19.01.2022 It's not only Ken's birthday, but it's a special milestone for our favourite man, as today he turns 60! That's right - according to Mattel, after Barbie's release in 1959 HUNDREDS of letters poured in all asking that they produce a boyfriend for her. And the rest is history, with a match made in plastic Heaven ... In honour of his 60 years on this earth, Mattel have created a reproduction of the very first Ken doll and he even has flocked hair! Mattel had to restyle Ken's look two years after his debut by replacing the flocking - which suffered too much wear and tear - with painted hair. As this 2021 collector version is a Gold Label Edition (meaning no more than 20,000 are released world-wide) it's probably safe to say he won't need to stand up to the rigours of the toy box! Collector Ken comes with all the accessories the original came with - red swim shorts and matching sandals, a yellow towel and a "Genuine Ken" wrist tag. A Certificate of Authenticity and Doll Stand are also included. As far as celebrating Ken's 60th birthday goes, this Anniversary Ken doll is certainly a gorgeous memento for the occasion, and would certainly make a stunning inclusion in anyone's collection. I for one am super excited to see him IRL! However, what would have made the date even MORE special is if Mattel had released a black Ken alongside him to celebrate how far he, and the world, have come in 60 years. What do you think? Would you too have liked there to be more than just the blonde Ken available, or do you feel that as the first Ken was only made with white skin (in both blonde and brunette), that Mattel was right to just release the one version (the first Black Ken wasn't released until 1982)? 08.01.2022 While we're waiting on the Barbie Signature Ken 60th Anniversary Doll to make his fashionably late appearance (in spite of being slated for a Jan 15 release, it now seems he will be made available on his actual birthday - tomorrow - woo hoo ) let’s talk about the 60th Anniversary PLAYLINE Ken dolls! These three dolls were created to celebrate three iconic Ken dolls - Original(1961), Great Shape(1984) and Rocker Derek(1985)!! They became available in late Nov/Dec last year an...d were even seen in Australian stores - but they must have been snapped up real quick as I was only able to get one single doll - the Original! Their outfits are not direct reproductions but rather modern takes on the classic dolls, which I think is a clever way to appeal to both kids and adult collectors alike. Interestingly Rocker Ken was based on Barbie and the Rockers band member Derek, rather than Ken with his scarily bouffant hair - I think we can all guess why!! Which is your favourite? 03.01.2022 Browsing the Barbie aisle in Big W - as you do - I came across this super cute new handbag collection called "My Barbie Life"! I immediately remembered I needed a new evening bag... The bags come in 3 different styles and come with "one for me and one for B!" - a matching mini version for Barbie ...
