October 29, 2019 Western Sydney Airport’s terminal will be designed by architects from Sydney and London, with the Badgerys Creek facility to include vertical gardens and timber ceilings. Passengers who arrive at the $5.3 billion airport will be greeted by landscaped gardens, a grand public plaza and a series of retail, entertainment and dining options. The winning design by Cox Architecture from Sydney and Zaha Hadid Architects from London was selected from more than 40 entrants competing to win the design contract for the new terminal. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the exterior of the terminal will complement the natural landscape at Badgerys Creek, which is 50km west of the Sydney CBD. This is set to be the largest gateway to Australia and these designs are another step to making it a reality, he said. Designed alongside locals and built by local workers the airport will deliver massive economic benefits to the region. The new airport is being developed in four stages with the aim of handling 10 million passengers a year when it opens in December 2026, rising to 82 million passengers by the 2060s about the same as New York City's John F. Kennedy international airport handles today. The government plans to build and operate the airport, whose formal title will be Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, until it is ready to sell it. The airport's chief executive, Graham Millett, has previously said the airport will be "a prize piece of infrastructure" that will most likely be floated in an initial public offering to attract billions of dollars from superannuation funds seeking long-term investments. Mr Millett wants to make air-freight rates more competitive with road- and sea-freight rates and plans to pitch the airport to agribusinesses that export perishable goods to Asia. Qantas and Virgin Australia have already started talks with the new airport over potential routes, and construction contracts are in the process of being awarded.
