17.01.2022 PART THREE Unravelling to Recognition Breakdown - The knotted paper fronds. These hanging knotted paper fronds are inspired by texture and shapes found in nature. Charcoal has been applied and rubbed into the surface of the paper (which is the same paper as used in the suspended paper screen - see previous post), then multiple knots are tied along each strip with both ends attached to string. The placement of these fronds is designed to pull people into the space, a...long with adding an organic contrasting texture between the adorned beaded garment and the white flow of the paper screen. In the darker hours you will see where the projection hits these, creating a moving texture on their surface along with marking interesting shadows on the suspended paper. . 14.01.2022 PART ONE Unravelling to Recognition Breakdown. I thought over the coming days I would share with you the ideas, thought process and materials that influenced this multimedia installation (which can still be viewed on street level Maitland Regional Art Gallery as you pass by grabbing your essential goods / travel and exercise) . Part One: The Beaded Garment (The Yoke) / The Projection. I was gifted a wonderful haul of fabrics by a local creative, and this beaded beauty was... included. I found it so beautiful that I felt compelled to keep it in my view in my studio as I worked. I was experimenting with projection onto paper at the time, using an old school overhead projector, I placed the beaded yoke on the projector as it threw a striking pattern, it was so interesting seeing it in a different light, from a different perspective. From the stillness I wanted to make some movement. I hung a piece of satin fabric and projected the still image onto it, and then filmed some footage of myself moving behind the fabric. This element of the installation aims to represent inner reflection and the power of exploring memories and experiences from different perspectives to gain a broader understanding. ... 13.01.2022 Immersing myself into 1950s sci-fi design and movies in prep for a collaboration which is underway for a Super-8 short film being written and shot in Maitland over the next few weeks. Co-produced by Julien Poulson (The Cambodian Space Project) and Mark Roy (Super-8 Cinematographer) Words from the producers: Space Junk is the working title for a short film co-production between Julien Poulson (The Cambodian Space Project) with Mark Roy (Super-8 cinematographer), Sean Ballen...den @triple_three_records and local artists within the creative community of Maitland, Australia. The idea - to make a 50s sci-fi, Ed Wood type film - was cooked up over a few bowls of ramen at the local Korean restaurant, through a conversation about music and film with local musician and artists Sean Ballenden and Jaime Pritchard. Mark will shoot this film on vintage Super-8 film stock. Its a format weve used for our last two collaborations which included Sumatra and Flicker&Fade, both films made it into festivals and even led us to Cannes Film Festival to premiere our 3:20second edit-in-camera movie! #makeitmaitland #mymaitland #maito #creativecity #newcastle #huntervalley #scifiblues #thecambodianspaceproject

11.01.2022 PART FIVE (and final) Unravelling to Recognition Breakdown - The Soundscape The soundscape to this installation was composed by Sean Ballenden - Engineer, Producer, Musician and recorded at his studio Triple Three Records . Music is such an integral part of my life, and as sound in nature was an inspiration for this work, it was natural to want to incorporate it in someway. Sean being my partner had seen some elements of my work in progress, but worked completely independ...ently on our respective parts of this work, allowing our individual creative expressions at that point in time to sit together in the same space. At the time Sean was exploring sounds of traditional Nordic folk music, which had some influence on the theme of the soundscape. Sean quotes that Initially the idea was composed on a synthesizer, then was translated onto guitar. All sound was played on a Fender Telecaster, then manipulated through an assortment of guitar effects into an Orange bass amp. As the soundscape is such a strong part of the overall installation, to enable the audio experience from outside the building a QR code can be scanned on the glass window, directing the viewer on the street to a video where the soundtrack can be heard. : Read more on my website (link in bio) and in Artel magazine which is available to read on the MRAG website. : Unravelling To Recognition, 2020 multimedia installation video projection, paper, timber dowel, charcoal, cotton, beaded sequined embroidered garment yoke sound by @seanballenden garment yoke donated from private collection of Leonie Smith : Image 1) Sean in his studio 2) Assortment of guitar effects used 3) Detail of gear used to record soundtrack @triplethreerecords : #art #artinstallation #fronds #papersculpture #paperinstallation #paperlove #multimediainstallation #design #designer #artist #h#visualartist #projection #overheadprojector #mrag #maitlandregionalartgallery #soundart #soundartist #soundscape #recordingstudio #musicproducer #recordingengineer #soundscape #soundart #composition #musiccomposition @ Maitland Regional Art Gallery See more

09.01.2022 The doors are shut but the artworks are still on the gallery walls!! Just because visitors cant come to the gallery to experience the exhibitions that are on d...isplay doesnt mean they shouldnt be celebrated and enjoyed. Heres todays offering - Lucas Grogan, Long Story Short. This exhibition spans 10 years of Lucas career as well as three site specific murals. These arent your regular murals, your not going to find any broad-brush strokes and blocks of colour in this show! They were painstakingly created stroke upon stroke in Lucas signature style: highly patterned utilising a limited palate. Plus (and you will need to zoom in on this image) Lucas created a text based mural 29 punchy sentences beginning with the exhibition title Long Story Short. Long Story Short this exhibition is too good not to share!

07.01.2022 PART FOUR Unravelling to Recognition Breakdown - Light and Colour. : Generally in my work I am drawn towards warmer tones and blacks, but for this installation I was compelled to explore fresh and vibrant colours in a cooler spectrum. The first image shown here represents a moment that has inspired this aspect of the installation. It was taken in June last year at a place which is very special to me. On my numerous stays in the UNESCO heritage town of Hoi An in central Vi...etnam, I have stayed with the same family and spent much time sitting by the villas pool, cooling down on a typical stifling humid afternoon. I caught this moment from under the umbrella, intrigued with its contrast between plastic and nature / the light and bright green against the textures of the palm and its fronds, listening to the sound and watching the movement of shadows of breeze through the fronds pulling my awareness back into the moment. Back in the studio when playing with the coloured light I found that by mixing two different coloured light sources (blue and green) onto the paper it revealed an interesting effect - with some of the paper catching more of the blue and others more of the green, and by having the light shine through the paper from behind revealed another wonderful aspect of the nature of the paper. The colour hues in the Project Space at night create an otherworldly place, far from how it is viewed in the daylight hours. : Read more on my website (link in bio) and in Artel magazine which is available to read on the MRAG website. : Unravelling To Recognition, 2020 multimedia installation video projection, paper, timber dowel, charcoal, cotton, beaded sequined embroidered garment yoke sound by @seanballenden garment yoke donated from private collection of Leonie Smith : Image 1) Photograph by artist for artwork study 2) & 3) Playing with colour and light in the studio 4) Detail of Unravelling to Recognition installed at @maitlandregionalartgallery : : #art #artinstallation #fronds #papersculpture #paperinstallation #paperlove #multimediainstallation #design #designer #artist #h#visualartist #projection #overheadprojector #mrag #maitlandregionalartgallery @ Maitland Regional Art Gallery See more

06.01.2022 As you are probably aware I am a big supporter of the work that Blue Dragon Children's Foundation do to save children from slavery and girls and women from human trafficking. They are receiving an alarming increase of calls for help and therefore reaching out with an emergency appeal. Every little bit helps, just $15 is enough to feed a family in need for a week. If you are not in a position to donate right now, I still urge you to take a look at the incredible work the Blue Dragon team do.

04.01.2022 Im a lover of print and tactile practices, but also respect and enjoy what digital tools add (and remove) from the process. I started this illustration over a year ago during time in transit - at the time only using a cheap and nasty stylus - which didnt leave me much in love with the experience... but now with a few commercial illustration projects on the burner I thought it would be fine to invest in the Apple Pencil, and I must admit I am having such a great time with it...... and keen to revisit and work these sketches further. : : : : #design #designer #graphicdesigner #Illustration #illustrator See more

03.01.2022 PART TWO of the Unravelling to Recognition Breakdown, where I am sharing the thought process and materials that came together to create the installation currently showing at Maitland Regional Art Gallery. Part Two: The Paper Screen. I have had a love affair with this paper for some years now. It is made from mulberry tree fibres and comes in 10m rolls which allows for working at a large scale. This installation is made up of approximately 50sqm of handcut strips. In the p...ast I have added colour and texture to the paper using mediums like ink and acrylics, but I wanted to create a work which revealed the true nature of the paper, experimenting with new ways of adding colour and texture and playing with light and shadow. The Project Space at Maitland Regional Art Gallery is a really interesting space, also challenging in its dimension being so narrow. I wanted to create something that had impact through day and night and utilise the 24/7 street front visibility. The 4m wide suspended paper screen is hung on a diagonal in the space to create interesting shadows and layering from the projection and light, and to also reshape the room, creating a void which assists in pulling people into the small space. The soft textural nature of the paper is designed to contrast against the hard lines of the space and the building. The repetition, momentum and flow of the paper is a visual reference of unravelling, through letting go and allowing a space for contemplation. . 03.01.2022 The redesign of this magazine for Maitland Regional Art Gallery just under two years ago is one of my project highlights by far. Working with Sally Denmead whom has breathed so much work into this magazine over the last 3 years to express the importance of MRAG to the local creative community and beyond, was, and will continue to be, enlightening and inspiring. Issue #4 of Maitland Regional Art Gallery magazine Artel is now available for viewing and reading pleasure.

01.01.2022 An assortment of emotions were felt today as I cleared out my studio in Maitland to take on a fresh chapter - working in, and renovating Plan A - the home studio oasis. Plan B which was an out of the blue opportunity to move into a crazy old dilapidated building with a dark history right on the Hunter River just had to be lived, and it offered great opportunity and allowed me to stretch well out of my comfort zone into all kinds of places. I thought this image captured it all... literally... remnants of the projects that were born and explored during the last few years swept up in a colourful pile as I clean the space for @goddamnit_liz to move on in to spread her wings. Such a timely move @ The Factory Maitland
