other book we discovered what a Menorah was during morning play the Sugar Gliders made a Menorah craft. The steps to making the Menorah: 1 - write their name on the back of half a paper plate 2 - Dip paint brush in edicol and paint their paper plate 3 - use textures to colour in the candle template they were given 4 - cut out the candles 5 - use a glue stick to stick the candles onto their paper plate to make a Menorah
