11.01.2022 I’m about 8 years old and I’m on the vinyl back seat of Dad’s car with my sisters. My legs are sticky. Parched paddocks, haystacks and leaning stone farmhouses fly by. We’re listening to Watership Down on cassette, transfixed. My dad has a beautiful way of leading us to the big stuff. My middle sister asks Dad to pause the story for a moment. Silence other than engine hum. Then she says, so clearly it goes straight to my heart; ... One day I will have a field where rabbits and foxes love each other. I’m suddenly watery-eyed, seeing the landscape slide and feeling tingly all over. A naive yearning? Perhaps, but who doesn’t look out at the world and wish for peace? It’s easy to think that peace on earth is pure fantasy, though, beyond reach. After all, where would we even begin? Though we may feel in our bones a thousand ways in which THEY might act differently to bring peace, the only place we have agency is in OUR next move. Though we may taste a thousand words THEY might speak to bring peace, the only place we have agency is in OUR next word. Though we may know a thousand ways in which THEY might think differently to bring peace, the only place we have agency is in OUR next thought. Peace on earth is not a one-day thing. It’s a right now thing. A right here thing. It’s how we bring ourselves in this moment to those we cherish, and to those we find challenging. The only meaningful contribution we can make to peace on earth is how we hold ourselves, and others, in this moment. #comebacktoloveretreat @raefallon
