THE EXPERIMENT Doctors teamed up with a Prof Fulvio D’Acquisto, an immunologist from the University of Roehampton and the Bodyology Massage School. Mr Fulvio found research that massage could boost the number of white blood cells in patients suffering from HIV, the disease that causesed a reduction in a type of white blood cell known as T Lymphocytes. Can massage have the same effect for people without serious immune conditions? 7 volunteers where invited for a massage to see. First after taking a blood sample from each of person, then analysed it for the number of T Lymphocytes present. This served as a baseline reading. Next they asked them to lie down and relax for an hour, before taking another blood sample. This was so they could be sure that when they tested their levels after a massage, any changes in T Lymphocyte count were due to the massage itself, not simply the effect of an hour’s relaxation. Then came just one hour massage. Immediately afterwards they took a third and final blood test. THE RESULTS Comparing baseline results, to the volunteers results after the massage showed a 70% boost in white blood cells. The immune system is complex, and by increasing the white blood cell count in a person will improve their health. T-lymphocytes perform a wide array of functions in the body involved with growth and repair, which in part, explains why massage has been reported to help a wide variety of conditions.
