21.01.2022 Today Remembering 24th June 42yrs ago the first Mardi Gras was held in Sydney. What started as a peaceful March along Oxford Street ended with police brutality, arrests and public naming and shaming of many lesbians and gay men when the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper published the names and occupations of those arrested. ... This vengeance meant innocent people lost their jobs and some who were traumatized by the disgrace, took their own lives. Before 1978 our LGBTQI+ loved ones had been forced to live in the shadows But the small group who walked that night, started a revolution of awareness for major civil rights and established the parade as an annual event. Today, Mardi Gras is a joyous celebration acknowledging that we all deserve to live in the light. We can accept difference, finding the love, dignity and beauty in all people. Representatives from the police force now proudly march alongside many diverse groups from our community. We recognize and celebrate those who have previously fought for rainbow equality and we remain optimistic that the lives of LGBTQI+ around the world will continue to improve. Happy Mardi Gras Day!

20.01.2022 Our PFLAG Brisbane committee Jane Hopkins PFLAG Mum, Sandra, Toni, Beth, Margie and PFLAG National Spokesperson Shelley Argent are wearing purple today proudly ...supporting Wear it Purple Day Wear it Purple has a simple message: . 16.01.2022 Come along It’ll be fun !

14.01.2022 Words cannot adequately describe the roller coaster of bitter/sweet emotions I experienced last night at my first Mardi Gras. Above all the overwhelming feeling was one of euphoria. As we marched alongside other PFLAG parents and friends from around Australia we were cheered, encouraged and thanked by the crowds of thousands as we made our way along the iconic Oxford Street. Our present day reality is grave concern for how we will have to deal with the heartache and destruct...ive bigotry that the impending Religious Discrimination Bill will inflict on our LGBTQi+ loved ones. But last night was a time for joyous celebration of diversity inclusion acceptance and all that is good. Love was in ABUNDANCE in the air. Every sight and every sound!!! I could not have been more proud of boys last night but especially my darling Angel Happy Mardi Gras Will I love you so much.

14.01.2022 Had the pleasure of meeting with the Honourable Michael Kirby to discuss concerns we have with the proposed Religious Discrimination Bill and how it will impact the LGBTQi+ community.

13.01.2022 The recent settlement between Rugby Australia and Israel Folau are a scary and unfortunate result for Australian minorities and their basic human rights. In a recent video with his wife, Folau thanks the general public for supporting them and the Australian Christian Lobby Group for fundraising to pay his legal costs. This is also only days after he linked Australia’s disastrous bushfires to the legalisation of same-sex marriage and abortion claiming it is a little taste of... God’s judgment. He is now calling for the Government to speed up the introduction of the Religious Discrimination Act. Like all other discrimination laws, the bill prohibits indirect discrimination. PFLAG acknowledges that it is wrong to discriminate against someone for the reason that they are of a certain faith or, indeed, of no faith. However, this bill provides that a religious statement of belief made in good faith will not constitute discrimination. For example, an individual could lawfully make a statement that humiliates, intimidates or ridicules people of a certain gender, sexuality or race, as long as they can establish there is some religious basis for the statement. The end result: our discrimination laws will end up privileging people of faith above all others. This Bill appears to go much further than any other discrimination law we have seen and weakens protections for LGBTIQ+ people, women, people with disabilities and those from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. While the consultation process for the Bill is democratically necessary, our loved ones are subjected to continual mental anguish, fear and uncertainty as politicians argue over their basic human rights. While Israel Folau is able to linger on news headlines and manifest his beliefs into media rhetoric, the people he believes will burn in hell are left feeling more isolated and hurt, yet again. There are no underlying messages of love in any of his proclamations. PFLAG is determined to ensure this Bill is not enacted in its current form. We simply ask that those with religious freedom concerns be realistic. At a time when religious liberty is increasingly being used as a pretext to licence discrimination and glorified ‘hate speech’, we firmly believe the Australian Government’s focus should be more forcefully promoting an inclusive vision of religious liberty that ALL can enjoy. For anyone unaware, PFLAG is an organisation based in Brisbane that provides support to Parents and Friends of LGBTQI+ loved ones. If you, or anyone you know would like support, please feel free to message me on this page. https://www.mamamia.com.au/israel-folau-fund/

11.01.2022 What a wonderful day we had ! Despite the heat and Covid 19 Restrictions we celebrated Pride Fair Day with heartfelt gratitude for our Rainbow Loved ones. Thanks to all of our helpers. It was great to gather again at a public event and make new friends!

10.01.2022 Today was a special day!! I was privileged to be invited to represent PFLAG at ACU’s Market Day. Being offered the opportunity to spend the day with such vibrant young people on the campus of a Catholic University was extremely encouraging. Their enthusiasm was heartwarming and it’s so exciting to see diversity and inclusivity being welcomed. ... Thank you to Isabelle and Abo for inviting me, you guys are the best!

09.01.2022 It’s hard to believe that this damaging literature could be presented as part of the curriculum for Year ten boys at a Private School in Brisbane. According to the principal, the book is used in Religious Education Class to Springboard discussion. But in actual fact, the book reinforces messages that lead to victim blaming of sexual assault survivors. Girls are admonished for wearing revealing clothing, sending the message that girls are the gatekeepers to purity. Excus...ing boys from being held responsible for acts of coercion or sexual violence. The book quotes: Sex will be a ‘heat of the moment’ action which if you’re not in a committed relationship, you will regret. And if you try to stop your partner is likely to get just as frustrated and even angry. This is dangerous territory. The book teaches that Sex and Gender Diverse people exist due to the sins of the world and gives false information about the success of Conversion Therapy for LGBTQi+ students. It speaks of divorce being a sin and is dismissive of domestic violence issues. A Critical Analysis of the book by Deanne Carson in 2015 concluded that this type of sexuality education is not of Industry Standard and could actively worsen health outcomes for students subjected to this curriculum. Carson recommended that schools cease using this curriculum immediately. Now imagine the impressionable adolescent boy sitting in class listening to these ludicrous messages and think of the harm that brings.

08.01.2022 28th May is Domestic Violence Awareness Day Our LGBTQi Community are extremely vulnerable and our Trans and Gender Diverse loved ones are at a much greater risk of suffering abuse or violence. This abuse may involve threats of being outed or a fear of further discrimination that keeps people from speaking up and asking for help. ... But, at PFLAG we will stand by you. We are a safe place to get support for referrals and resources you may need. You don’t have to feel fear or shame. You are not alone. You can be safe. With PFLAG, #Imhereforyou LGBTI Domestic Violence Awareness Day

05.01.2022 Although a sensitive topic, it is vital we bring awareness to the alarmingly high rates of suicide and mental health anguish which exists in our LGBTQI+ community. With the lead up to Christmas our discussion will focus on prevention strategies and how we can best support our loved ones. Tune in !

05.01.2022 Very excited about my new role as PFLAG President for 2020. Bring it on!

04.01.2022 Understandably, the media’s main focus in recent months has primarily been reporting on the Covid-19 Pandemic. As we readjusted our lives to the mass disruptions, like the Government, we shifted our attention away from important political issues. As the Parliamentary agenda returns to normalcy, we are reminded of the extreme concerns we should all have for the proposed Religious Discrimination Legislation and the harm it will inflict on our community. Every marginalised g...Continue reading
