23.01.2022 This morning Col and Mike, with Gina in support, travelled down to Serpentine to compete in the ATTA 40km time trial there. This is 4 laps of a 10km circuit with a slight uphill climb away from the start line down Karnup Road towards Serpentine and returning along a couple of scenic country backroads in what is basically a rectangular course. The usual annoying wind coming off the eastern escarpment added to the drag up Karnup Road to the first turn and while it was only abo...ut 16kph in strength it gradually wore the energy down over the laps. Col left the start box first and rode a consistent race, with lap times within 30seconds of each other for a total time of 1hr 1min 10.1sec for an average speed of almost 39kph. This saw him place 11th in his age-group and 30th overall on Standard categorisation with the 28th fastest time in the field. Mike left the start box around 15minutes after Col and timed his laps within 10seconds of each other for a total time out on course of 56min 40.1secs at an average speed of just under 42kph. This put him into 1st place in his age-group, 3rd overall on Standard categorisation and the 9th fastest time out on course today. Well done to both guys today and once again a huge thanks to all the volunteers out there at registration, standing at the start and finish lines, and on traffic duties on all the corners keeping the riders safe.

22.01.2022 ****UPDATE FROM STATE CHAMPS**** Well apparently this post is not correct now - somehow they found another rider in the mix and now Mike came 4th --- honestly folks don't rely on these guys to organise anything really important - lucky this is just a bike race **** Is this some sort of record? A couple of months ago 11yr old Kristeen placed 3rd in her State road champs race - yesterday (according to results just published) her poppa 60yr old Mike placed 3rd in his State ro...ad champs race... Super results for our Team and Peel District Cycling Club of which they are both members. . . . . . #peeldistrictcyclingclub

18.01.2022 This morning saw the final race of 2020 for our riders with Gina and Kristeen competing in the PDCC crit series down on the Smeaton Drive course in Rockingham. First though was the usual skills course run by Mark, which today concentrated on the skill of handing off an item to a team-mate while still riding. Gina and Kristeen practiced swapping a tennis ball between them while others swapped drink bottles or what-ever they happened to have. Then it was on to emergency stopp...ing where Gina learnt that stopping with disc brakes on her new bike was a lot quicker than the rim brakes of her old bike. Then it was on to the racing where this week Kristeen managed to stick it to Nana in their own little battle. Kristeen finished 2nd female in D-grade and Gina was 3rd. So that's it for racing this year... we'll have a recap of the Team results from the entire year in a couple of days... but for now here are some photos from today.

17.01.2022 Update from yesterday's State champs - Col finished in 8th place in a very strong field in the M50-59yr race, while Kelly finished in 12th place in the same race. Mike finished 3rd in the M60+ race.

16.01.2022 Yesterday we had three riders out competing in two seperate events across the greater Perth area. Firstly Col travelled an hour south of Perth to Jarrahdale to race in his first gravel TT in the ATTA hosted The Panther Trophy 2020. This was held across a 4km lumpy course with a total distance to be covered of 19.5km. Col reports that the event was a bitumen start, racing up a hill and then literally flying over the top into the unknown, with the sudden realisation tha...t he was on the wrong line with both wheels in the air. He thought he was a ‘gonner’ at that stage but managed to stay upright. It took two laps to find the right lines with a couple of sketchy descents where he was just holding on for the ride but by the 5th lap he was really enjoying himself and didn’t want to stop. Col’s time of 48min 24sec saw him finish in 3rd place in his age category. Remember that this was Col’s first time riding in any off-road event, and he was only entered to see how it goes for his first ride on the gravel bike in 6months - so this was a very pleasing result for him. We were hoping for some photos of Col out in the wilderness but we were out of luck this time. Meanwhile a bit further north, and closer to Perth, Kristeen and Kelly raced in a PDCC hosted kermese held on the Kwinana Motorplex. This was a 3.2km course with a strong and gusty headwind around the back of the course, and the event was 1hour + 1 lap for all grades. First off was Kristeen, entered in E grade but bumped up into D grade as she was the only entrant in her grade. This was an excellent opportunity for the 11yr old to learn how tough racing can be, she was dropped in the first lap by the far stronger D graders (all of them, bar one, adult men and women) and rode for basically the entire hour on her own, being coached by a PDCC mentor. At no stage did the young lady give up and she was still driving herself into the finish line with personal best lap times even at the end, cheered on by very proud parents and siblings. Next off was Kelly in C grade. Kelly rode a smart race today, staying near the front of the race for all but the last half lap, staying out of the wind when necessary, and moving to the front each lap to control the only climb on the course so that it was ridden at his pace and not someone else’s - smart move by the big guy and it kept him in the race until the very end. So another good day out for the Team - well done to all the riders and thanks to the organisers of both events, the volunteers (and especially Kristeen’s PDCC mentors) and to the supporters who came out to cheer them along. Next weekend we are back down at Peel on their Dog Hill circuit for another road race.

15.01.2022 This morning Gina and Kristeen, supported by Mike, travelled down to the Pinjarra industrial estate to compete in the PDCC Crit series. One of the great things about this series, besides the Little Critters race for those too young to be able to race in the grades, is that the Club puts on a free coaching session for an hour before the first race sets off for anyone wanting to learn the skills necessary for criterium racing in particular, but also bike racing generally. This... week the session focussed on identifying and riding the fastest line through a corner, so Gina and Kristeen had a crack at that and in their words "learnt heaps" thanks to Mark Gorrie the coach. So then on to the racing. Both our riders lined up in E-grade which was a 25min + 1lap race. For a while the race stayed together with Gina and Kristeen marking each other in their little Grandma/Grand-daughter rivalry, but once the eventual winner Kit Boulton attacked about half-way through, first Kristeen and then Gina tried to stay with him but couldn't quite do it and he rode away to a fine solo win. Gina came in 1st in the women's category and Kristeen in 2nd place in that category. Gina was 2nd overall in the grade with Kristeen racing for 3rd place with her young rival Xavier, with Xavier just pipping her into 4th. So a good day out for both our competitors with one more criterium race before Xmas in a couple of weeks.

15.01.2022 Yesterday saw four of our riders competing across the grades at another PDCC hosted road race on their Doghill circuit down at Baldivis. First off was Mike in B grade for 6 laps of the 10.7km course. His race went well until, with two laps to go, he lost contact heading into a headwind segment of the course, and having used too much energy chasing down several attacks earlier, and then sitting at the back having to accelerate harshly out of every turn, his 60yr old legs coul...dn’t give another effort great enough to close the gap, and he spent the next 2 laps just off the back chasing on his own until the end, finishing off the back of the main group, some 2.5 minutes behind the eventual winner. Next away was Kelly in C grade for 5 laps, and he had an absolute blinder today - by far the best ride he has had for a long time. Kelly stayed at or near the front of the race all day today, clocking PR’s all over the course and finishing in the bunch sprint at the end. Kelly’s average speed for the day was 38.53kph which is the fastest he has ever averaged in a race and he was understandably stoked with his effort as well he should be. Kelly’s time was 1hr 23:18 for the race and he finished in 14th place. 11 yr old Kristeen raced in her second actual road race today alongside her Nanna Gina in E grade over 3 laps of the course. Kristeen held with the pace until the end of lap 2 when, with muscle cramps in both legs, pulled out - never-the-less a great effort from someone just learning the sport and what it requires to be able to compete. Gina on the other hand did complete the entire distance even though she managed to get herself lost out on the course (something to do with a horse apparently and then a wrong turn etc etc and ending up at Karnup Road somehow). There was much hilarity at the finish line when that story came out. Anyway not a bad effort from a grandmother of 6! Thanks to the organisers, the volunteers and to the supporters who came out to cheer them along. So that was that - next week it’s the WA State Road Champs over at York with Col, Kelly and Mike entered from our Team.

14.01.2022 Well, that's almost another year gone - and what a weird year it has been... This morning both the Race Team and Cycling Team got together for an easy cruise in and around Kings Park before returning to our home base at Yolanda's Cafe for our annual Xmas Breakfast, joined by family members. Many thanks to Yolanda, Charlie, and Cathy for another great spread which, as you can see from the photos, is well and above the normal fare for a Saturday breakfast.... Tomorrow morning sees our final race of the 2020 year with Gina and Kristeen once again lining up in the PDCC criterium series down on the Smeaton Drive course in Rockingham, and once that's done and dusted we'll do a recap of the year's results for the Team. In the meantime here are some pictures from today...

13.01.2022 Well at least someone won something from the afternoon of racing down at Doghill on Saturday - well done Kristeen...

12.01.2022 **** UPDATE FROM STATE CHAMPS **** It seems that the driver of the ute was not pulling out from an un-marshalled intersection but a driveway... we apologise for the incorrect description of that in the original write-up but it does not change the fact that the sprint area which was promised to be closed for all sprints was not adequately supervised. Having groups of other cyclists standing around on the road may have confused the driver but it is difficult to believe that he would not have seen the race coming towards him if he had just looked to make sure the road was clear before pulling out as he is required to do under law.

11.01.2022 Back on the front again

10.01.2022 Kelly out on course in yesterday's race

10.01.2022 This afternoon Col, Kelly and Mike, supported by Gina and Kristeen, travelled down to Nth Dandalup to take part in the PDCC Nth Dandalup handicap race. This is a 49km race over lumpy terrain characterised by a 6km climb straight off the start-line. Kelly was first of our guys off the start line, leading his start group away and setting the pace. Kelly rode extremely well today with a personal best time over the complete course and, probably more satisfying for Kelly, perso...nal best times on all the climbs on the course. Col and Mike were next off the start line, some 14 minutes behind Kelly's group and both made it into the front group of their start group which was quickly whittled down to 6 riders not far from the start. At the top of the main climb they were still together both recording personal best times over that climb, however Mike abandoned the race at that stage and turned back. Col carried on riding very strongly and finished 18th overall with a personal best time being recorded for the entire course. So a big well done to Kelly and Col for their efforts today. Next outing for the Team is a gravel TT for Col next weekend and then the following weekend is another PDCC road race down on the Dog Hill circuit when hopefully we will get a large contingent of the guys to race. Thanks to Gina for bringing along refreshments. Once again JAM was one of the last to leave, enjoying a relaxing drink, food and muffins provided by Kelly.

10.01.2022 Kelly on the start line for yesterday's State road champs

09.01.2022 And so ends the 2020 year - a year that promised a lot in January, went rapidly downhill shortly after for obvious reasons, and finished with some hope for a different outlook in 2021. It seems pretty naff to write about cycling and the so-called ‘trials’ we all went through in 2020 in merely not being able to compete in a sport when so many people around the world suffered much more, from forced total lock-downs (which truth be told never really affected anyone in our part o...f Western Australia), to those who lost their health, or lost loved ones, or even their own lives to the virus. That being said, even with the cancellation of many events, we actually did manage to compete in a few races throughout the year, and so here are some of 2020’s statistics for the Team: 11 riders raced in 44 races; with 53 top 10 finishes; and 28 category podium finishes; managing 10 category wins. Our stand-out rider this year is our youngest, Kristeen (for much of the year 10 yrs old, now 11yrs), who in her first year of racing managed to score a 2nd place in the Girls U13 State Criterium Champs, and a 3rd place in the Girls U13 State Road Race Champs. Our big event for the year was once again the Tour of Margaret River in November, with 2 teams entered. This year, however, one of the teams was entirely made up with ‘social’ riders from our Cycling Team (with Brian hopping across as a late replacement for Francois who broke his collar bone about 5 weeks prior). For many of the Cycling Team this was a first taste of real road racing and by all accounts it was an enjoyable (while testing) experience for all involved. Following the Tour of Margaret River in November we also sadly said good-bye to a few of our Racing team-mates with Jean and Aaron moving on to start their own team under the banner of Raptor Racing, sponsored through their business RaptorTech. This saw some other team-mates move across with them. We all sincerely wish Jean and Aaron and their new team the best of luck. Hopefully we will line up ready to do battle on a start line somewhere and some time in 2021. So now we look forward to the new year, with our first events in January with criterium racing and time-trials before the first real road event being the Kalamunda 100km in late February, followed by the 200km 5 Dams a week later. In the meantime the JAM Racing and Cycling Teams hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and we wish you all a happy New Year - eat heaps, drink in moderation, enjoy the break and stay safe and healthy where-ever you are

07.01.2022 Well - where do we start? State Road Champs today and we probably should have a State Championship in the team or at least a podium place to celebrate but let’s not get ahead of the story Anyway - back to the start of the day Col, Kelly, Mike and Gina travelled across to York this morning for the State Elite and Age-group road race champs on a picturesque course through the canola fields. 06.01.2022 Brian on final stage into Nannup

05.01.2022 This morning saw a couple of our riders attending the first PDCC criterium post-road race season, down on the Smeaton Drive course at Rockingham. First of all was the skills course run by the club for new (and some not-so-new riders) concentrating on correct cornering technique. Kristeen and her Nana Gina along with younger brother Joseph enjoyed zipping around the cones in the carpark before heading out onto the criterium course to try out the techniques. After that Kristee...n and Gina raced in the E-grade with Nana showing young Kristeen a clean pair of heels over the 25 minutes plus 2 lap race. Then Joseph had a crack at the Little Critters event. In the meantime team-mate Kelly was in charge of the registration desk doing his bit to volunteer for some Club work while his shoulder and arm injury, aggravated in last weekend's Tour of Margaret River event, had a rest. Here are some photos from today...
