25.01.2022 Citizen scientists (which is everyone) can help! Download this app today and record frogs in the Jaliigirr area. Continued data collection by citizen scientists, through projects such as FrogID, remain powerful tools. They allow information to be gathered quickly and at scale.
24.01.2022 This is exactly the work of Jaliigirr Biodiversity Alliance and The Great Eastern Ranges Initiative. Ecologists and conservationists have been working for decades to create wildlife corridors areas of natural habitat that can reconnect fragmented habitats. These projects have ranged from small-scale efforts to build safe passage over highways to major conservation efforts protecting millions of acres.
24.01.2022 Rachel Carson died 14/4/1964 having effected nothing less than the awakening of the environmental conscience. We all owe her much. This is from Brain Pickings
24.01.2022 Mountain lion numbers are dwindling due to the highways that fragment their habitat. Soon, wildlife experts hope to rejoin these lions with a large highway overpass disguised as a continuation of the wild hills to restore genetic diversity to this iconic species.
22.01.2022 Short video from Canada on habitat connectivity. The "Ecological Corridors: a climate change adaptation strategy project" aims at mobilizing communities, land managers, woodlot owners and farmers to conserve important ecological corridors in Quebec. This project is coordinated by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in Quebec and implemented with our many partners.
22.01.2022 A new study finds that protected areas preserve more than just species. They save what’s known as functional diversity, the critical variation of traits within species.
22.01.2022 Jaliigirr Biodiversity Alliance is pleased to partner with WWF-Australia on some of its habitat connectivity work which benefits koalas. #savethekoaladay
21.01.2022 From The Revelator. The habitat of Atlantic Salmon in the US is so disconnected that the fish are driven in trucks to get past one dam. In New England, only 1 000 fish a year return to spawn.
19.01.2022 The Pacific Rim National Park Reserve (Canada) recently installed three tunnels under the highway between Tofino and Ucluelet to help amphibians migrate across the landscape without getting run over by motorists. #habitatconnectivity
19.01.2022 Just as Jaliigirr Biodiversity Alliance is a partner of the The Great Eastern Ranges Initiative, so too are a group around the Border Ranges. Share this post if you have Facebook friends up north.
19.01.2022 It's planet gazing time. Mars is almost as close to earth as it gets which means it is really, really bright. Astronomers call it perihelic opposition. Mars will be brightest on October 13, but it is still especially bright now. It will rise at 7:50 tonight. Celebrate the dark(ish) skies of the Jaliigirr area! Go aside and look at the sky. You won't miss Mars - it's the red one.
18.01.2022 ...and for Apple devices.
17.01.2022 Another opportunity to collect and share data. It is difficult to overestimate the importance citizen scientists play in collecting information that can then inform practice and policy. Download it now!
17.01.2022 Few environmental campaigns in China have been so enthusiastically pursued or so controversial as its Great Green Wall. But there are messy bits.
16.01.2022 Do you know an individual or organisation who deserves public recognition for their work protecting Australia’s native plants and animals from environmental weeds, diseases or pest animals? Anyone in the Jaliigirr space? Nominations close October 30.
16.01.2022 Our research shows 40 per cent of the terrestrial planet is intact, but only 9.7 per cent of Earth’s terrestrial protected network can be considered structurally connected. Only nine countries and territories maintain greater than 50 per cent connectivity." Jaliigirr Biodiversity Alliance and The Great Eastern Ranges Initiative working together to improve this #connectivity.
15.01.2022 We have lots of wetlands in the Jaliigirr area. Ever wondered about the soils? Yes? Then wonder no more.
15.01.2022 What kills those big trees in tropical forests, the trees that hold lots of carbon? We don't know...yet.
14.01.2022 Powerful Owls are found in the Jaliigirr landscape, and we're kind to find out where. Great chance to get involved in this citizen science project.

14.01.2022 For more than 30 years, a community in the central Philippines has been actively involved in reforesting and protecting a mangrove site, which has expanded from 50 hectares to 220 hectares. Replanting the mangroves has paid off, with the forest shielding the community from the extreme impacts of the typhoons that routinely tear through the Philippines.

10.01.2022 "We need a different kind of infrastructure entirely, one that accommodates the natural world and puts the long-term needs of ecosystems before the knee-jerk urges of all of us so eager to get back to life as we knew it" - from the US, but equally applicable to Australia. #habitatconnectivity

08.01.2022 The ocean’s vegetated habitats (like mangroves and salt marshes) cover less than two per cent of the ocean floor, but they hold over half of the carbon stored in ocean sediments. Australia has lots of coast line to be connected, and that does and can hold carbon.
05.01.2022 Just as Jaliigirr Biodiversity Alliance is part of The Great Eastern Ranges Initiative, so too is Central Victorian Biolinks Alliance Inc. They recently ran a symposium one Gliders. This is one of the discussions on Glideways
05.01.2022 Sometimes, maintaining habitat, and connectivity, goes hand in hand with maintaining lifestyles of people living in and near that habitat. COVID-19 has changed ecotourism for 2020, and the lives of people who depend upon it. Biodiversity may suffer.
03.01.2022 An update on the last story....the US State department is dropping a controversial proposal for restoring endangered Atlantic salmon to the Kennebec River. It's a bit watch-this-space. #habitatconnectivity
