17.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day 2020 a day during Suicide Awareness Week which aims to shine the light on the importance of suicide prevention, through speaking up and checking in regularly with each other by asking the question ‘R U OK?’ Every life lost to suicide is tragic and one too many. Suicide is responsible for more than 800,000 deaths across the globe each year and it has a profound effect on families and communities. For each life lost to suicide, about 135 people are affe...cted through grief and loss. That equates to about 108 million bereaved, a staggering figure. We can all take an active role in preventing suicide every day. Especially during COVID-19, making sure that we are supporting each other and engaging in regular, meaningful conversations has never been more important. A conversation can change and save a life, and this year what to say after ‘R U OK’ is a key focus behind awareness activities and resources, as well as developing skills in conversation and to learn about where you can go for help and support if needed. More information about suicide prevention and R U OK day, including conversation tips, is available at www.suicidepreventionaust.org and www.ruok.org.au
