25.01.2022 Hi all! I hope that you have been having fun building your child's communication skills. Over the last few months I have been working hard to build my business. I would love to hear from you. What would you like to see on my professional Facebook page? Some ideas include: 1. Developing early communication skills;... 2. Developing early understanding (receptive) language skills; 3. Developing speech (sound) production skills; 4. Fluency (stuttering); 5. Books! Books! Books! As I say to the gorgeous children that I work with- 'ready, set... go'! I will look forward to being guided by your areas of interest. Watch this space for research based, highly informative posts over the next few months and for now... here's a fabulous one on the importance of reading books- 15 minutes per day/ every day. until your child won't let you read to them any longer......
24.01.2022 Bubble blowing is my favourite tool to engage children in any Speech Pathology intervention. The pure delight that little kids get from popping bubbles never ceases to amaze me. For little kids who are still learning to communicate, I love to embed bubble blowing routines in a choice making activity to promote new words. For example: Would you like 'bubbles' or another (less desirable) object. Any attempts at communication is reinforced with the bubble blowing and the opportunity to model other 'functional' vocabulary. This may include: 'up', 'down', 'big', 'little', 'uh oh', 'gone', 'pop', 'finished' and 'more'. I also love to promote repetitive phrases such as 'ready', 'set'......... 'GO'. Happy talking!

21.01.2022 Happy Tuesday! A love all the information and resources found on the Hanen program website (www.hanen.org). This is particular relevant for those of you with Pr...eschool aged children...... The five building blocks of literacy Based on the most current research in early literacy development, the most effective ways to nurture your child’s early literacy development is through everyday routines and activities: Conversation A child’s ability to use and understand speech is directly related to her literacy development. The better her conversational skills now, the easier it will be for her to understand what she reads later on. Vocabulary The more words a child knows, the easier it is for her to learn new words and to gain meaning from the stories she reads. Story comprehension Experience listening to and understanding stories will eventually make it easier for a child to read and write stories on her own. Print knowledge Before a child can read and write, she must understand how print works. For example, she’ll need to know that print is made up of letters of the alphabet, that letters combine to make words and that print is read from left to right. Sound awareness To be prepared to read, children must understand that words can be broken down into syllables and smaller sounds, and that letters correspond to certain sounds.

16.01.2022 2017! The new year is here and already, you may be noticing your child achieving new developmental milestones. Walking? Joining words together? Kicking the ball? If you have concerns that your child may not be achieving their 'communication' milestones when you'd expect, Speech Pathologists (University trained professionals) can provide assessment and advice/ goals and intervention to support your child with these skills (speech/ language/ stuttering). I am conveniently located on the beautiful Tweed Coast at Casuarina Health and Medical Centre. If you would like to make a booking or have any further questions, please don't hesitate to email me: [email protected]

14.01.2022 This is a great article and one that resonates with my own personal and professional beliefs regarding technology and little kids......
13.01.2022 Choice making is a simple and effective way to help build a little kids vocabulary. By giving choices with real objects, you are teaching children to attach meaning to the objects with the goal that will eventually begin to say the word for these objects. Simple ways that you can embed choice making in your day may include: 1. Getting dressed: Will we put on your 'sock' or your 'shorts' first? 2. Snack time: Would you like some 'apple' or a 'bickie'? 3. Play time: Will we pla...y with the 'ball' or the 'bubbles'? Try and hold the items in front of your child so that they can make a clear choice. If your child looks to one object and/ or makes a vocalisation, add a name for the item e.g. 'oh you want the ball'. Praise any vocalisation by saying 'great talking'. Children love positive affirmation and the more encouragement they get when learning new skills, the more likely they will be to try again. Happy talking with your child on this rainy day!
