14.01.2022 Having just returned from holiday in Noosa and Coffs Harbour, we are reminded of how lives can change in a split 2nd. Tragic events caused through catastrophic conditions as the fires raced across Queensland NSW, Western Australia and South Australia. People were on alert and required to have evacuation plans. It made me think about our lives and how precious our time on earth is. Having a plan is so important. ... That brought me to thinking about my career choice as an End of Life Doula. Doula is a Greek word meaning ‘woman/person of service’. Looking after, caring for and sometimes even knowing someone who is dying can be confronting, confusing and challenging for all involved There is often so much to consider, many things to manage, choices to make and it can be very challenging to manage all of this. Knowing all your options will make a significant difference. So I urge you to draw up a plan for peace of mind for yourself and your loved ones. So what can a Doula offer? A Doula assists you in knowing what is required and completing your legal documents so you can have your choices known and wishes followed. Depending on which Australian state you reside in, there are different legal and statutory requirements for ‘paperwork’ and legal documents empowering who you choose to support you. Provides you information about many end of life choices you have both for living and for after death. Supports in your right to choose an end-of-life that is meaningful to you and consistent with your belief system and values (ethnic, cultural, religious/spiritual or personal). Assists you put into place all your plans for the future as you wish Advocates for and guides all involved through the medical/hospital/nursing world ensuring that you know all you need to. Can be your liaison, your ‘interpreter’ with your medical and other support teams. Accesses the support services and other resources you may need or prefer. Provides emotional support to all involved, before, during and after death. Coordinates services and all aspects of care provision as needs change. Assists in the maintenance of an intimate, spiritual and peaceful ‘space’ and experience for everyone involved whether medical support is required or not and whether in the home, hospice or residential facility. 09.01.2022 I AM GRATEFUL FOR EACH NEW DAY AND I HAVE PLANNED AHEAD. PLAN FOR YOUR FAMILY.... GIVE THEM PEACE OF MIND BY PLANNING AHEAD Do you have a will? Why it’s important Without a valid Will, no-one knows who you wanted to inherit your assets and sentimental items and when this occurs it is called dying intestate. ... Your assets will be distributed according to a formula set out in the Succession Act 2006 which may not be in keeping with your wishes. This law defines which family members are entitled to your assets and what portion of your estate they are entitled to receive. If you die without a valid Will the law does not provide for gifts to friends or charities, or any religious or cultural arrangements you may want to make. There is no allowance for pets, who can also be important members of your family. If you are in a defacto relationship and die without a Will, your partner would need to supply sworn evidence that the relationship existed. This can be expensive and distressing during a time of grief. It is much easier to have a Will, naming your partner as a beneficiary, if that is your wish. Do-it-yourself Wills It is not recommended that you prepare your own Will. If a Will contains unclear wording (common in homemade Wills), or does not conform to strict legal requirements, the Supreme Court may need to determine what it means, or whether or not it can be accepted as a valid Will. This can result in large legal costs, delays and there is a risk your wishes may not be carried out. It is better to have your Will professionally prepared by someone that knows the legal requirements and can ensure your wishes are properly recorded. This gives you the opportunity for good estate planning. There are tax considerations that an estate specialist can discuss with you. More complex family arrangements may also need to be carefully planned for in a Will. Have you considered your digital assets? It’s easy to overlook things when you’re preparing a Will. One example you may not have considered is your digital assets. For example, if your executor is unaware of website subscription fees, or bills that you pay automatically online, your estate may be paying for things unnecessarily after you are gone. It’s important to document all of your digital assets, regardless of value. Not doing so could cost your estate money. Some of the most common digital assets you may need to think about for you executor to action include: Emails, blogs and social media accounts, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn Domain names and web servers Photo/video storage. e.g. YouTube Online banking and other financial products Reward programs, e.g. Flybuys Online retail and payment systems, e.g. eBay, PayPal, Amazon, iTunes Computer hard drives and passwords See more
