22.01.2022 On Saturday evening, I had the pleasure of representing @beyondblueofficial at the 2019 Australian @alliedhealthawards. Beyond Blue was the charity partner of the awards event. It was a great night, celebrating the hard work, the dedication and the success of many allied health professionals, who are doing exceptional things for the wellbeing of others. It was also a fantastic opportunity to present about Beyond Blue - the service innovation work and the programmatic work we conduct with all Australian’s to promote mental health and wellbeing where they live, work and play. #mentalhealth #workplacementalhealth #mentallyhealthyworkplaces #awardsdinner #charitypartner #alliedhealth #wellbeing #healthservices

21.01.2022 Fantastic news to come out of QLD. Earlier this month, QLD Industrial Relations Minister, Grace Grace, announced presumptive workers’ compensation laws for first responders diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder. As a former QLD Police Officer with a diagnosis of work related PTSD, I warmly welcome this development. From our Beyond Blue National Mental Health and Wellbeing Study of Police and Emergency Services, and the world-first quantitative survey that underpins... the study, ‘Answering the Call’ (ATC), we know that the current workers’ compensation process does not seem to be serving claimants well. ATC survey responses indicate that three quarters of employees making workers’ compensation claims found the process to be unsupportive and stressful, and negatively impacting their recovery. Additionally, emergency services personnel have the highest rate of claims related to mental health of any occupation. In a statement, Grace outlined that the new laws will mean first responders and other prescribed workers and volunteers who are simultaneously struggling to cope with PTSD will not have to prove their injury is work-related. https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/90408 #emergencyservices #ptsd #mentalhealth
20.01.2022 Doing a bit of a clean out to make room for bub’s arrival. In doing so, I came across a few momentos from conferences, events and campaigns that I’ve been fortunate to be a part of during my work at Beyond Blue. Sometimes it’s helpful to look back at the incredible experiences I’ve had in this role and the opportunities to share information about mentally healthy workplaces in police and emergency services sector and my personal lived experience of post traumatic stress disorder #ptsd #mentalhealth #emergencyservices
19.01.2022 Today was a very important day. I was honoured to be a guest at the joint @qldpolice, FBG Group and @beyondblueofficial mental health strategy and action plan workshop. A very special thank you to Jonathan Norton for facilitating this significant conversation. The workshop was a collaborative display of innovation and commitment to the mental health and wellbeing of the Queensland Police Service workforce. Today was also an important day for me - the first time walking on to... the Academy grounds since 2010. I am grateful to be able to contribute to meaningful conversations that have the potential to make a real impact - to protect those who protect us. #mentalhealth #police #workplacementalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #firstresponders #QPSA #QPS #mentalhealthstrategy #conversation @ Police Academy, Oxley.

14.01.2022 Late last year I was fortunate to share a conversation with Lisa Leong, the host of the ABC Radio National ‘This Working Life’ podcast. During this podcast episode, I shared my story as a former police officer, my journey with trauma and my mental health diagnosis. Ultimately, the trauma that I faced at work led me to leaving a job I loved. This podcast conversation also covers my pursuit of mental health advocacy for the lived experience community and systems level change.... We need to retire the unhelpful stereotype that all emergency services workers are made of steel and reinforce the idea that it’s OK to not be OK and it’s OK to seek support. To listen, head to the ABC Listen app, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or your favourite podcast app. You can also access the episode here: https://www.abc.net.au//this-working/new-document/13103286 #mentalhealth #ptsd #mentalhealthadvocacy #livedexperience #podcast #emergencyservices #firstresponders #itsokaynottobeokay
14.01.2022 Incredibly powerful things happen when the emergency services sector unites. Often, the services come together to protect life and property of the Australian community in times of critical emergency. This time, it's to help each other. To ask a very important question - R U OK? The R U OK Day 'Are They Triple OK?' campaign is a resource for emergency services personnel, their peers and their family to help guide meaningful conversations. It equips people with the tools to hel...p those who help us. Being prepared to have regular and sincere conversations about mental health and wellbeing is one way you can help anyone who may be struggling to feel supported. The campaign seeks to support workers at home and in the workplace to encourage early intervention and help-seeking behaviours I am so immensely proud to be a member of the Advisory Group for this campaign. It was a privilege to contribute to the direction and content of this resource. A huge shout out to the incredible team behind the scenes at R U OK? Find out more at www.ruok.org.au

13.01.2022 It was an absolute pleasure to represent @beyondblueofficial as a keynote speaker at the 2019 Frontline Mental Health Conference, hosted by the Australian & New Zealand Mental Health Association. This morning, I shared the work conducted in the Beyond Blue Police and Emergency Services Program, including providing insights about the importance of mentally healthy workplaces and the ground breaking research conducted in the Beyond Blue National Mental Health and Wellbeing Stu...dy of Police and Emergency Services, and the survey that underpins the National Study, 'Answering the Call'. It was incredible to share the stage with two of Australia's most decorated people - Sir Angus Houston AK AC AFC and Allan Sparkes CV,OAM,VA,FRSN. It's fantastic to see the developments in the police and emergency services sector. Opportunities like this help build a dedicated and collective effort to ensure that we strengthen our approach to protecting those who protect us to bring mental health out of the shadows and into everyday conversations. We look forward to continuing this important work with the Australian emergency services community in the Beyond Blue Police and Emergency Services Program. #fmhc #mentalhealth #workplacementalhealth #research #keynote #presentation #firstresponders #frontline #police #fire #ambulance #SES @ Townsville, Queensland
13.01.2022 Today is #PTSD awareness day. Many of you would know that I have PTSD - a mental health diagnosis given after cumulative exposure to occupational trauma from my time employed as a Queensland Police Officer. I’m regularly challenged by my PTSD symptoms and how symptoms impact the way I experience the world around me. However, after nearly 8 years of living with this condition, I have many self-care and professional supports in place, and I feel well (often thriving) in many a...spects of life. I also know that it’s okay not to be okay, and to put my hand up and ask for help when I’m struggling. I share this because the more people know about PTSD the better. In relation to help-seeking, perceived and self stigma remain major barriers to accessing and seeking support. We can improve this by sharing lived experience stories of mental health challenges. We can improve this by accessing support for our own mental health challenges and encouraging others to do the same. We can improve this by creating supportive workplaces - effectively managing risks to mental health at work, promoting the positives of work and worker strengths, and supporting people with a mental health condition to remain at or return to work. Visit Phoenix Australia for more info on PTSD. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #ptsd #support

09.01.2022 Last week, I was fortunate to share a conversation with Tiffanee Cook, host of the Roll With The Punches podcast. Tiffanee’s podcast is a powerful vehicle for authentic and impactful conversations. It’s one of my all time favourites. Over the last few months, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed tuning in as a listener. It was an honour to join as a guest. During this podcast episode, I shared my story as a former police officer, my journey with trauma and my mental health diagnosis. 07.01.2022 10 years ago, at the age of 21, I started the journey of becoming a Queensland Police Officer. So much has happened since then. Countless exposure to critical incidents, the adrenaline rush of being a first responder, the serious and protracted criminal investigations, serving the Queensland community to protect life and property. It was an incredible job and I’m so proud to have served beside some of the most professional and skilled officers in the state. Unfortunately, it... was not the long term job for me, as I sustained a workplace mental health injury - a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Mental health challenges can be deeply personal and often difficult to see. It’s why I ultimately had to leave the Police Service. 10 years later, I have found there is tremendous strength in practicing self love and acceptance. I’ve also found that with the right supports in place, it’s very possible to feel well in many aspects of life, thrive and achieve more than you could possible imagine. To intake 1/2010 - I feel so grateful to have learned the job beside you. To those still in the job, stay safe out there. To those who have left, I hope you’ve found peace and can look back fondly on what was, for the most part, a fantastic career choice. #10yearanniversary #police #firstresponder #mentalhealth #ptsd
05.01.2022 Today is an important today. September 10 marks R U OK Day and #worldsuicidepreventionday. It is a national day of action, where we we are reminded that every day is an opportunity to ask, are you OK? If someone is struggling or impacted by the challenges and ups and downs of life. To me, it’s one of the most important days on the calendar. While today is a great prompt to start a conversation and a national day of action, every day is an opportunity to check in with thos...e who we notice might not be OK. 2020 has been a tough one for many. Starting a conversation, listening, encouraging action and checking in regularly can have such a profound impact for those who are finding this year especially challenging. While it can be difficult to talk about suicide, or even to start the conversation, research conducted by Beyond Blue shows you can have a positive influence on someone who may be considering suicide by initiating a conversation with them and supporting them to seek support. This is an important message, as you you don’t need to be a clinician, a GP, or a nurse to check-in with someone you are worried about. It is OK to let someone know you have noticed they are struggling and ask them if they are experiencing thoughts of suicide. On a personal note, I really love the work of R U OK? and thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to collaborate with this organisation in my role at Beyond Blue. R U OK? inspires and empowers people to connect and have meaningful conversations with anyone who may be struggling with life. I believe in the power of conversation and R U OK? demonstrates that a conversation has the potential to change a life. For more on how to have a conversation with someone you may be concerned about, head to the R U OK? website. If someone is in crisis, be sure to make contact with Lifeline. If there is danger to life, call 000. #ruok #ruokday #worldsuicidepreventionday #suicideprevention #conversation
02.01.2022 The recent news that four Victoria Police members were killed following a vehicle intercept is heartbreaking. Last night, today and always, I stand beside those officers, their family, friends and colleagues. Many will be hurting today and for quite some time. Emergency services personnel around the country both current and former, will also be hurting. A death in the emergency services family is felt very profoundly regardless of geography. It may have been several years ...since I've worn a uniform, but family is family. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with many during this incredibly challenging time. If you or others require assistance, please know that there are supports available. Substantial support is offered internally at police and emergency services agencies. There are also supports available externally including Beyond Blue (ph: 1300 22 4636) and Lifeline (ph: 13 1114). Both organisations are available 24 hours / 7 days a week. You can also talk to someone you trust, contact your GP, a counselor, psychologist or psychiatrist. Yours in health, James
