25.01.2022 With restrictions starting to ease some of the markets are returning. This Saturday the Drouin Rotary Craft and Produce Market is back on in Young Street Drouin but the weather forecast is not so good therefore I have decided to make it easier and quicker for customers to pre order products and then just pick up and pay at the market. Just send me your order via message or email before 6pm Friday and I will have it ready for you to pick up and pay between 8.30 and 11 am. 11.01.2022 Produce & Product Profile - Citrus - #1 Cumquat / Kumquat.There are a number of Citrus varieties that I use in my products with Lemons the most frequently used, but Cumquats are my absolute favourite. There are a couple of varieties (botanical names of which I shall excluded as they get complicated in this case) which I have used, the oval shaped or the round variety. The round (Marumi) is the one I prefer and I have 2 trees, a standard & regular both of which produce good ha...rvests, although the standard is situated in a better position therefore usually a more abundant crop.The plant is native to China and they have long been cultivated in India, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia. They were introduced to Europe in 1846 by Robert Fortune, collector for the London Horticultural Society, and shortly thereafter were taken to North America. The round fruit has quite a tang and not always to everyone's taste, but for those who enjoy the flavour it's hard to by pass any opportunity. The main product I manufacture with the cumquat is marmalade, followed then by the Cumquats in Cointreau and recently when I still had an abundant supply I pickled some. The marmalade is ideal spread on toast or you can add it to your favourite fruit cake recipe in place of mixed peel. The Cumquats in Cointreau make a great dessert served with double cream or vanilla ice cream, and the syrup a delicious liqueur. With the pickled Cumquats you can cut them in quarters and serve in a green leafy salad combined with a soft, sharp cheese. Marmalade available in 220g jars @ $6.50 ea, or 100g jars @$4.50.
