22.01.2022 My Jane Story: Alumnus Philippa Dawson Born and bred in Tasmania, Philippa has recently returned to Launceston after spending 24 years away chasing new challenges abroad. During these years, she took on several roles in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade including Second Secretary in the Australian Embassy in Washington at the time of 9/11, Event Manager for the APEC 2007 Taskforce, Head of the Security Taskforce and Domestic Property, Specialist Communications Advi...ser with the UN Interregional Criminal and Justice Research Institute, Head of the International Issues Branch of Austrade in Toronto, Chief Operating Officer of Australian Trade and Investment Commission the list goes on! Glad to be back on Tasmanian soil, she now works as a Management Consultant, using her worldly knowledge and experience to help businesses and individuals grow to exceed their potential. A past resident herself, alumnus Philippa reflects on her time at Jane Franklin Hall. What did you appreciate most about your Jane experience? I enjoyed just everything about my Jane experience and it was just that a real experience and not just a great place to live while studying. If I had to pick the one thing I appreciated most it was the opportunity to meet and live with people from different walks of life, other parts of Tasmania, Australia and from overseas. In particular, to really get to know and make friends with people studying very different courses to me without the Jane experience, I don’t think I would have met so many people from across the different university faculties. What impact did your Jane experience have on the direction of your life? Two things really jump out at me: Leadership the opportunity to take on leadership within the Student Club I believe gave me the confidence and experience to be a leader in my work life. Empathy - living in close quarters with people who you may not ordinarily get to know/be friends with I believe taught me greater empathy and emotional intelligence. What a life to have lived! We’d like to thank Philippa for sharing her story with us and wish her all the best in her future endeavours!

22.01.2022 A Tasmanian born and bred, Alumnus Bronwyn Smithies grew up in Sheffield, near the North-West Coast of Tasmania. After completing her Honours while living at Jane, she moved to Adelaide to work for CSIRO, where she conducted Wine Innovation Research (cheers to that!). Moving across Australia to follow her career, Bronwyn then relocated to Brisbane to complete a PhD in plant biotechnology. Her research involved developing plants as ‘biofactories’ for modern medicines so that ...we might be able to grow medicine instead of making it in laboratories what she calls a fun mix of traditional medicine and modern genetic engineering! Still living in Brisbane, Bronwyn now helps researchers from all disciplines to improve the presentation of their work in her role as an academic editor. She also visits classrooms across Queensland to promote a STEM culture, inspiring the next generation of thinkers and innovators to follow a STEM path. In her work, Bronwyn’s goal is to ensure research is presented effectively and is accessible to a wide audience because access to accurate information is so important in today’s world! Below, Bronwyn reflects on her time at Jane and how it shaped who she is today! What did you appreciate most about your Jane experience? My time at Jane was a lot of fun. One thing I really appreciated was the chance to build friendships with people from other backgrounds who were studying different disciplines. This meant a lot of debates around the dining table, sometimes political, sometimes heated, but always in good spirits. What impact did your Jane experience have on the direction of your life? My experience at Jane helped shaped the direction of my life after undergrad, particularly through the friendships I made there. The friends I made at Jane went on to become my housemates and some of my closest friends, and we have been able to support each other through stressful postgrad degrees and life in general! A huge thank you from all of us here at Jane to you Bronwyn for sharing your life journey with us. What a wonderful insight into the varieties of life in the world of STEM! Wishing you the very best in your future scientific and educational endeavours!

20.01.2022 My Jane Story: Student Series Jaiden The Student Club Publications Representative for 2021, Jaiden has already had a busy start to the year at Jane. Studying a Bachelor of Science, Jaiden’s role involves capturing life at Jane through the eyes of the students, sharing memorable moments from throughout the year, and promoting Student Club events through channels like social media and magazine publications. ... H I chose Jane because I loved the idea of living with lots of like-minded university students and having my meals cooked for me. I completely underestimated the impact this would have on my university experience. I have benefited from being close with people in the same units as me, but more importantly, I’ve had lots of support living in an environment where we all go through the struggles of university. I can confidently say that I would never achieve higher marks living anywhere else thanks to the amazing networks at Jane. Below, he talks about what life at Jane has meant for both himself and his university experience. I chose Jane because I loved the idea of living with lots of like-minded university students and having my meals cooked for me. I completely underestimated the impact this would have on my university experience. I have benefited from being close with people in the same units as me, but more importantly I’ve had lots of support living in an environment where we all go through the struggles of university. I can confidently say that I would never achieve higher marks living anywhere else thanks to the amazing networks at Jane. The Jane community was incredibly welcoming from the first moment I arrived. I have found that playing sports and socialising at events has provided me with genuine friendships that I treasure daily. Living at Jane made moving out of home feel less stressful I now treat Jane as my second home. I certainly feel like I belong at Jane; I believe everyone here fits in. Even when times were tough, particularly in 2020, I still felt safe, supported and appreciated here at Jane. Choosing to live here has been the best decision I have made, and if you are considering it, I can not recommend Jane enough! A big thank you to Jaiden for sharing your Jane experience with us, and for continuing to give both students and the wider community an insight into what makes life at Jane so special through your role as Publications Representative. Wishing you all the best with your studies heading into 2021!

19.01.2022 Last week, our students presented The Jane Play at the Peacock Theatre, Salamanca Arts Centre, this year titled ‘A Friendly Felony’. Written by a former Jane student, and directed and performed by a fantastic cast of current Jane students, both nights were a resounding success! With themes of friendship amongst university students resonating strongly with the crowd, it was a relatable, humorous and captivating story, resulting in what some would go on to say is the best Ja...ne play I have seen! Congratulations to all involved!

Nowhere have I seen this more so than at Jane. In the last 6 months, I have seen and felt kindness, care, peace, resilience, humour and an attitude of just getting on with it with no fuss, no whinging and lots of goodwill." - our Principal, Joanna Rosewell

You may have come across his work, the novels ‘Flames’ (which is to be developed into a six-part television series) and ‘The Rain Heron’ (released in June). Most recently, Robbie has won the Hedberg Writer in Residence award, allowing him to immerse himself in work on his third novel. As Writer in Residence, Robbie will be giving back to the broader Tasmanian creative community through a ...series of workshops, masterclasses and public talks. What did you appreciate most about your Jane experience? Definitely meeting so many great people, many of whom I'm still friends with today. I was lucky enough to attend Jane Franklin with current Fellow Mr Daniel Aitken. What a man. What impact did your Jane experience have on the direction of your life? Living at Jane allowed me to broaden my experiences, and interact with interesting people I ordinarily might have never met. This is probably the most direct effect life at Jane had on me the opportunity to see things from different points of view, and to adjust the frame with which I viewed the world. A big thank you to Robbie for taking the time to share your experiences with us, and wishing you all the best on your next exciting adventure!

04.01.2022 My Jane Story: Alumnus Jordan Perry Born in Devonport, Alumnus Jordan Perry grew up on an acreage outside of Latrobe, Tasmania. Since his time at Jane, Jordan has worked in policy development, consulting and accounting roles across the public and private sectors. In 2013, he moved to Canberra to take up a graduate position with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and has since worked for Deloitte, the Department of Treasury, and PwC where he now works in corporate r...egulation. After spending six winters in Canberra, he now lives in Sydney with his wife Sarah. Having asked Jordan to look back on his time at Jane, he reflects on the standouts of his experience below. What did you appreciate most about your Jane experience? Firstly, I was fortunate to have a cohort I connected with. I remain very close to many of the people in this group. The way we have supported each other over the years since Jane, particularly during 2020 with its many and varied challenges, has underscored how strong bonds formed at Jane really are. Secondly, Jane helped me grow up. I was exposed to people with different backgrounds, life experiences and views in an environment where that was celebrated. As a result, I left Jane a more open-minded and better-rounded person. What impact did your Jane experience have on the direction of your life? My two years in college instilled in me the importance of relationships, a focus on the common good and a much stronger sense of civic duty. It helped me realise that we are ultimately just people and that our lives are defined by our relationships and the way we treat one another. This has influenced my career and personal choices to this day. we are ultimately just people andour lives are defined by our relationships and the way we treat one another. What wonderful words of wisdom Jordan! We would like to say a heartfelt thank you for taking the time to share your story with the Jane community and we wish you all the best!

01.01.2022 My Jane Story: Student Series Eve Studying a Bachelor of Science, Eve is another one of our students who has taken on the responsibility of a leadership role as one of the Senior Residents at Jane for 2021. ... Employed by the College for their leadership skills, Senior Residents are live-in members of staff. Acting as peer leaders within the Jane community, they provide after-hours assistance and support to students on campus. Reflecting on the impact that Jane has had on both her personal life and her university experience over the years, Eve talks to us about why she feels she belongs at Jane. I chose Jane because it was where my boyfriend (now husband) lived. I needed a place to stay and he’d always spoken so positively about his experience at Jane. The college catered for my dietary needs and supported my academic work in a far better way than the share house situation I was in previously. The environment was welcoming and alleviated a lot of the stress I’d been experiencing in my previous situation. My fondest memories of Jane are times at Intercambio, a weekly discussion group that considers a variety of topics over delicious snacks and plenty of laughs. The conversations are intriguing, respectful and [it is] a place where everyone can learn from each other. The Jane community is greatly varied, fostering an excellent environment to meet both new and like-minded people. The residents are friendly and there are so many extra-curricular activities to keep the atmosphere fun and exciting. Shared mealtimes makes Jane feel like a home away from home, something that was particularly valuable during the 2020 lockdown. Thank you to Eve for sharing an insight into life at Jane. We wish you all the best with your studies and Senior Resident role heading into 2021!

01.01.2022 Very proud of Senior Resident Eve Gowen for driving this initiative at Jane. Thank you, Eve, for helping us focus on practical ways to help our environment.

01.01.2022 Yesterday, we had a visit from some floofy friends to celebrate the start of exams. Only two words are needed to describe it: pure happiness! Thank you to all of the owners who shared their fluffy bundles of joy with us yesterday
