14.01.2022 For most of my life I have had anxiety to some degree, which at its worst was somewhat crippling and governed the way I lived my life. Below are 5 strategies... which I have found beneficial to gain control of my anxiety. Step away from the source. Particularly in the workplace, I found moving away from the situation imperative. It allowed me to settle my thoughts, regain my breathing and clear my mind so I could create a pathway to a calm and rational outcome. Talk to someone. A lot of my anxiety stemmed from overthinking or catastrophising things. Talking through the circumstances to someone who is rational and outside of the situation provided a logical and plausible perspective. Breathing. There are so many breathing techniques available these days, all of which are highly beneficial for managing anxiety and moving you away from the shallow and panicked breath. Acknowledge what is around you. A bit like breathing, there are a number of techniques which help take you out of your manic mind and focus on something else. One method that I used to follow is taking time to stop and acknowledge 3 things I could see, 3 sounds I could hear and 3 things I could smell. Exercise. Personally, this is the most essential for me. Exercise that is interactive, requires a level of focus and where I’m surrounded by positive and uplifting people is a great way to escape my busy mind.
