21.01.2022 Hi there. This is your 'absent' captain speaking. I'm so sorry to have neglected this page. I'm not sure what to write about, as it's a while since I've organised a gig for this group. The last time we played was at my birthday celebration in December 2018, and then it was only a few tunes, but with the superb Jim Glasson on tenor sax, Rory Clarke on piano, Leon Heale on Bass and Luke Andressen on drums. Perhaps it would be good if I listed a few recordings that inspired me to start the group in the first place, so let's see: J. J. Johnson's recordings with Belgian tenor sax player Bobby Jaspar blew me away when I first heard them. I had to get 'I should care' into the repertoire straight away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNrD_ewGTbU

21.01.2022 Next up is Curtis Fuller's quintet with Benny Golson on tenor sax. So smo-o-o-t-th! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DKeYXG5gwk

12.01.2022 Then there's a lovely CD I found of tenor sax player Fraser McPherson with trombonist Ian McDougall.Unfortunately I can't find it on YouTube, so I can't refer you to it. The CD is called "In The Tradition" and there are tunes like "Louisiana" and "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" on it that get a great treatment. Next is the Sonny Rollins/J. J. Johnson quintet with rhythm section of Horace Silver/Thelonious Monk, Paul Chambers and Art Blakey roaring through some superb tracks, such as 'Wail March' (some march!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uob_uYlCKm0

05.01.2022 Well, that's it for the moment. All those YouTube links will guide you to all the other tracks on those great LPs. Happy listening for you, while I get on with putting some more of those tunes into the Quince Jam book, and then it's out gigging wherever we can find a venue. Hope to see you there. Cheers. Don.

02.01.2022 G'day everyone. Just as I was getting us prepared for some concerts, along comes the killer virus and everything gets shut down. No-one knows when we can get together again even to rehearse, let alone play for all you lovely people. You might like to seek out on, say, Spotify or YouTube some of the things we are going to play for you when the going gets good again. Among these are: Hank Mobley's "The Changing Scene", "The Feelin's Good" and "Hank's Tune"... Curtis Fuller's "Sweetness" Vincent Youmans' "Tea For Two" J. C. Johnson's "Louisiana" Lil Hardin's "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" Cahn, Stordahl and Weston's "I Should Care" arranged by J. J. Johnson Matt Dennis' "Everything Happens To Me" There's so much lovely music we want to share with you, not only in Melbourne but in country Victoria also. If you have an arts program or group in your city or town and you think they would support a concert by us, please put us in touch with them. We'll be so glad to get out and about again after our long (but necessary) isolation, that it will be such a pleasure to visit and meet you. Stay well
