19.01.2022 My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26 One of our most majestic hymns, O Worship the King, says: Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, / In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail. ... We are frail and feeble, and our flesh and our heart may fail. Some people feel like failures, and others face failures beyond their control. We’re sometimes tempted to think God has failed. Even the prophet Jeremiah said in Jeremiah 15:18, Will You surely be to me like an unreliable stream, as waters that fail? But later, in Lamentations 3:22, Jeremiah affirmed, His compassions fail not. Nor do His promises. Joshua 21:45 says, Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass. Jesus echoed that truth, saying, And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail (Luke 16:17). If you’re encountering failure right now, turn around and encounter your matchless Lord. Take courage! Jesus never fails. Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end, / Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.
18.01.2022 For the love of Christ compels us. 2 Corinthians 5:14 Child actor Keith Thibodeaux became an overnight sensation as Little Ricky on the TV show, I Love Lucy, and later as Opie’s friend, Johnny Paul, on The Andy Griffith Show. After his youthful acting career ended, he joined a rock band and, in the 1970s, battled depression and drug abuse. My mother invited me to a church meeting in Louisiana, he said. It was in this meeting that I became a Christian, that Jesus Christ cam...e into my life. Today, Keith and his wife lead a fine arts ministry aimed at sharing the Gospel through ballet. Overnight sensations often awaken the next morning to find the glamor tarnished and the success fleeting. But when we’re filled with God’s compassionate love, we’re happier, stronger, and useful. True success isn’t overnight; it’s eternal. Fame and fortune may be God’s will for a few. It’s the devil’s trap for many. Only the love of Jesus satisfies us forever. There is no fullness of joy anywhere except in Christ. God has made the human heart so only He Himself can fill it. All the pleasures of the world, all the riches of earth, though they may bring a temporary thrill, leave unsatisfied the longing of the heart.
05.01.2022 Before His death, Jesus underwent six trials; the first three were religious trials. John 18:13 says, [They] led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. Annas was a previous high priest. The religious leaders thought if they got his stamp of approval, they would be home free. So they took Jesus to Annas, who questioned Him about His teachings. Jesus said, I spoke nothing in secret. Why do you question Me? Question those who ...have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said (vv. 20-21). Then one of the officers struck Jesus and said, Is that the way You answer the high priest? Jesus answered, If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me? (vv. 22-23). What court of law do you know where physical violence is allowed? The whole thing was a sham. The religious leaders did not have an answer for Jesus, so they took Him to Caiaphas. That was the second trial. Look at Matthew 26:63-65: The high priest said to Him, ‘I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.’ Jesus said to him, ‘You have said it yourself; nevertheless, I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.’ Then the high priest tore his robes and said, ‘He has blasphemed!’ Why was Caiaphas so upset? Jesus was quoting Daniel 7:13, which was a prophecy about the coming Messiah. He was saying, I am the Son of God. I am equal to God Himself. That sent Caiaphas over the edge. In verses 65-66, he said, ‘You have now heard the blasphemy, what do you think?’ They answered. ‘He deserves death!’ That led to the third trial, the trial before the Sanhedrin, around 6 a.m. The Sanhedrin was kind of like the Supreme Court of Israel. It comprised seventy elders, and Caiaphas was the presiding officer. Look at Luke 22:70: And they all said, ‘Are You the Son of God, then?’ And He said to them, ‘Yes, I am.’ Make no doubt about it: Jesus claimed to be the Son of God. A lot of people say, I believe Jesus was a great teacher, a tremendous moral example. Sorry, that is not an option. C. S. Lewis famously explained why you cannot say with any intellectual honesty that Jesus was just a good man. The fact is, He claimed to be the Son of God. Because of this, Lewis said, there are only three possibilities about who He was. One, He was a liar who went around trying to trick people. That does not sound like a tremendous moral example. Two, He was a lunatic. He thought He was the Son of God, even though He was not. There is only one other alternative, and that is Jesus is Lord. He is who He claimed to be. And if Jesus is Lord, then you and I have to take seriously everything He said. He said there is a heaven and there is a hell. He said there is only one way to escape hell, and that is through faith in Him. Jesus claimed to be God because He was God.
04.01.2022 So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Acts 20:32 At the reading of a Will, an attorney reads the last Will and Testament of the deceased to family members and beneficiaries. In addition to specifying inheritances, the deceased might also write final thoughts: desires, priorities, and hopes. A person’s last words are often a summary of what they conside...red most important. When the apostle Paul wrote his final letter to young Timothy, his priority was clear: I charge you. Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching (2 Timothy 4:1-2). As a young leader, Paul reminded Timothy how best to build up the Churchby preaching and teaching the Word of God. Paul’s reasoning? There would be many who would use false teaching to tear down the Church (verses 3-4).Only the truth of the Word can build up and make the Body of Christ strong. Building the Church relies on building church members. Build yourself up daily by studying the Word of God. The best way to revive a church is to build a fire in the pulpit.
01.01.2022 As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue. 2 Peter 1:3 Often, we gather what we think we need: everything we need to begin life in college, everything we need to welcome a firstborn child into our home, everything we need to get our children back to school in Septemberbut invariably we discover we have forgotten something. Try as we might, it’s hard to be fully prepared f...or life. Or is it? The apostle Peter wrote that God has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness. That isn’t a guarantee that our checklist for every life circumstance will be perfectly completed. But it does mean, when it comes to living a godly life, we have everything we need in Christ. By knowing God through Christ, we have access to His character and resources that abide in us. Paul characterized these traits in Galatians 5:22-23 as the fruit of the Spirit. Peter’s list includes faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love (2 Peter 1:5-7). Just as Christ lacked nothing in His life, we have everything we need for our life through Him. Let God’s promises shine on your problems.
