23.01.2022 Low stoneware bowl, glazed in copper red and chun

23.01.2022 Apricot moon jar in a rutile glaze. There’s a nice subtle ring of pink where the glaze has been applied thickly and crazing that wraps around the pot. There will be lots of new work like this at the open studio sale this weekend. WHEN - today 4-8pm; and... Saturday and Sunday 5-6 December, 9am-4pm WHERE - Kevin Boyd’s studio, 9 Redvers Street, Surrey Hills See more

23.01.2022 Here’s a video of me taking a long neck bottle off its riser. Without one the glaze would stick to the shelf in the kiln.

23.01.2022 Making lidded boxes

21.01.2022 Props to Anna Maas, director of Skepsi Gallery, for her support of the Melbourne ceramics community for over 20 years. I first exhibited with Anna in 2015 and am very grateful for the opportunities she has given me to show my work. Anna has been instrumental in organising top notch ceramics workshops and exhibitions that showcase the work of some pretty exceptional Australian ceramic artists. I think this photo of Anna with one of @colinhopkinspotter’s pots captures her ene...rgy really well. If you’re interested, check out @skepsigallery’s current online exhibition ‘Encounters’ which is now in its final week (and closes on 29 August). A few long neck bottles I made are available for sale in this exhibition.

21.01.2022 Looking forward to our open studio this weekend. This is our 6th showing together

21.01.2022 A good bowl. Saving this one for the open studio next weekend 4-6 December 2020 9 Redvers St, Surrey Hills VIC

20.01.2022 Vase in oxidised copper glaze catching some rays Available in the shop (and it’s on sale too, wew!)

20.01.2022 My latest shop update includes some porcelain wheel thrown orbs. I enjoy making these forms. They balance fluidity with stillness, lightness with strength. Almost like containing air under pressure. If you're interested, check them out in the online shop. I've put some on sale so they are more accessible. http://jackbalfourceramics.com/shop

20.01.2022 C O P P E R . R E D This is my favourite pot from last year. It's a really nice example of copper's sensitivity to temperature and atmosphere Firing with gas allows you to control the atmosphere of a kiln, which affects the way glaze melts. The atmosphere in the kiln when I fired this pot created four windows of colour - turquoise blue, white, yellow and red. ... I placed this pot right above one of the back burners in the kiln. The flame licked the pot where it turned blue, creating a hot spot in the reduction atmosphere and a beautiful molten blush.

19.01.2022 Mixing glazes, finding new colours...

19.01.2022 I'm pretty excited about these new glazes Neodymium blue and Copper green

18.01.2022 My local North Melbourne foodstore, Mr Price’s, now stocks a collection of my pots. I’m wrapped to feature in his window. Mr Price makes the BEST red onion and prune chutney.

18.01.2022 A monster lidded box drop is coming next Friday, 2 October.

18.01.2022 The most important thing to me is the fit of the lid. I wait for the porcelain to firm past leather hard so there’s no distortion and a good fit between the lid and body

17.01.2022 S P R I N G . C L E A N The spring clean sale is now live. I’m hoping to clear some space in my studio for new work. I’ve also been thinking about how to make some of my pots more accessible during covid. Check out the sale via the link in my bio.

16.01.2022 A quick thank you to everyone who has purchased a pot from my online shop recently. I really appreciate your support, especially during these hard times. I’m so happy that you like them

13.01.2022 Spring is coming! I’ve been working on some new stuff for the online shop and need to make room in the studio. So I’m going to have a spring clean sale soon. Sign up to my newsletter via the link in my bio for details

09.01.2022 Wedging blue porcelain

08.01.2022 Last summer my friends and I went hiking in the Otways, the land of the Girai Wurrung and Gadubanud people. We collected a couple of interesting looking rocks along the way. I’ve made a glaze from them. The glaze is a warm, creamy white with dark brown speckles of trace iron. The minerals in the rocks affect the colour of the glaze and the way it transforms during firing. There’s a real sense of the Otways landscape in this glaze.

06.01.2022 Some lidded boxes from the latest batch that are making their way through the studio. They’ve been been bisque fired and now I’m finishing glazing them so they’ll be ready to be in the online shop on Friday.

06.01.2022 Fresh from the kiln

04.01.2022 A good pair of coffee cups, glazed in copper red and lilly chun. I placed them next to each other in the kiln hoping for some blushing colour variation. We drink coffee from them most mornings.

04.01.2022 I’m pretty excited about these lidded boxes that came out of the kiln this week. There’s loads of variety including copper reds, titanium and cobalt blues and stained porcelain. There are some belters in there! They’re in the online shop if you’re interested in taking a look http://jackbalfourceramics.com/shop?category=Lidded+Boxes

03.01.2022 Nice blush on this copper red lidded box

01.01.2022 Cup glazed in titanium and copper, fired in reduction. I really like the way that the glaze hangs on at the bottom to form a rim. The transition from satin to gloss feels nice to touch. This cup is on sale at the mo. Link to shop in bio
