23.01.2022 Thanks to local filmmaker Peter Oldham, the story of James Austin, his ferry service and the cottage has been made into a film! Please join us on the 14th of Fe...bruary in celebrating the production of the film. To be launched by Senior Producer of Tasmania Performs, Annette Downs, the event will be a wonderful celebration of Austin's life and achievements. 22.01.2022 We had an AMAZING garden working bee at the cottage yesterday. 14 adults, three helpful children and two dogs cam and the attached picture shows the result. Christie Johnson (Mayor), Glenorchy Rotary Club members and other Friends of the cottage worked hard to clear the weeds. Thank you to everyone who came. Thank to Glenorchy City Council for removing the large pile of green waste. The garden is looking good...nice and fresh!

22.01.2022 James Austin's Cottage has copies of Hobart author Sue Cox's book "Banished Beyond the seas" for sale. A novel based on convict lives around Hobart and the Old Beach region. Come and buy one now!

21.01.2022 The challenge: There are now 266 Tiger Track stamps in Tasmania and I have decided to aim for 300 by the end of the year. This is my way to help invigorate Tasm...anian tourism. So...please contact me if you manage a venue and would like to have a Tiger Track stamp. The total (one off) cost is $85 which includes the design, stamp, ink pad, signage and presence on the Tiger Track website. Or send me suggestions of places you know of which might bea potential stamp venue. I only need 34 more stamps to reach 300! But I need your help. Suggestions please! Thanks! Big discount for 'not for profit' venues. See more

13.01.2022 I opened the cottage for my cousin and her family on Monday. Excellent colouring in record time!

12.01.2022 I am sad to say that our application for a Community Fund grant to create a heritage garden for James Austin's Cottage was rejected even before it was considered. We failed to tick a box relating to GST and also made an accounting error, so our application didn't get through to even the first stage. It is very disappointing...we are determined to create a beautiful garden so we just need to wait for another funding opportunity. It was my fault...

11.01.2022 One of my favourite things at the cottage is the beautiful pine dresser but one of the knobs kept falling off. I tried a few things which didn't work and then on Sunday a volunteer came armed with thicker dowel and sand paper and the knob is now secure!!! Thank you Anna! Nothing quite like a secure knob!

The lady had re-upholstered this unusual chair but years ago handed it over to the tip shop. Thankfully it was rescued by someone and I found it in an antique shop in New Norfolk. They were so happy and surprised to find their chair in its perfect new home at James Austin's Cottage.
