20.01.2022 PSA : have you heard of the freeze stress response? this happens to me every now and then.. and every time i down-regulate after a freeze response, i am in awe of our bodies and brains capacity to protect us. this mechanism is important to know about, especially with the amount of mental health stuff circulating our globe right now. ... the freeze response is a stress response designed to protect us from danger.. kinda like when the deer freezes in the headlights. when we enter this state, our Brocas area of our brain (responsible for verbally expressing), literally shuts off and verbalising how we feel, or think becomes impossible. it is important to be able to understand this response, particularly if you are supporting (or are) someone who is moving through post traumatic stress, complex trauma or anxiety.. you can tell someone is in the freeze response when : they hold their breath or have a very irregular breath pattern they can't move or respond to you when you ask them questions body temperature drops their body literally freezes, and they may go limp or feel very stuck in one position they feel like they are watching themselves from outside of their body their heart rate slows down (or sometimes increases) how to support someone in this : (same applies if you are self-soothing) assure them they are safe with you in that moment squeeze their arms and ask them to see if they can feel it (or get them to squeeze their arms) get them to feel the ground beneath their feet validate their feelings and again, assure them they are okay slow your own breathing down, and watch the magic of co-regulation guide them to see a professional to help them understand their triggers and how to work with them listen to my free mediations on insight timer (link in the bio) if this post was useful, let me know below so i can share more like it! www.jalayoga.co
