25.01.2022 Croc Nests! Did you know.... Mumma crocs scrape up grasses, reeds, and river vegetation with their back legs to make into a big mound nest right next to the water. ... They lay between 30 to 50 eggs every year - though the biggest nest I've seen is 92 eggs! The mumma guards the nest for months, never leaving to hunt or take time off, and defending the whole area from pigs, monitor lizards and other crocs. She uses her sensitive snout to check the temperature of the nest, often moving material on or off to keep perfect temp (29-33c). After 86 to 90 days, the baby crocs, using an "egg tooth" that develops at the end of the snout, push their way through the egg, crawl up through the vegetation and emerge out of the nest to their waiting mumma. Most of the time, mumma crocs will return year on year (in late spring and summer) to the exact same place, to build onto the same nest and do it all over again. Gotta give credit where credits due - Crocs, when protecting their nest, are great mothers...and are the deadliest animals around! Fun fact - The sex of a baby Croc is determined by the temperature inside the nest. 29-31c develops mostly girl crocs and 31-33c develops mostly boy crocs. The technical name for this is Temperature Dependent Sex Determination. How cool! Damien Cowan

23.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Today on my walk along the Idalia lakes had brought an absolute horror to my attention... Dead birds everywhere as well as dead freshwater turtles, a dead pelican , Dead snakes and basically anything that uses that water as a source of hydration or as a home.... This water is riddled with a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum aka ( Botulism ) and also blue green algae Botulism is a paralytic disease caused by ingestion of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Avian botulism can occur in any bird species, but is most frequently seen in ducks, geese, swans, ibis, egrets and pelicans. Now let’s get into FACTS. Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that produces dangerous toxins (botulinum toxins) under low-oxygen conditions. Botulinum toxins are one of the most lethal substances known. Spores produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum are heat-resistant and exist widely in the environment, and in the absence of oxygen they germinate, grow and then excrete toxins. There are 7 distinct forms of botulinum toxin, types AG. Four of these (types A, B, E and rarely F) cause human botulism. Types C, D and E cause illness in other mammals, birds and fish. for people living in IDALIA along these lakes - C. botulinum produces spores and they exist widely in the environment including soil, river and sea water... So if your growing tomato’s or vegetables, PLEASE be careful. I am alerting health authorities to this matter, along with the department of environment and science. As some of you may know, I am a wildlife rescuer and I put in effort to preserve our wildlife. THIS WAS PREVENTABLE, The council have not made any efforts to unrestrict this water way and to me they should be ashamed of themselves. I am distressed, saddened and shocked that this is allowed to continue without any attention. PLEASE SHARE THIS AROUND. IT NEEDS COVERAGE. P.S - I’m trying to figure out health and safety regulations to see what PPE would be required to remove non native invasive plants from the pond so if anybody would be interested in joining me to help cleanup it would be amazing. Although there would be risks. EDIT : Gofund me setup! Let’s get the ball rolling, will purchase PPE so we as a community can come together when our own council won’t https://www.gofundme.com/f/264qe16pmo

22.01.2022 Check out this amazing image! We caught up with the awesome staff of Darwin Veterinary Hospital last week and they showed us this sensational X-ray image! Darwin Veterinary Hospital provide consultation for many native animals. This beautiful specimen, a Top End Carpet Python (Morelia spilota), had a run in with a dog and the team decided to X-ray the python to check for any potential internal injuries. The crew were surprised to see the X-ray also revealed a perfect image the pythons' recent meal, an invasive Black Rat (Rattus rattus)! Pythons are the best pest control technicians! 21.01.2022 This isn't my Post or Photo, it's from one of my Rehabber Groups, I'm sharing this because I know people tend to come in contact with Wildlife and Need a Rehabbers help, When a Rehabber tells you Not to do something, You DONT DO IT. "DONT FEED ANY WILD ANIMAL WHEN A REHABBER TELLS YOU NOT TO!... Last night at midnight I was out on a rescue mission, going into Conway SC. I had instructed the finder not to feed and to keep baby warm. When I arrived at the finders house after a three hour drive and when I asked the finder what she did during the three hours, she said and I quote "I fed 1 cup of vaporized milk and 1 tablespoon of sugar and I gave the baby a bath". I froze and went into a trance. I knew that this sweet, innocent soul was going to die, but I had faith that she was going to be ok either way. I fought for her life. I gave nebulizer treatments, injectable baytril, SMZ, pain meds, heat, sub q fluids, etc. I checked on her every 5 minutes to wipe the blood coming from her nose so she could breathe. Nothing worked. Sugar (the squirrel) has passed. She will never get to live her life. She will never breathe the October air. She will never have kids of her own. She will never build a nest or fall in love. She will never LIVE. Just one thing could have changed this outcome and that is to listen to a rehabbers exact instructions. I don't know everything and I haven't seen everything, but I know enough to make certain recommendations to finders. I have seen aspiration pneumonia and what it can do. We as rehabbers know what we are doing, we have raised thousands and released thousands of wildlife. Please when you find an animal, any animal, please don't feed it. It could mean life or death and I mean that. Life...or death." See more

11.01.2022 ( SHARED FROM FACEBOOK ) Please share Hi everyone. I'm looking for my father that I have never met. His name is Thomas Wayne Lowe born June.... This is the only photo I have of him from 35 years ago (around two years before I was born in 1986). He was living in Adelaide and moved to Townsville around 1983-85 with my mother but she returned to Adelaide before I was born. I've been told he spent years in Townsville, was married/divorced and had a son "William". Birth year roughly 1989. I've been in contact with members of his family since I was born, spending holidays at my auntys house with my cousins. More recently I have connected to others on Facebook but no one knows where he could be. My family on his side aren't in contact with him and I've tried to get any information I can. I think the last he was seen by a family member was around 2002 in Majors Creek, QLD. I'm not sure if he lived there or was visiting. I have the full family tree but unfortunately it hasn't helped locate him. **edit** I have received some negative comments about trying to find my father this way and the 'consequences' of my actions. Rightfully so but... Yes he knows about me, he was living with my mother while she was pregnant. No I am not ruining his new family. They are separated and not in contact. Why hasn't he looked for me if he wanted to know me? You're guess is as good as mine. Please don't post negative comments . Birth location unknown but probably Adelaide. His mother was Ruth Lowe (Matthews) 10/11/1923 - 25/7/2004 His father was Thomas William Lowe 7/1/1920 - 24/11/1979 If you have any information please let me know. I would really appreciate any help or advice on finding a lost family member Best of luck for everyone searching Ladys Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ashleymorganlegg

09.01.2022 THIS IS SO CUTE!!!

09.01.2022 A fish can’t learn to swim by reading a book This evening I had the chance to educate an amazing couple from alligator creek step by step on how to remove a... Joey from the mother’s pouch. Unfortunately the mother had died whilst we were in route but the little Joey is doing very well after the effort the couple put in when we arrived. Being able to involve people is an amazing feeling, not only for me but also for them. In situations like these, most people have no clue what to do and often panic. I’m very glad that tonight I was able to pass on some knowledge, and hopefully this experience can be passed on to other members of the community when the need arises for a helping hand. If any assistance is needed with wildlife, don’t hesitate to contact me as I’m available 24/7 on 0400339184 Also, I have attached the link to my gofund me below... we rely on YOUR generosity to keep us going as we don’t get any government funding or support, ( Every cent comes from our own pockets ). Cheers guys, and thank you all https://gf.me/u/yzds2v

07.01.2022 My daily morning routine ..... Get out of bed, get dressed and go for a drive along the Bruce highway to about cungulla. I do this drive EVERY SINGLE MORNING, In the hopes that I will save the lives of the joeys who's mothers were hit that night.... I know that every single morning, between Oonoonba and Cungulla when I am driving, that ill spot atleast one kangaroo that's still alive, in a ditch, with a broken leg... Unable to move, In agonising pain, with 100s and 100s of cars driving past that can see it, but simply do not care about it suffering. I know that every single morning, Ill be abused and have slurs yelled at me by passing by motorists who think these animals are " Pests ". I know that every single morning, Ill have to eauthinise atleast one kangaroo on site, due to the fact of it being just way to inhumane and traumatic to transport it to a vet for eauthinasia. I know Every Single Morning when I wake up, That it will be a day of which ill try to hold back many tears, A day of which I can barely hold myself together, A day of which I'll feel like I'm loosing the battle. Every single morning, Of every day, Of every year, Of every Decade.... MILLIONS of animals loose their lives on our highways and roads. How long can this continue for?. The moral of this story is, Dont be hard on somebody because they may not be feeling " 100% ", Or even if they might not want to be social. You just do not know what that person has been threw within that week or on that day.... Depression IS REAL. And ill be totally honest... Im going threw this battle Everyday, Along with the millions of other people around the world. #ItsOkNotToBeOk #WildlifeRescueIsNotAlwaysRewarding #SupportOneAnother
