19.01.2022 My Jane Story: Alumnus Robbie Arnott Robbie Arnott is an Award-Winning Tasmanian Author. You may have come across his work, the novels ‘Flames’ (which is to be ...developed into a six-part television series) and ‘The Rain Heron’ (released in June). Most recently, Robbie has won the Hedberg Writer in Residence award, allowing him to immerse himself in work on his third novel. As Writer in Residence, Robbie will be giving back to the broader Tasmanian creative community through a series of workshops, masterclasses and public talks. Born in Launceston, he now resides in Hobart after spending a few years in Melbourne. A past resident himself, alumnus Robbie reflects on his time at Jane Franklin Hall below. What did you appreciate most about your Jane experience? Definitely meeting so many great people, many of whom I'm still friends with today. I was lucky enough to attend Jane Franklin with current Fellow Mr Daniel Aitken. What a man. What impact did your Jane experience have on the direction of your life? Living at Jane allowed me to broaden my experiences, and interact with interesting people I ordinarily might have never met. This is probably the most direct effect life at Jane had on me the opportunity to see things from different points of view, and to adjust the frame with which I viewed the world. A big thank you to Robbie for taking the time to share your experiences with us, and wishing you all the best on your next exciting adventure!

19.01.2022 In these troubled times all is right in our Jane world right now.

Born in Brisbane, he... grew up in several places around the world including Brisbane, Australia; Oxford, England; and Lubbock, Texas, where he finished high school. Below, he reflects on his time here at Jane Franklin Hall. What did you appreciate most about your Jane experience? I loved the friendships I formed at Jane, who I am still in touch with today. Jane played an integral role in developing my academic interests in Mathematics and Engineering. I loved my time, and am still in touch with, Prof. Larry Forbes and Prof. Damien Holloway. What impact did your Jane experience have on the direction of your life? Jane helped solidify a lifelong love of learning and Mathematics for me. It was vital in helping me do a DPhil in Mathematics at Oxford, where I met my wife and fulfilled a personal dream of doing a PhD. Jane opened so many doors for me. We’d like to say a massive thank you to Nicholas for taking the time to share his Jane experience with us. We wish him all the best, all the way from Tasmania!

03.01.2022 My Jane Story: Alumnus Jordan Perry Born in Devonport, Alumnus Jordan Perry grew up on an acreage outside of Latrobe, Tasmania. Since his time at Jane, Jordan h...as worked in policy development, consulting and accounting roles across the public and private sectors. In 2013, he moved to Canberra to take up a graduate position with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and has since worked for Deloitte, the Department of Treasury, and PwC where he now works in corporate regulation. After spending six winters in Canberra, he now lives in Sydney with his wife Sarah. Having asked Jordan to look back on his time at Jane, he reflects on the standouts of his experience below. What did you appreciate most about your Jane experience? Firstly, I was fortunate to have a cohort I connected with. I remain very close to many of the people in this group. The way we have supported each other over the years since Jane, particularly during 2020 with its many and varied challenges, has underscored how strong bonds formed at Jane really are. Secondly, Jane helped me grow up. I was exposed to people with different backgrounds, life experiences and views in an environment where that was celebrated. As a result, I left Jane a more open-minded and better-rounded person. What impact did your Jane experience have on the direction of your life? My two years in college instilled in me the importance of relationships, a focus on the common good and a much stronger sense of civic duty. It helped me realise that we are ultimately just people and that our lives are defined by our relationships and the way we treat one another. This has influenced my career and personal choices to this day. we are ultimately just people andour lives are defined by our relationships and the way we treat one another. What wonderful words of wisdom Jordan! We would like to say a heartfelt thank you for taking the time to share your story with the Jane community and we wish you all the best!

03.01.2022 My Jane Story: Alumnus Philippa Dawson Born and bred in Tasmania, Philippa has recently returned to Launceston after spending 24 years away chasing new challeng...es abroad. During these years, she took on several roles in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade including Second Secretary in the Australian Embassy in Washington at the time of 9/11, Event Manager for the APEC 2007 Taskforce, Head of the Security Taskforce and Domestic Property, Specialist Communications Adviser with the UN Interregional Criminal and Justice Research Institute, Head of the International Issues Branch of Austrade in Toronto, Chief Operating Officer of Australian Trade and Investment Commission the list goes on! Glad to be back on Tasmanian soil, she now works as a Management Consultant, using her worldly knowledge and experience to help businesses and individuals grow to exceed their potential. A past resident herself, alumnus Philippa reflects on her time at Jane Franklin Hall. What did you appreciate most about your Jane experience? I enjoyed just everything about my Jane experience and it was just that a real experience and not just a great place to live while studying. If I had to pick the one thing I appreciated most it was the opportunity to meet and live with people from different walks of life, other parts of Tasmania, Australia and from overseas. In particular, to really get to know and make friends with people studying very different courses to me without the Jane experience, I don’t think I would have met so many people from across the different university faculties. What impact did your Jane experience have on the direction of your life? Two things really jump out at me: Leadership the opportunity to take on leadership within the Student Club I believe gave me the confidence and experience to be a leader in my work life. Empathy - living in close quarters with people who you may not ordinarily get to know/be friends with I believe taught me greater empathy and emotional intelligence. What a life to have lived! We’d like to thank Philippa for sharing her story with us and wish her all the best in her future endeavours!
