18.01.2022 I never had a weight problem until I turned 40. The weight just doesn’t come off like it used to. Sound familiar Menopause is a topic that many women dread as they head towards their late 30’s and into their 40’s but it’ something that none of us can avoid. Perimenopause will generally start in our 40’s but it can begin as early as our mid-30’s, bringing along with it many unwanted changes. These changes can include weight gain, loss of lean body mass (muscle), bone heal...th concerns as well as an increased chronic disease risk. The good news about all of this is that there are lifestyle and nutrition changes that can be made to reduce the risk of these unwanted changes. Over the next few weeks, we will be bringing you information to improve your health and nutrition as you head towards, and through, menopause. Leading up to and throughout menopause women will generally gain an average of 0.5kg per year between age 45-55, with a total gain of 2.3kg during menopause. Due to hormonal changes there is a gain in body fat, especially visceral fat, which increases the risk of chronic conditions including diabetes, coronary heart disease and hypertension. Women will also experience a loss of about 1% lean body mass (muscle) each year, especially if they are inactive. Bone health is at an increased risk with many women losing up to 20% bone density during menopause, as well as common symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, and reduced sleep. When nutrition is effectively managed during menopause it can result in healthy weight management and body composition, decreased risk of chronic disease, improved bone density and less severe symptoms. If you are concerned about your nutrition or health leading up to or during menopause, make sure you keep an eye out over the coming weeks to learn some new tips, common mistakes and some practical ideas for simple but nutritious meals and snacks. Got a specific question about WOMEN'S HEALTH NUTRITION? Comment your questions below and we'll include it for you We hope you all enjoy our Pregnancy Nutrition Series over the coming weeks

If you or someone you know is experiencing any mental health conditions, or you just want to make improvements to your overall mental health, stay tuned as we bring you simple tips and information to ensure you have a happy, health mind. Mental health is extremely important, and a balanced diet can have major impacts on brain function, mood as well... as reduced anxiety and depression. We are now beginning to understand the significant impact diet can have on depression and other mental health conditions. When nutrition quality is low and dietary patterns are unhealthy, we see an increased risk of depression, and often anxiety. There is a lot of evidence to show that diet can not only help improve current mental health conditions but can actually prevent them from occurring. If you are concerned about your nutrition and mental health, make sure you keep an eye out over the coming weeks to learn some new tips, common mistakes and some practical ideas for simple but nutritious meals and snacks.
