25.01.2022 A long one about the development needed to be able to blow your nose (some really great info) BUT head to the bottom and some great tips on how to teach your child how to blow their nose - a very important skill with these August flu’s arriving.
25.01.2022 As a parent we teach our children to use a spoon, ride a bike, swim in a pool - but when it comes to teaching emotional resilience we often struggle on how to - little people have big emotions that often we as adults don’t know how to support it - little people feel sad, angry, happy, scared, anxious just like big people - little people haven’t developed the thought processes and communication skills adults have to understand what they are feeling or why - they look to adults to help them process and learn. Some children find it hard to make that connection just like some children find it hard to ride a bike or kick a football. Acknowledging your child’s feelings is an important part of emotional learning.

18.01.2022 ... This first critical period of brain development begins around age 2 and concludes around age 7. It provides a prime opportunity to lay the foundation for a holistic education for children. Four ways to maximize this critical period include encouraging a love of learning, focusing on breadth instead of depth, paying attention to emotional intelligence, and not treating young children’s education as merely a precursor to real learning.... Learning through play is so important for early years - Einstein wasn’t enrolled in physics classes at age 4 - he had delayed speech - he was encouraged to explore and love learning. He was encouraged to develop emotional intelligence with resilience and empathy for others - this is why we love our job .. we work with the most intelligent humans in the universe ..
16.01.2022 Successful reading and writing skills start with early motor development (not flash cards or apps) - the importance of movement and being able to learn through play for sensory integration is explained beautifully in this article. It’s why early years teachers will often refer parents to Paediatric Occupational Therapists (OT’s) for children with attention and focus difficulties or rigidity in routine and emotional regulation - sensory integration begins at birth and every mi...lestone is just as important as the last. The miracle of human development is that these milestones and what appears to be random sequences of movements are all part of the bigger picture of our ability to learn in later life. Sometimes these milestones don’t connect when they need to (for no apparent reason) - that is where early intervention with trained therapists can support and help children’s learning - just like a swimming coach teaches children to swim, sometimes children need a sensory integration coach (OT) or speech and language coach (Speech Therapist) or an emotional coach (psychologist) to help refine skill and milestone development through play. Encourage the tummy time even when they don’t seem to like it; savour the crawling phase even when you are wishing they would walk; keep offering the crunchy savoury foods even when their preference is for the white, smooshie sweet stuff, answer the 50 million why questions every day to build those language and conversational skills; and love them unconditionally even on the days it has been the hardest - development and learning is based on human connection and sensory integration from those moments. 15.01.2022 Eight years ago we began our Kindy renovations - the whole building was gutted from the inside, the uneven floor on stumps removed and asbestos removed to give us the building we have today. This wouldn’t have been possible without government grants and the generosity of Dall Designer Homes. Seems like forever ago yet only yesterday ...

11.01.2022 With school holidays just around the corner - you may like to have a look at this new family friendly walk. What are some of your family favourite experiences that get your family outside?
10.01.2022 Big emotions in those toddler and kindy years can be exhausting when you are a parent. Helping little people to make sense of those big emotions by giving them the language - I can see you are sad and angry we have to stop playing to go to bed. I know it’s hard to stop doing things we enjoy but it’s not okay to throw your toys because you are angry so we will put them away now - supporting and naming the emotional language helps children make sense of those emotions and learn to articulate those feelings into adulthood.

09.01.2022 MURAL UNVEILED, BOOK LAUNCHED AT KINDY Kids’ visions for their community have been translated in to a prominent mural, unveiled last week at Nambour Community P...reschool & Kindergarten. We've been able to work with artist Jess Foulds, and share with her our vision for our community and our connection to country that's based on what the children have shared with us. Jess has taken those words and turned them into a truly magical, inspirational piece, said Kindergarten co-director Katrina List. Katrina was grateful for a $1000 grant from Sundale Community Foundation which enabled the kindy to connect with Kerry Neil from Triballink who introduced Jess. Katrina said the mural encouraged connection with the country and with the things that matter to us: like Petrie Creek and the wildlife in our world. We teach the children the Kabi Kabi way of only taking what we need and giving back to our earth, she said. So we're very proud to be a part of teaching the next generation about caring for their country as well. Jess said the mural reflected the wildlife on land around the kindy. I was told about the wildlife that lived at the kindy and around the kindy, she said. Petrie Creek, which everyone knows is our main creek around here, is full of turtles. And the trees out the back are full of the red-breasted honeyeater. The mural features on the wall of the kindy on the corner of James and Howard Street. It’s wonderful that between us we have created something like this, said Kerry. Jess is a fantastic artist and she's a very, very, very beautiful person. Earlier the kindy also hosted the official launch of a new book Kabi Kabi Kids illustrated by Jess and written by Kerry. To have Kerry do the first public read of the story with our yellow group was a special memory where he shared the children in the story are his family, said Katrina. Triballink is based at Mapleton and delivers Indigenous education activities, aids, resources & services according to its cultural and spiritual values. The kindergarten has begun enrolment process for 2021 and have limited vacancies available. Background In 2019, Nambour Community Preschool & Kindergarten staff and families began the journey of developing a Reconciliation Action Plan. They wanted to create a greater connection between the students and the traditional owners of our lands - the Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi Community. The Kindergarten community wanted the children to understand the importance of caring for country and only taking what they needed from the land and that by caring for country our country will continue to care for us. Sundale Community Foundation offer grants each year with a focus on improving outcomes for children and young people as well as for indigenous Australians. The Kindy application was based on connecting with a local indigenous artist to commission an original indigenous artwork that embraced the Kindy’s philosophy and beliefs as part of their streetscape of the building. TribalLink put the Kindy in contact with Jess who shared the projects she had been working on with Kerry. The Kindy decided this was a great fit with its RAP and philosophy and began the process of consulting the children on their understanding of caring for country, a reflection of the native flora and fauna in our surroundings and fused it with a contemporary indigenous art style. The end result is the masterpiece we unveiled on Wednesday. Pictured from left Kerry Neil, Christine Jones from Sundale Community Foundation, Jess Foulds, Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt and Katrina List front the mural which features turtles and red-breasted honeyeaters. Wunya is Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi for welcome and the circle symbol means special place. 03.01.2022 COVID-19 has been detected in the water entering Maroochydore sewerage treatment plant. This testing does not tell us whether the people who shed the virus were... sick or infectious at the time. This kind of result could also occur if someone who was a case from another region passed through the Sunshine Coast. There are no known cases of COVID-19 in the Sunshine Coast region at the moment, but this finding shows we must all take the risk of COVID-19 seriously. We’re asking residents to get tested, even if it’s just for mild symptoms. That’s the only way we can be sure that the virus is not spreading locally. Testing people for COVID-19 protects our communities from a potential outbreak and keeps the Sunshine Coast open for business. Testing is free for everyone including foreign nationals. People should stay home till they are well and their test is clear, with results usually available the next day. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health service COVID-19 testing clinics are located below. Residents must pre-register by phoning 1300 163 044 (a GP referral is not required). Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, P2 car park, Doherty St, Birtinya Caloundra Health Service, West Tce, Caloundra Nambour General Hospital, Hospital Road, Nambour
