23.01.2022 Spending time at home due to Corona Virus, just making sure I don't catch it. Totally enjoying working on my Bonsai, trimming and repotting. Also looking and moving a few trees around so I can fit more in....Don't tell the boss!!!
22.01.2022 Bonsai design does not always give instant results, small trees take years to grow some grow slow some fast, however good design comes with time and age. A good Bonsai should show age in trunk thickness and design, study nature as well as well as Bonsai. It all takes time. It is mainly the very experienced and talented artists that work with older/larger trees, most artists grow there best trees from young stock and develop style in the tree over time. If a tree has a high (i...n your opinion) price it may be an old tree that has undergone a number of styling mods over many years, taking patience and knowledge. $50 - $100 is not expensive for a nice Bonsai such as a Juniper, old trees can cost as much as $1000+. Take care buying from a large store selling what they call Bonsai, many trees are poor quality made on mass for retail sale. You are better off buying a small tree in a plastic pot and a cheap Bonsai pot and Bonsai soil mix and having a go yourself.. Happy to give some of my knowledge via my site or you can book me for a one on one beginners course, you will learn some theory, plant selection and potting techniques. Happy Bonsai Journey. See more
21.01.2022 Welcome to 2020. Is it too late to re-pot? Well, yes and no. However, the optimal window for moving to a new environment has mostly passed and it would be dangerous to attempt it now. We recommend that it is best to wait until late March where there is a small window to re-pot. If it is not urgent, it is best to wait until late in winter (or early spring). But, what if my tree is needing a boost? If you are really concerned, there are a couple of things you could do.... Firstly, you could add some bonsai mix to the top of your soil. This will at least give you some unused growing medium which the roots will soon find. Secondly, you can 'mulch' with some finely cut up sphagnum moss (pro-tip: use a grater). This will keep the soil cooler, as well as help hold moisture. Lastly, if it's truly urgent (and this is the least desirable) - you can 'pot up'. This is done by slipping your bonsai into a slightly larger pot, with new mix in the bottom and also filling the sides. WARNING: DON'T CUT ANY ROOTS! See more

19.01.2022 A jade bonsai created from Portulacaria afra is much easier to develop as a good bonsai than the larger leaf jade plant, Crassula argentea. This African succulent can be a good indoor plant, but it needs lots of light. It also likes to be on the dry side and frequent pruning will keep it in shape. Portulacaria afra is also known as elephant grass, small leaf jade and dwarf jade. It has shorter internodes and much smaller leaves than Crassula varieties. However, both speci...es are often referred to by the common name of jade. Young branches and trunk are reddish brown, when they mature they become grayish in color. The leaves are very close together, obovate, opposite and just under 1/2 ’’ long -- when grown in the sun. To keep a good bonsai shape, prune frequently. In the summer it is not unusual to prune twice a week, or more, to maintain a well-styled tree.

14.01.2022 THE JADE PLANT The Portulacaria afra (jade) is an extremely popular Bonsai. Sometimes called the money plant or dollar plant, these plants are thought to bring good luck to their owners so are often given as housewarming gifts. Jade plants belong to the Crassula species and are generally undemanding. There are several species of jade plants available. They need an even hand with water and plenty of light to develop their full potential. Growing Conditions: Light: Full sun. W...ater: Water during the summer and spring, making sure drainage is immaculate. Reduce water in the winter to monthly. Temperature: Prefers average summer temps Soil: A well-drained succulent mix, with an ideal pH around 6.0 (slightly acidic). See more

10.01.2022 HOW TO WATER BONSAI TREES How to water bonsai trees is one of the key questions we are asked when our customers purchase a new bonsai. Indeed, even experienced bonsai enthusiasts need to work out the watering intricacies of a new tree they are growing. WHEN TO WATER YOUR BONSAI Bonsai, like all trees and plants need water in order to be healthy. Because the bonsai is in a pot that limits its size, the frequency of watering is an important factor.... Bonsai trees should only be watered when they need it The basic guideline for when to water your bonsai tree is to water whenever the soil is slightly dry. Depending upon the time of year and the temperature this could result in multiple watering requirements. Because the needs of the individual tree must be evaluated based on species, soil and potting, there is no hard and fast rule about when to water every bonsai. But there are a few things to help guide you along. WATERING METHODS The best way to water your bonsai, the overhead watering. Use a hose or a watering can over your bonsai, ensure the hose nozzle or can rosette is delivering a fine spray, as you don’t want to dislodge soil, fertilizer or damage your tree. To water simply pour over your tree Water your bonsai twice in a watering session Once to wet the soil a little 15 or 20 minute later water again, this time thoroughly, allowing the water to puddle a little on the surface and run out of the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Jade Bonsai offers 3 hour beginners courses and 4 hr intermediate courses form $30/h/person + materials.
